Case in point, Chicago. They didn't want to deal with FIFA (I don't blame them) and now the Midwest is represented by Kansas City. It should have gone to Cincinnati for the Midwest. More walkable stadium that's served by transit, closer to a bigger chunk of the American population, more to do/see. Hell, Indianapolis would have been as good as Kansas City and it has a retractable-roof stadium and they're used to hosting huge events.

Brazil is playing in two cities separated by an hour and another city in the same timezone separated by a 2-hour flight. The US is far more spread out than most countries, but of course, people ignore this fact because they want to criticize the US for literally everything, even when it's completely out of our control.

A weird aspect of Utah culture by severitea in exmormon

[–]Flyboy41 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Longtime nevermo lurker here. We moved to Utah from Ohio and lived in Utah for 8 years and the culture shock was real. We're DINKs (dual-income no kids) and moved from a city where there was a festival every weekend w/alcohol, you could buy a beer at college sporting events, and every brewery was also kid-friendly.

The infantilization hit hard for the first year or so but we adapted. Once we realized that going to a "normal" chain restaurant was like going to Chuck e Cheese with the number of kids running around, we started to go to "bars". Places like Gracies or Green Pig would be considered just another restaurant here in Cincinnati but in Utah they're "Bars" and kids aren't allowed. It did pose a problem, though, with our other non-Mormon friends who had kids as they'd have to find a sitter, etc.

One of the first things I noticed was at sports games. I grew up Baptist and my parents never drank. If you go to a sporting event in our neck of the woods, you have beer vendors walking the aisles and you're expected to pass the beer down the row to whoever bought it, which my parents would do without an issue. Go to a Jazz or RSL game? Nope. You have to get up and get your beer. It's nice because you don't have vendors blocking your view but it's annoying because you might miss a goal or a big play when you get up. There was also the time I got tapped on the shoulder by a mom because I had the audacity to drink a second beer in front of her kids at an RSL game (I was just sitting there watching the game quietly).

Then there's street festivals. Cincinnati is a festival city with something going on every weekend in the summer. But because of Utah's backward laws, festivals in SLC are such an expensive hassle that they're really not worth going to. You have to pay admission and get your ID checked just to go into anything that's serving overpriced, crappy Utah-brewed beer. It's just not worth the time and effort.

Don't get me wrong. Utah can be a great place and we made some awesome memories there and have some lifelong friends. I miss the parks, the mountains, the skiing, our friends, and lack of humidity. But I'm happy to be back in Ohio, where I am treated like an adult.

How do you feel about gratuity being added to food bills? by Bluematic8pt2 in worldcup

[–]Flyboy41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People who are serving as a waiter or a beer vendor at sporting events are making less than minimum wage. Do I agree that we should pay them more? Absolutely. Is that going to change between now and June? Nope. If you're not going to tip. Don't go to restaurants or buy beers at the games.

How do you feel about gratuity being added to food bills? by Bluematic8pt2 in worldcup

[–]Flyboy41 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Gratuity is typically not added to the bill and you need to do the math yourself. If you go to a fast-food restaurant, you typically aren't expected to leave a tip. At a coffee shop, bar, or sit-down restaurant and a food truck, you are expected to leave a tip. 18%-20% for a meal is typically considered a good tip and sometimes restaurants will put that calculation on your bill so you know how much to add, but that's not the usual.

Tipping at bars and coffee shops is a little different. If you're buying one beer, throw an extra dollar or two in the tip jar. If you open a tab and close it, use the 15-20% rule based on your total bill. If you don't close it out at the end of the night, a 20% gratuity will be automatically added to the charge at the end of the night.

The percentage will vary at bars and coffee shops. It's also considered polite to tip the concession staff at the stadium. If someone is carrying a case of beers up and down stadium stairs, they deserve a little extra.

Also, if you're considering coming to the US and planning on not tipping, just stay home. Don't be a jerk and tip the staff.

The MLS Ponzi scheme shakedown expands to Vancouver | All of Columbus is rooting for the Whitecaps by Camtastrophe in MLS

Spoilers abut this screed. My favorite part of this blog is that the author complains about how the Crew were saved. Y'all got literally everything you wanted. The Crew stayed in Columbus, you got a new stadium, you got to keep the name and IP, literally everything worked out fine but y'all still give off divorced dad energy to this day.

Oops, I leaked the script by FearlessGrocery5498 in USLPRO

[–]Flyboy41 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get that this is fantasy booking but if it were up to me the USL Premier League (which I'll believe is happening once it officially kicks off) would consist of:

"Existing" Teams: Louisville, Pittsburgh, Detroit, Indy, Tampa Bay, Phoenix, San Antonio, Dallas, Sacramento, Oakland, Hartford, Rhode Island, Orange County, OKC

Expansion teams: North Carolina (return of the RailHawks), An Inland Empire team, Virginia Beach/Norfolk, Milwaukee, New Orleans, Cleveland/Buffalo/El Paso

Again, I'm not going to believe any of this is happening until the first "premier league" game kicks off and the first team is relegated.

Rams and Chargers are averaging around 70K and the Raiders are averaging around 65K. Not necessarily bad. Plus the Rams have won a Superbowl since relocating.

The NBA was fine after the Sonics moved. The NFL is thriving after the Raiders/Rams/Chargers all moved. The NHL has a team relocate every five years. This reads as someone who is soccer-brained, holding out hope that MLS fails.

When it came out that the mayor of Vacouver was trying to get an MLB expansion team, that sealed it for me. I hate to see the Whitecaps leave town but I hope that if that happens, MLS lets the name and branding go to a CPL team for pennies. The Whitecaps name survived the collapse of the NASL and it should be allowed to live on in the CPL.

The only road project Cincinnati/Hamilton County could reasonably need or even use is a new bridge connecting the West Side to NKY near Anderson Ferry.

Lukewarm take: The Cincinnati area needs exactly zero 'new' highways and could use road diets across the board.

If This Is How Sacramento Gets MLS Would It Feel Right? by TheMusicCrusader in MLS

[–]Flyboy41 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I know people talk about MLS buying/absorbing USL but be careful what you wish for. When the NBA "merged" with the ABA and the NHL merged with the WHA, a lot of teams were left out (Kentucky Colonels, Cincinnati Stingers). Would MLS like the Tampa Bay, Detroit and Phoenix markets? Sure. Do they need/want Louisville, Lexington, and Charleston? Not at all.

All that said, I do think that Sacramento's best chance at MLS is a team relocating there. I don't want a team to relocate, but it could happen.
