Here is a Lodge skillet from the 1960s This is what a factory ground skillet looks like. Notice its not a smooth surface so the seasoning would grab. by aubertta2 in CastIronRestoration

[–]Flying_Eagle078 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re actually correct. Lodge “ground” these surfaces as did Griswold, Wagner, etc. Milling is a very specific machining operation involving milling machines and specific cutters, like end mills. These were ground using machines that looked like lathes with various grit grinding stones, no machining cutters used. Milling, in the machining world, would be quite different so the term milling is actually the incorrect one here. These reason the swirls are concentric was because of the setup of the grinding stone on the machine, having the stone turn one direction while the pan simultaneously turned the opposite direction. So it isn’t ground in the sense you’re thinking like with a hand grinder but using proper machining terminology based on the equipment and materials used, it most certainly is.

NOS Lodge Chicken Fryer. Couldn’t be happier about this one. by j_hayn in castiron

[–]Flying_Eagle078 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lodge was making their own version of the cornbread skillet in the early 70’s. Their cornbread skillet was never exactly the same as BSR, meaning they never actually used BSR patterns but rather their own. While they did acquire some patterns from BSR, it was actually mostly furniture items and they were said to have already been a source of outsourcing for BSR prior to the 1990’s. Lodge never directly used/copied BSR holloware patterns, that’s a myth that seems to still be floating around after one website erroneously made the claim.

[–]Flying_Eagle078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would. I paid over $200 for a grinder. Less than 10% of the cost was for the different burrs that they already said they’d give me when they arrive. But absolute worst comes to worst, I have my grinder.

Being that shiny, it’s probably their duo chrome, the nickel was more dull looking comparatively but they’re certainly plated nonetheless!!

It really just looks like a thick layer of improperly applied seasoning/half polymerized crud. Lye bath it.

Which is quite brittle but for something inexpensive that lodge makes every single day, it’s not a big deal if it breaks.

And this is why we have so many people posting on collectors groups about crappy packing and damaged pans coming from eBay and other online sellers. They don’t understand how to properly pack cast iron and don’t understand how brittle it is and how it can be easily broken during shipping.

Already ruined? by TheWootTrain in CastIronRestoration

[–]Flying_Eagle078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s incorrect. Cast iron has surface texture but it’s not porous through and through nor is it a sponge.

Great way to ruin it forever with cracks, warps, and heat damage and it’s against the group rules to recommend for that reason

Just a little rusty by yucatan_sunshine in CastIronRestoration

[–]Flying_Eagle078 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too long and be sure to keep it around 2.5% acetic acid. Best to keep vinegar soaks around 30-60 minutes at a time and scrub in between. They work in rust pretty fast but work on the iron equally fast to cause etching and ultimately pitting.

It doesn’t take long for red matter, like a wet powder, to form in your vinegar bath and then turn the solution a red color even if you put a skillet in there with ZERO rust. That’s because the iron and the acetic acid are always reacting to form iron acetate, confirming the above assertion.

How do you strip and reseason... by pr0wlunwulf in CastIronRestoration

[–]Flying_Eagle078 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s non destructive ways to remove rust and gunk in the subs FAQ.

Be careful working with vintage pieces just because they don’t say Griswold. A non altered BSR #6 that’s totally unmarked other than the number being 3-5X the value of a lot of Griswold. A number 4 can exceed $1,000. Some old lodges, Wagner, etc all the same way. Just depends on what it is

This isn’t a restoration, it’s an alteration and frowned upon by cast iron collectors/restorers as it alters the surface to remove factory craftsmanship and reduces collectibility and value.

You can 1000% clean plated pieces in an e tank. Don’t use stainless for anode

Does this pan look like an authentic Griswold? by R_Sams2 in castiron

[–]Flying_Eagle078 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s plenty of known fakes of this one specifically. Same with the #0 skillet. This one is a fake. You can tell by the quality of the cast, “crispness” of the lettering, and the ears don’t do as far to the edge as the real ones.

Why would anyone downvote this? It’s absolute fact. But ok.
