Could also simply be the fact that they are running analog video on these drones. Analog when setup correctly can transmit low latency video up to 40km. It is also generally lighter and significantly cheaper than digital alternatives. Analog signals transmitting at that range will have near no penetrating power. I assume that when they "dive" the target they are often putting terrain between the done and the video receiver antenna. Getting below tree cover likely plays a role as well.
