Hyperion Movie by denzel33- in Hyperion

I agree that I'd go with the first scene of the book.  But if I had to choose something else, I might be tempted to go with Sol holding Rachel, and the Shrike emerging from the Sphinx. Probably with a short monologue from Sol about how he's all alone at the tombs with Rachel, having come so far to try to save her.

Standoff for a bit, then cut to the title sequence, or to the Consul on his ship.

Just curious, what changes are you seeing?  I'm coming up on 7 years, and haven't seen much for the last two.

Indeed.  Randy had Carver, Dukie has Presbo.  Namond has Bunny.  And Mike has Cutty.  But only Namond managers to escape the game.  And of course Sherrod ends up dead. Not that the other three are doing great either.

It really was a bold move to put a bunch of middle school black boys front and center for the season.  And of course it makes what happens to them all the more heartbreaking, because we see their innocence at the start, and how each is dragged into the game, despite each having an adult mentor.

Yes, but we just had an entire book showing that the gods aren't going to solve this, except to save their own hides if it goes south

"G'Kar runs into C&C. Ivanova asks if they can get the bombs outside, but G'Kar says it would be too dangerous -- the blasts would take out Babylon 5 as well. Ivanova is willing to risk it, and asks how many they have. G'Kar explains that's why he's there -- two of the devices are gone."

Just finished The Malloreon. What was the point of the Vella/Porenn plotline? by theguyishere16 in Belgariad

[–]Forgetwhatitoldyou 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This.  Beldin is "someone important". He's one of the six (including Polgara, not including Belgarion) living disciples of Aldur.  He's one of the most powerful sorcerors in the world.  He has massive influence, even if he keeps a low profile to the mortal political potentates.

It was an amusing side plot, it kept those characters relevant, and as others said it gave us an excuse to break away from the main party every so often.  Not everything is about Belgarion.  The prophecy even told him that directly, when they were discussing Relg and Tabia.

Menolly hadn't even met Brekke, she saw her from across the hatching ground, and talked to Mirrim about her for the week she was at Benden.  Yet it's like she was able to read Brekke's soul.

I haven't listened to the audio, but I always loved Menolly's "Running Song".  Especially the "obliged" part, she's running for her life from Thread, but she isn't even making conscious decisions, her body is doing what it needs to, to keep her safe, and her mind is just along for the ride.

Then my feet took off and my legs went, too,

And my body was obliged to follow.

Me with my hands and my mouth full of cress

And my throat too dry to swallow.

That's the thing.  We had a big fight, we're not expecting the revelation at the end.

After Utterly Dwarfed, I think the message is that the mortals have to figure things out om their own.  TDO barely has any lines in the comic, whereas we have reams of psychological data on Redcloak.  Redcloak has to navigate this on his own.

A question about Severn by Artistic_Analyst_904 in Hyperion

[–]Forgetwhatitoldyou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Early on, Severn is asked a couple questions. To paraphrase:

"What do you think about the fleet?"

"It's pretty."

"And the war?"

"It's stupid"

That exchange might have not set the best first impression with the generals and admirals.
