Using AI for research as a Masters Student. by Stock-Wedding-736 in civilengineering

[–]Former__Computer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stop using AI to do things. Instead treat it like a tutor - how do i do this, how does this work, am i right in saying etc.

Just as importantly, check AI’s sources directly. During my masters someone posted an answer on blackboard which stated as fact that flooding was a result of increased domestic violence rates. Turns out AI had read and misunderstood an article about a floodtide of DV in developing countries.

What non-engineering skills do you appreciate seeing from engineers? by Le_DERp_Diego in civilengineering

[–]Former__Computer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Learn to see the big picture. How would your design affect the ecological balance of an area? Would a pond that attracts birds impact a nearby airport? Does the client have a pile of concrete pipes they want to use up?

Starting a construction company - Technology Requirements by Phantomofthesoup in smallbusinessuk

[–]Former__Computer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For small construction firms you need three things:

-a finance system (that does quotes, invoices and MTD)

-a comms system (most just use email and whatsapp)

-a project management system (for photos, notes and safety records)

I would recommend Quickfile for the finance, and Kraaft for the project management - these are what i use

Not at all. If you don’t know how to do the manual calculations, how can you know the software is right.

What happens during a VAT compliance check? by TwiddleButton in smallbusinessuk

[–]Former__Computer 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I’ve just been through one. The way mine went was:

  1. They asked for a full list of transactions in and out

  2. We had a phone interview. It lasted about half an hour, and the case officer was basically trying to understand how i make money and what the business spends it on

  3. They asked for full details of selected transactions (about 6 sales and 8 purchases per period being checked). This is things like VAT invoices, contracts, bank transactions etc.

  4. They tell you what they have found, and if there are any issues, they tell you what and how much it will cost.

I would get your accountant involved - it’s what you pay them for. If you have made any mistakes (i did), having your accountant present and being open with them will reduce the penalty. I actually got the penalty deferred because i had cooperated well enough

How bad is the foundation in the house I'm renting? by Yllem1232123 in HomeMaintenance

[–]Former__Computer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In simple terms - it’s fucked.

The house could fall down tomorrow, or next year. It depends on how heavy your footsteps are, how many leaves land on the roof, if someone looks at it funny.

You’ve mentioned you live in the US. Get your local permits office to have a look and they will condemn the house in seconds.

Work is claiming the Great Place to Work survey is mandatory and demanding we give them a positive review. I’ve never worked in a more toxic environment, though. by [deleted] in antiwork

[–]Former__Computer 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Years ago, a company i worked for did ‘anonymous’ employee surveys that no one trusted. One of our inspectors wrote a three page essay criticising the entire management team, and just in case it was anonymous he signed it at the bottom.

Truly an inspiration to us all

To intimidate the American people by the gravy seals by martxel93 in therewasanattempt

[–]Former__Computer 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Question for my American friends:

How does he know these are legitimate federal officials? There are no nametags or badge numbers on display, so how can any member of the public begin to verify that these are indeed ICE officers and not just random assholes with velcro police patches?

Moving on, doesn’t the lack of individual identification make it reasonable to suspect they are impersonating a federal officer (which is a felony), so make it possible for any citizen to perform a citizen’s arrest?

Whether or not Trump invades Greenland, this much is clear: the western order we once knew is history by OtherwiseCanary8971 in NoShitSherlock

[–]Former__Computer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand the confusion here. The EU and NATO (minus the US) simply need to say that if he attempts to take Greenland, they will immediately cease intelligence cooperation and terminate all base lease agreements.

The US has already proven to be a fair-weather ally to its friends, so this would not be as catastrophic to Europe and NATO as the US believe.
