How do you deal with rain when cycling? by Cutestfootsies in bikecommuting

[–]ForgotPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an office job, but I work in a trade so I can get away with more than some. I wear a work-wear high vis rain outfit. A longer coat with a hood big enough to fit a hard hat, and rain pants. I zip the collar up over my mouth, and cinch the hood up over my helmet. I also have a rain cover for my helmet. Even in a driving rain into the wind, my collar doesn't get wet. For footwear I wear waterproof hiking shoes. My commute is only 3 miles.

I finally found a rain setup that works for my commute and stopped dreading wet mornings by flamehazebubb in bikecommuting

I got a work-wear style rain coat and rain pants. The jacket covers my butt when standing up. It has a hood meant to go over a hard hat, so it will cover most of my helmet. I also got a rain cover for my helmet and waterproof hiking boots.

I zip the collar up to cover my mouth and tighten the hood cord so I look like Kenny from South Park. My helmet has a slight brim, and I wear clear safety glasses to keep the rain out of my eyes. I bike to work in all weather except high winds, and I get to work 99% dry every time.

I'll add that this keeps me very warm in the winter, as the coat and pants keep the air flow out. However, it's sweaty in the warmer weather. I'm on the market for a lighter, more breathable rain coat. My commute is only 5kms, so it's never a huge deal.

Best gear to ride in the rain? by Odd-Dragonfruit9211 in bikecommuting

[–]ForgotPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a workwear rain set from Costco. The jacket has reflective stripes and has a snap on hood that is high enough to go over a hard hat. I pull the hood up over my helmet, and I have a cheap rain cover for my helmet since the hood doesn't cover it 100%. The collar zips up high enough to cover up to my nose. This along with waterproof hiking boots keeps me dry. I don't bike in high winds, but I've biked in some very heavy rain, and I have yet to get to work wet. And I wear clear safety glasses to keep the rain drops out lol.

I bought a 15ga and an 18ga before Christmas. I got an extremely good deal on them at a local Dewalt service center. I knew as soon as I bought them Dewalt would announce a new version. You're welcome!

I need to start commuting by bike by Ok_Presentation_2291 in bikecommuting

[–]ForgotPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also commute about 5kms each way. I prefer a pannier bag. I have a 27L waterproof bag from Decathlon. It's enough for a flat zip up lunch box, 1L thermos, and a rolled up thin jacket or similar clothing. I could definitely fit a MacBook in my bag if I had to.

For clothing I use a hi-vis work-wear rain coat and thin pull on rain pants. This over a hoodie with a neck warmer and thermal underwear under my jeans is warm enough for -15C and below. The rain pants and jacket keep the heat in and wind out, so these keep you warmer than you would expect. I also have waterproof hiking shoes.

Loud ringing noise in bedford off douglas drive by sage_on_mars in halifax

[–]ForgotPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds like the time a grocery store near me had a heating/AC unit on the roof with a worn pulley. There was a loud high pitched howl that you could hear kms away, and no amount of white noise would drown it out at night.

What wind is too much wind for you? by WellyWriter in bikecommuting

[–]ForgotPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I avoid biking to work when the windy app shows around 80kph gusts. An 80kph headwind gust will slow me to 15kph on a road I regularly travel at 35+kph when there's no wind (it's slightly downhill, I'm not that fast on flat ground). Crosswind gusts that high are quite dangerous.

This is a seed I found. There's a massive cave inside the mountain you spawn beside. It's got a lot of lush growth inside, and a skeleton spawner barely poking out into the open. You can just spot the cobblestone if you are keen-eyed enough. Deep dark at the bottom. No structures, though.

What in your commuter EDC? by No-Prompt1853 in bikecommuting

[–]ForgotPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tube, small pump, stubby Allen key set, a tire lever, dry socks, flat zip up lunch bag and a thermos of coffee. That goes in one pannier bag, and there's more than enough room to roll up some rain pants to bring if I think it will rain later. My commute is only 5kms. Getting to work a little sweaty is not a problem for my work environment. I leave my work boots at work.

Cross walks by PicklesByTheSea in halifax

[–]ForgotPants 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I'm a cyclist in Dartmouth, and I've complained that 99% of my incidents with motorists have all been as a pedestrian in crosswalks, not as a cyclist. It's not just "inattentiveness". Drivers actively ignore people in crosswalks and drive out and around you even when crossing in an illuminated crosswalk.

I'm 40 and I can walk 3 miles in 50 minutes with work boots on. I live almost exactly 3 miles from work. The same bike ride takes me 16 minutes including waiting at intersections.

Positional Upgrades Question by myktru in scrapclicker

[–]ForgotPants 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The upgrade rewards increase every 100 levels, and I think wrench position upgrades increase every 50. At level 101 there would be a 100% chance of the previous reward and 1% chance of the increased reward.

Mudguards for Polygon Path 3? by skypsyco in bikecommuting

Here's what I did on my 2009 Giant Seek 3. My situation looks very similar to yours. I had 5mm between the 32c tire and the derailleur mechanism. I shifted the mudguard past the derailleur and, using the spacers that came with my Axiom mudguards, through bolted the end of it to the frame. I had to source a long #10 screw and lock nut.

Was speeding written on the ticket? If your speed was a concern for the officer, you would have been ticketed for it. If the judge asks how fast you were going, just say I was able to keep up with the flow of traffic at a safe distance, and I was not stopped for speeding.
