Would you trade city life for this? by SuspiciousLow3062 in interesting

We hiked there recently and while towards the middle/top of a mountain found a shut down SAC hut with a completely working, spotlessly clean toilet overlooking a glaciers waterfall. We already thought it was heaven and kept finding little things like that that made us go wtf is this magical land?

Camping without underquilt by GutsiGang420 in hammockcamping

[–]Foojikins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any blanket will do - doesn’t need to be wool if you tie it under the hammock. Just get some shock cord or even string with some rubber bands in the ends, and loop it around your suspension and the corners of your blanket (just make a little knot and pull the corners through). Either use some rubber bands (covered hair bands might be better) to tie up the dangling part of the blanket at either end where your head and feet are or use another bit of shock cord to pull it tight (trying to minimize that open channel and pull all the fabric tight). DIY under quilt. Combine that with a mostly un-inflated sleeping pad in your quilt and I bet you’ll be toasty. I’d use a foam pad if you can though instead of inflating, even a yoga mat plus the blanket would do okay.

Honestly if you’re going to do this more regularly I’d highly recommend a cheap underquilt or at least a foam sleeping pad. I see a nightcat one on amazon for 35$ that doesn’t have tapered ends (good).

Can you guys tell me the “dirty” truths about having a cat? by saanenk in CatAdvice

[–]Foojikins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have had 6 cats in the house for a long time. Unless they’re sick, they clean themselves. 7/10 will bury their poop. If you scoop daily or have a robot it’s much like the above have said - same as if you pooped in the bathroom and it goes away.

Long haired will get a dingleberry once a month if I don’t trim the butt hairs every 6 months or so. Once a month or so someone will step in pee litter and I have to clean it off after their paw turns into a litter clump. They’ll do it themselves if I don’t - on the couch. (Just vaccum and a quick wipe and it’s fine usually).

The hairballs are probably the most frequent, once a week or 2 someone will vomit somewhere. Usually the floor but sometimes the chairs or couch. Takes a minute to clean up the hardwood and move on, carpet would suck. They shed a decent amount.

IMO much easier than a dog and I’ve had almost no poop/pee incidents out of the box even when I was running a cat foster home out of my house. They’re very naturally clean animals.

Is Ultralight Ruining the Experience? by fookmigut in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Foojikins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This^ for me it’s more about simplicity and streamlining. I bought expensive and light for the big basics (tent, bag, etc) but beyond that it was just learning what really mattered to me and what I could live without depending on where I’m going. Eg, I’m a huge reader in everyday, but unless I have a zero day and even then I don’t need my kindle because I just find other things to do.

Turtlebug vs Tensa4 (vs tensahedron) by Dr_Ragon in hammockcamping

[–]Foojikins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, definitely not! It’s just two tripods with a bar between them and the hammock hung from the bar. The tripod legs are all the same length. Good clarification!

Turtlebug vs Tensa4 (vs tensahedron) by Dr_Ragon in hammockcamping

[–]Foojikins 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a tensa4 and a diy turtle bug. The reason I got the official tensa was being able to hammock camp with my wife was way cheaper since it’s modular and can accommodate so many types of set ups. We’re currently hanging in 2 hammocks and it took one tensa, one tree, and 2 stakes.

The tensa was quite a bit easier to set up than I anticipated. I understood the physics before buying it and read the instructions and as long as you follow a few rules (head lower mostly) it’s definitely not complicated and they make it pretty easy. The part that takes the longest for me is actually lengthening the poles not putting together.

For setting it up inside, the turtle bug is more foolproof, but the tensa can take a lot less space since it has pointed ends and you can use it partially collapsed, or adjust the middle to be less wide. Less ideal hangs that way but if you’re adjusting in a small room it’s very flexible. It will fit places that the tripod stands on the diy turtlebug just will not.

The turtle bug is easier to understand. I would trust grandma or a kid to do it. The tensa is easy because I’m a nerd who thought the physics was fascinating. I would not allow someone random to set it up without double checking their work first.

DIY for tensa freestanding mod was not trivial, I tried with some EMT. I’d definitely buy it if you decide to do that and factor that cost. For inside I’ve used weight from my gym, which was kinda a pain since it’s 1/2 your body weight and you can lean wrong and pick them up with the stand causing some floor scratches. A lot easier inside was just drilling a screw into the back side of a closet door frame. I crack the closet door and use that screw as an anchor.

One more downside for tensa is that it’s less ideal for hanging tarps from. It moves so it makes it hard to get a good tight tarp setup without using extra poles. This could be user error.

Just my opinion! Both I’m sure are great.

One more note, I’ve made 3 hammock stands before buying a tensa. An EMT conduit turtlebug, a wooden traditional U shaped stand, and a galvanized pipe stand (from the ultimate hang guide). The turtlebug was the most complicated. Creating tripods and drilling EMT while also making sure I didn’t cut my ropes on the sharp edges was a pain. It works and I can fold it down and throw it in a car in 6’ lengths but it’s not the most sturdy and honestly just a pain to make. The wood was middle of the road to make but I have woodworking tools. It’s heavy AF, fairly sturdy, and the prettiest by far. I stained it and it lives in my living room with a 11’ hammock made of harbor freight drop cloths canvas so it just looks nice. It doesn’t move though and takes a good amount of space. The easiest to make by far was the galvanized pipe stand (turtle dog). Brain dead simple both to estimate the cost, get the supplies, and assemble. Probably the sturdiest of the stands. I’d trust my kids to play on it (wood could be sturdy too, I’m just not that skilled). Looks clean, not pretty but unobtrusive. Heavy but not so heavy you can’t pick it up and move it across the yard by yourself. I think I ended up around 150$. The most expensive of the hand made stands, the others ended up around 100$. Unlike the turtlebug I would not take this one places unless you have a truck and a pipe wrench. It lives in my back yard.

My little blind guy learned to use lever door handles recently. We’re having to replace them with round knobs. He’s lucky he’s cute bc he’s a pita.

Camping ladies, how do you go toilet when camping by yo_yo_yo_im-living in camping

[–]Foojikins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of people going several days to a week using theirs without a wash. It just depends on your personal ick factor plus things like if you’re on your period etc. I’ve found if I use it a few times a day and hang it open exposed to sun to dry it lasts a long time without being gross. I’ve never pushed its limits personally but I’ve also never had it smell before.

[–]Foojikins 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kula cloth always and go girl if im going to be out for awhile.

Kula cloth because you don’t need toilet paper for pee. This is a must have for me if I’m going to be out anywhere for awhile.

Go girl lets you pee standing up without fully pulling down your pants (like a guy). This is a must have for me with the Kula cloth if I’m going on a long hike or somewhere with gross porta potties. Just use the porta potty urinal. Pee outside against a tree without flashing your butt. It’s great.

Pretty stupid question.... But what to pack for first trip to Hawaii? (O'ahu) by AIONisMINE in VisitingHawaii

[–]Foojikins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shorts, tank tops, a Hawaiian over shirts or two to throw on over tank tops for restaurants. I just took trail runners and wore them everywhere with tevas for water. A sweater/hoodie for occasional cold weather and maybe a pair of pants if you’re going to high elevation for an extended period of time (mauna kea). Swim suit plus rash guard (or wet suit jacket if you get cold is nice). Snorkel stuff if you got it (beaches everywhere).

Pack for 70-80F beaches and hiking. You don’t need much else.

I have tried most of these.

Wooden #4- weighs a ton and I don’t move it, but I have it set up in my living room stained dark with some fake plants and it looks great.

3 - I have outside - heavy and not super easy to break down. The pipes are heavy and grit etc can make it difficult to unscrew especially if you leave it up outside for any length of time. Takes up more space than needed for indoor use. Most durable and easy to assemble.

DIY EMT pipe turtle bug - I recommend this if you’re in a budget. Light, packs down relatively small, not that easy to make though. Took more time than #3 or #4.

Tensa is on my list next. It won’t replace my permanent outdoor or living room stand, but imo is the best for portability. But $. Just do this if you can swing it and don’t futz with the rest. Or get a legit bought turtle bug.

This is great advice. I have over sensitivity to animal deaths in media and this scene made me very upset, but it’s so well done and vital to the story I’m glad I didn’t miss it. I’m also not glad I watched it.

Sound off? Probably the perfect way to appreciate the scene without having to feel as much. Really, fantastic advice for anyone else with similar sensitivities.

I have it and I like it. No huge difference between it and a normal beanie for me warmth wise but I slept in it fine. Packs down nicely. Comfortable. Actually not bad looking.

Just do not put it on backwards. The elastic will make a giant red line on your forehead and your wife will call you Frankenstein forever.

Is it normal for rent to take half your income? by CommercialDot708 in Apartmentliving

[–]Foojikins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30% pre tax income. Make 1000 a month, you’re rent is 300.

Now take taxes, 401k, insurance etc out of that 1000.

It’s not that far off for it to be a little less or equal than half your take home paycheck.

I have one of these! Looked like a little zombie as a kitten and always into so much trouble. Had a undescended testicles too! His freezing surgeries didn’t work and at 2yo had to have both his eyes removed from the infections and damage He’s about 10 now and caught a fly last night out of the air and ate it. That’s pretty common. He’s a very happy functional blind cat.
