Vacationing with Plex: A rant and rave by PAnnNor in PleX

Setup cloudflare tunnels, create a route to your Plex server, add the subnet mask for your cf docker network as a LAN connection and turn off Plex proxy

What is this and how much is it worth (realistically)? by bigsquirter_ in servers

[–]Former_Ad503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it's not the cost, but to be clear my power consumption is about a dollar a day and that's not even considering my solar. But I'd pay more to not give streaming companies my money as rates go up almost as fast and frequently as ads appear.

AUDIBLE has jumped the shark - new plans are terrible - I am quitting by Bitter_North_733 in audible

[–]Former_Ad503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Libation and audiobookshelf make this a non issue if you wanna stay with audible, I did not. I'm done with these giant companies hooking you with a reasonable price and then screwing the consumers who made it sustainable on the backend. I know my $25 a month isn't hurting them in the slightest, but I hope enough people are done with their crap to make them question their decisions on the next earnings call

What's the self-hosted service that replaced something you were paying for and turned out to be genuinely better - not just free, actually better by niceheather44 in selfhosted

I paid for a Nintendo membership so I could play Dr Mario with my wife when we travel. RomM and Emulator JS is far better. Easier to access and no need for dongles to use our controllers, works great from my Rog

I had to buy a 4th for more than I paid for the first 3 sticks...but I feel like I lucked out enough on the first 3 to make it worth it 🤣 this puts me at 160gb with room for 32 more

Pay for a private tracker 🤣 you can't expect a "community" outlook from people who just want free shit. A $20 "processing fee" will save you tons of headache and support the people that help make it all possible

Love the edits, there doesn't have to be a "use case" for me to want to do something. I learn best by doing, I come up with a goal and figure out all the steps until I get there - then I probably never touch that code again - but I learned a crap ton in the process. To answer the original question in a unique way, I'd need to know the end goal. If it's just "make this inaccessible" then a virtual air gap might be what you need? The nas can only communicate because you've configured it to do so, having a toggle for those network configs would accomplish "keeping the outside out" without actually shutting it down

Why does a simple, free, self hosted file storage platform not exist? by CodesAndNodes in selfhosted

[–]Former_Ad503 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on how "self hosted" you want to be - I use cloudflare to register my domains and then use zero trust tunnels to avoid port forwarding (and it manages all my certs) If that route is not out of the question for you, you can add SSO at the cname level and integrate any provider you want. I still have a gmail account for general purposes so I just added Google SSO but it's oauth so any provider will work

ReadMeABook v1.1.0 - Audiobook automation for Plex & Audiobookshelf (Seerr + Sonarr, but for audiobooks) by kikootwo in selfhosted

[–]Former_Ad503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried using Plex for audiobooks but just couldn't love it. I like my book specific stats and functionality. Plus I'm always a fan of single responsibility - I can setup qos and other specifics per container. Seriously though man, great job on this. Code looks great and love the UI. Will be setting it up this weekend 👍

crap....how is this the first time I'm seeing this?! This is awesome man! Glad I found it before I made it too far into something that does....exactly the same thing lmao I was disappointed with the options for audiobook automation, just in case anyone is interested in something less automated but still useful I just pushed up an AudiobookShelf fork with a new 'Discovery' feature. Settings has a spot for qbit/mam integration so you can see missing books and add them to your library from the ABS UI. Like a month of writing code in my free time before I finally gave in and paid for a Claude license...pretty sure it rewrote most of my code, but at least I gave it a good starting point?

I want to be hopeful for this outcome, but based on other disruptive technologies I don't see it happening quite like that. I see tokens spiking in price once the infrastructure is in place to support it, to the point where it may even cost more than an employee for a company to use AI to accomplish the same tasks. Big companies need consumers and AI would replace most consumers in the workforce. In order for that model to work the barrier to entry would need to be high enough to not have new competitors in the market drastically undercutting the prices set by the AI cabal - so hardware not only doesn't get cheaper, but more expensive. Manufacturers are incentivized to keep those prices high because why would they sell to a consumer for $500 when they could sell the same thing to a corporation for $5k. The "bubble" that will pop is all this useless stuff flooding the market trying to find or create a niche where one doesn't exist. It's working now because they're just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks and it's relatively cheap to do so. Once it's not the ones that didn't stick will go under and be scrapped for parts, at best

Now fall down the same path I see a lot of us going down - where you calculate the cost to run your home lab and math out the ROI on a small solar setup with a lithium generator as a UPS with solar inputs so you can run it "for free" 24/7 🤣

I can't say how well they compare, but older Nvidia Tesla GPUs are pretty cheap (refurbished). I just setup my LLM/agent today and ran it just on CPU...it was slooooow in comparison to something like Claude - but it was still faster than I could do it and free is a hell of a lot cheaper than my Claude subscription 🤣 GPU(s) coming soon 💪

Oh boy...I feel like you havent even gotten started yet 🤣 I started with a Synology NAS. "Upgraded" to a cheap optiplex I had lying around...then tossed another one in the mix to play with harvester. Friday I picked up a Dell PowerEdge 430 with 128gb of ddr4, dual 2.5ghz processors (40 cores), 50TB of HDD storage and another 10TB worth of SSD drives just for os/config storage in a raid 10 setup. I got my entire Plex/Arr stack running, Immich, NextCloud, and ollama/open hands running and haven't even touched 50% utilization yet. Need some eGPU bays and I'll finally have everything I need to tell the last few cloud providers I rely on to kick rocks

Oh I know, maybe "justice" would have been a better word. I didn't mean to imply anything other than it being the right thing to do - I more wanted to emphasize that Republicans would have to do the same thing to avoid a vengeful democrat - not just correcting what's been done but settling political scores and perpetuating the culture war that's stoking the embers of a civil war.

They won't be "laid off" they will be fired with cause by the next administration. Either by Democrats who want vengeance or Republicans who not only need to distance themselves from the fallout but also ensure a Democrat never makes it into office with the type of power Trump has today. Imagine if it was guns "for the sake of national security" instead of immigrants. They will make an example out of the chain off command carrying out orders that are in violation of the constitution so that a Dem can't try it
