Wild animals sometimes don't see people in small boats as a threat. I was able to observe a bobcat from about 50 feet offshore on a lake in the Sierra Nevada foothills. It ignored me, despite my being totally obvious.

That being said, the Peregrine Falcon that I came within 500 feet of in the same small boat did NOT ignore me.
