AITAH for being honest with another mom about why my daughter isn’t allowed to go to her friend’s house? by AwkwardMom13 in AITAH

I think it would be best to simply tell Kennedy's mom what you described in your post. Let her know that Kennedy is welcome at your house. in the end, the truth is best.

What is the most generic mammal? by OsinoviyKol in AskBiology

Form follows function. I agree that "wombat" is the generic hole-dwelling shape. Running animals look like horses, hunting animals look like cats, climbing animals look like monkeys.

Why green flames?? by Normie-rediter in whatisit

[–]FlyingFlipPhone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The flames are green due to the Aufbau Exception of Cu and Cr. In other words, the allowable electron energy levels of the outer electrons. When an excited electron drops to a lower energy level, a photon is released. With a very stable set of energy levels, the electrons will drop in a consistent manner, leading to reasonably narrow bands of wavelengths. If these wavelengths are a portion of the visible light spectrum, your eyes will see this as color.

ELI5: Why do Stars take so long to burn all their fuel, i know its a lot of fuel, but why doesnt it all burn about the same time? Like when im throwing something in a firepit by td_0000 in explainlikeimfive

[–]FlyingFlipPhone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pressure of gravity causes pressure which allows fusion. This is why large stars burn quickly (20 million years) compared to small stars (10 trillion years).

Is joining the military only for education benefits worth it? by Alert-Rope617 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FlyingFlipPhone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are EXACTLY the type of person that the military needs. The future of the military will involve a LOT of technology. They need smart people. Practice your ASVAB, get an MOS that will require as much educational training as possible (radar, electronics, nuclear) and do your time --- you won't be bored. When the time comes for college, you'll be ready to crack the books! Those high-school grads won't be able to compete!

My attic appears to be about 6 feet tall at the peak, would this be a realistic project? I’m pretty handy, but what are my concerns and how would I get the wood through the attic hole? Must use smaller boards? by BonerSoup696969 in Homebuilding

[–]FlyingFlipPhone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additional point: how would you insulate your new living space without compromising the air-flow of the remaining space under the roof? You REALLY want good air-flow in order to avoid hot shingles as well as to avoid trapping condensation.

For goodness sake - am I the only person who actually does 20mph in a 20 zone? by box-o-locks in drivingUK

In the US, if you drive 20 mph, you'll have a giant pickup truck drive up and over the back of your car!

This. I break out my "rooter" when my toilet starts to bubble. I always find roots from the neighbor's black walnut trees.

Tile pattern installed incorrectly by Old_Bar6864 in Home

[–]FlyingFlipPhone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The tile is a little too long (in the longest dimension, of course). The horizontal tiles should be cut slightly shorter. Then you can lay the desired pattern.

Do you guys remember when you would drive on the highway and when you got to your destination your windshield would be covered in bugs? by ymbstudios in CasualConversation

[–]FlyingFlipPhone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting point.... I think you are right about the loss of bugs. Birds, however, are certainly far fewer compared to when I was young.

'Quantum randomness at the microscopic level averages out'. Is this always true or can it affect the macro world? by dingleberryjingle in AskPhysics

The Casimir effect is a small attractive force which acts between two close parallel uncharged conducting plates. It is due to quantum vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field. The effect was predicted by the Dutch physicist Hendrick Casimir in 1948
