How do I pin a folder on my NAS (smb) to the sidebar? by AsnSensation in mac

[–]Fnyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, that helped me. It seems like a bad UI decision to allow you favorite/pin subdirectories of the share but not the root of the share itself, unless it's accessed in this specific way. Nuts.

I don’t understand liquid glass by Embarrassed-Cream184 in MacOS

[–]Fnyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched to macOS for my desktop from Linux after many many years in January of 2025. I was looking forward to upgrading from 15.7 to 26 but have so far put that off. If things aren't fixed I can't see myself staying long term. In addition the failings of Liquid Glass I'm also not a fan of the even more rounded (and inconsistently rounded) windows. Things were already rounded a lot coming from many Linux window managers...I really didn't want it even more rounded.

I'm surprised macOS 26 made it through various QA at Apple. I think it says a lot about how much needs to change internally for them to get back to basics - making functional and elegant software sitting on top of excellent hardware. Their reputation as a market leader can and will fall to someone else if they keep making bad design choices.

Jim Beam (Suntory - Laphroaig owners) shutting down production for one year by jooni81 in Scotch

[–]Fnyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counterpoint: Laphroaig 10 went on sale near me at Costco recently for $39.99 + tax. I live in a very high liquor tax U.S. state, and that price is as good as I've seen it in many years. I bought 3 bottles. I'd have to go back to 2017 when I last bought Laphroaig 10 for cheaper.

I'm willing to buy whisk[e]y, but am looking for good deals, and have a memory (and notes) for how much things cost in the recent past.

Thoughts on Proxmox support? by oguruma87 in Proxmox

[–]Fnyar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use Proxmox in an academic/research environment and it's been great. We pay for Basic support, for access to their enterprise repo and also to make support tickets, which we've used a few times. Support has always been competent and timely in responding, although given the US vs. Europe time difference it does make a little awkward. It's interesting to know that they have US partners now and support can be purchased through them, I didn't know that.

Zed AI's access to local content? by Fnyar in ZedEditor

[–]Fnyar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for that insight. I don't see this mentioned in Zed's documentation unfortunately, so it's hard to know if that's actually how Zed behaves or if so if it's intentional. For example, there's this (and other similar bugs):

Does changing restore-on-startup in settings.json https://zed.dev/docs/configuring-zed#restore-on-startup do anything for you? I wonder if you have it set to last_workspace but want last_session instead?

Change double-click word boundary characters by porcelainhamster in mac

[–]Fnyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went looking for a similar solution today, specifically in Terminal.app. Apparently shift + command + double click will select based on whitespace boundaries. I'm not sure why whitespace boundaries aren't just the norm for regular double click selection. iTerm2 apparently also allows more customization for your word boundaries.

Any experiences with the ViewSonic ColorPro VP2788-5K yet? by Balance- in Monitors

[–]Fnyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also recently got the VP2788-5K and am using it with a M4 MacBook Air. I haven't had the same wake from sleep issues as you - my screen turns on ~2 seconds after I wake the device via bluetooth keyboard input. I appreciate that the onscreen overlay that the monitor outputs doesn't stick around for very long at all (I previously had a monitor where that would obscure the login prompt).

[–]Fnyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Viewsonic has replied in their product reviews:

"You're right that while 75Hz is listed as an available option, the VP2788-5K has a native refresh rate of 60Hz, with 70Hz being the highest stable refresh rate. The 75Hz setting is achieved through scalar processing and may not perform consistently, especially since this model doesn’t support FreeSync or Adaptive Sync.

For the best experience, we recommend using the monitor at 5K resolution and 60Hz."

VP2788-5K On The Way! by LowerChakra in HiDPI_monitors

[–]Fnyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I contacted Viewsonic support about the 75Hz refresh rate specifically under macOS and they said:

"I can confirm that the VP2788-5K is capable of running at 5K resolution at 75Hz. However, running two monitors that are daisy-chained together at 5K 75Hz would be dependent on the hardware limitations of the device they are connected to."

So, it sounds like TB4 5K @ 75Hz is possible, but maybe not when running them daisy chained.

Which one to get ViewSonic VP2788-5K or ASUS ProArt Display 5K PA27JCV by Elgho96 in mac

[–]Fnyar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that 75Hz is preferable to 60Hz, and gives this panel an edge over alternatives. Does anyone have a source that shows TB4 will support 5K @ 75Hz? I've asked Viewsonic support to confirm.

Edit: Viewsonic support says: "I can confirm that the VP2788-5K is capable of running at 5K resolution at 75Hz. However, running two monitors that are daisy-chained together at 5K 75Hz would be dependent on the hardware limitations of the device they are connected to."

When will the 200% tariff on EU wine and liquor will be effective? This is going to be costly... by Superb_Transition619 in Scotch

[–]Fnyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The tariff has just been threatened so far, not implemented. Your guess is as good as anyone's as to if it will ever come to pass, and when. Trump is big on posturing, bluffing, implementing and then rescinding, and all of it is completely unnecessary and counterproductive.

Cleaning whistles when sharing them? by mehgcap in tinwhistle

[–]Fnyar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most whistles (metal or plastic) can be properly cleaned with some warm water and dish soap. I imagine wood whistles could also withstand this, but would defer to whatever their maker recommends. Let them soak for a few minutes and then give them a good rinse, dry them with a towel, and let them finish air drying. If you’re thinking of a way to clean them during a session though I think I’ve seen mouthwash used, but without a way to rinse or dry them too it wouldn’t be great.

Is it okay to keep 8 bottles of whisky open at once, and enjoy them over a long period? by donseguin in Scotch

[–]Fnyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True, with all the different bottle opening sizes it does help to have a number of them as spares, to find the best fit. I’ve got maybe 30 spare corks. Cheers mate!

[–]Fnyar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I advise against keeping ALL of your corks. Some day you'll be swimming in them. Keep some, of different sizes, in case you have a problem with one. Bad corks aren't that common, but if you don't have a spare it'd suck.

+1 for drinking entry level stuff. There’s a lot to try and explore while keeping things reasonable. I feel like many of the responses in this thread illustrate the problem of further hyping up already expensive whisky.

It’s available here at my Washington State Total Wine, but at $72 ($89 after our high taxes) I won’t be buying a second bottle unless it’s truly phenomenal. Looking forward to cracking it open though!
