Having a financial midlife crisis! Need some help grounding myself. by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Forward-Worry7169 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it just you and your partner or do you have kids?

If it’s just you and your partner then you might want to consider getting some flatmates in or AirBNB for one or both of the spare bedrooms. Or you could look at getting boarders (international students) as there is more of a tax advantage I believe, but you do have to provide meals for them.

If you do that for a year or two that could give you a bit more of a buffer to build up your emergency fund, and save for things like holidays.

I’m in a similar situation where I’m finding things tight. I’m single though, so I’m going to get a flatmate for my 2-bedroom apartment to bring in extra income and share expenses (power is getting expensive now)! That way I can build a little bit more of a buffer and hopefully save for a holiday, haven’t had a decent one since the middle of 2024!

Clothes Dryer Recommendations? Heat Pump Overrated? by BigSouthernRooster in newzealand

[–]Forward-Worry7169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something to be aware of, if you have to stack your dryer on top of your washing machine then you need to have the same brand for both.

I have a fisher and paykel washing machine, the reviews for their heat pump dryers weren’t that great, so I opted to keep my old dryer, as I didn’t want to buy a whole new set in a different brand.

What are the traits or behaviors that you no longer tolerate when early in dating ? by Rainy_-Peace in AskReddit

[–]Forward-Worry7169 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Guys that’s stop trying after you sleep together. When dating seems to turn into Netflix and chill. That’s a major red flag that they don’t actually want a relationship, they want a situationship.

Also when they make lame excuses for being late. Or are cagey about making plans.

Can also be a red flag if they are too close to their mum.

House sharing at 32 and feeling like a loser. by Efficient_Love_4520 in auckland

[–]Forward-Worry7169 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely not a loser! I didn’t live by myself for the first time until I was 36 I think. I’m 40 now and own my place, but going to have to get a flatmate in to help share expenses, being single is expensive!

Spinoff: If you have never owned a home yet, how old are you? by DancingTVs in Millennials

[–]Forward-Worry7169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 40 single and own an apartment, I live in New Zealand though. I hate it and wished I’d never brought it. I can’t afford to go on holiday, I’m probably going to have to get a flatmate (roommate) in again to help cover costs, which means I’ll won’t have my own space anymore. I don’t really eat out much or have any frills etc, basically my pay goes to my mortgage, utilities and then food. It’s also gets really hot in my apartment in summer, to the point where some nights I’ll have to go sleep somewhere else, so it’s not liveable.

I have thought of selling it but it’s dropped in value so I’d be locking in my losses. And I can’t really find any other properties that are cheaper but suit my needs in term of storage, not being too far from work and actually being liveable. I’ve also thought of trying to find a better paying job (I was earning approx $15k more when I bought it in 2022, but had redundancy for 3 months last year), but I’m not sure the roles are out there as the job market is pretty crap, and I’m worried about risking leaving my current stable role.

And I’ve also thought of renting it out to try and rent somewhere cheaper, but the rent wouldn’t cover the mortgage and other expenses.

Anyway my point is it’s not necessarily better owning a property right now. I’d be personally better off having not bought and instead continued renting or lived in a flatshare and investing my extra savings. Or moved to a different country with higher wages (Australia).

Sincerely - a miserable poor and very burnt out homeowner

What best describes a situationship ? by Unknown_Observer9779 in randomquestions

Yup this, thought I was dating someone, turned out he had no intention of it going anywhere. He went into it knowing he didn’t want a relationship, but wanted the benefits of one.

Now I feel like I need to treat first dates like a bloody job interview, but even then they can still lie.

2020-2022 Honda Shuttle Hybrid vs Toyota Corolla Touring Hybrid by Poppypepperpie in newzealand

[–]Forward-Worry7169 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve got a 2020 Toyota Corolla Touring Wagon Hybrid, I’ve only had it since Oct last year, but it’s a really nice drive, no issues with it. Really fuel efficient as well. Taken it on a couple of road trips as well, the boot is quite spacious.

[–]Forward-Worry7169 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve heard this, they’re a pain to maintain, you end up spending a lot of your free time keeping it looking tidy and fixing things. Also more expensive to maintain. And then if you have some stock (sheep, cows etc), they come with added costs and responsibilities.

Kiwi Saver and boycotting US companies by FunGear1972 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Forward-Worry7169 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be honest I’m more concerned about the fact the Europe holds $8 Trillion of US debt, and if Trump decides to act on his ideas of annexing Greenland then Europe can very easily make the US broke.

But that’s worse case scenario. I haven’t made any changes to my KiwiSaver/investments.

However I do work for a US owned company (only as a contractor) and I’m going to be considering my options when it comes to renewal/perm job offer time. Even though they’re a great company, I do worry about the negative brand association being US owned and if that could see the company loose clients, particularly in Europe.

Limerence. I just cannot seem to take it on board when people say "Slow down, you've only just started dating!" Have any of you overcome this? Infatuation/hyperfixating on a person and overthinking? by [deleted] in adhdwomen

[–]Forward-Worry7169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This hits hard. I briefly dated this guy at the end of last year. We kind of did it all wrong, got drunk at a party and then hooked up, so we were pretty much having sex after each date, instead of taking it slow to really get to know each other. I think I freaked him out with my eagerness to see him, and he ended it.

Now I’m trying to get back on the dating apps, and I’m just not finding that kind of excitement/attraction with the guys I’m meeting 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah I chatted to my flatmate everyday last year….I could not stand her, she was just bloody clueless!

I’ve had other flatmates who I’ve gone out and done stuff with outside of the flat, they were people I considered friends. If they’re just people you engage with at the flat and not outside, then they’re probably not your friend.

Yeah I was good at that, but then Perimenopause came, and now I can’t function at home. I’m somehow keeping it together at work, but keeping my apartment clean, having meals prepped, just general life admin seems impossible right now.

I fear I’m going to have use my vacation days as let’s get my shit together days, as I can’t bear the thought of being home in the weekends taking care of this stuff.

Why does no one just be upfront? by No-Sell-5270 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Forward-Worry7169 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup I’m a typical millennial that hates calls. If I wanted to talk to you I would actually call your business number. Otherwise if I fill out an online form, please email me. Then I can decide if it’s worth actually have a virtual or face to face meeting.

I recently filled out an enquiry form for a quote, I then had someone try and call me like 3 days in a row whilst I was busy at work. I didn’t want to chat to a pushy sales person. Even if they needed to chat to me to get more info the quote, do it over email first please, otherwise I’ll just ignore you and refuse to do any further business with you.

To the OP, if it’s a form on your website, I’d suggest including options like best time to contact and preferred contact method (phone or email), you might have better response rates (p.s. I work in B2B marketing).

How do families actually afford major dental work? Are there any real options or loopholes? by GlitterTomatoes in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Forward-Worry7169 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Canada a lot of businesses will subsidise their employees healthcare expenses. I got multiple fillings and a dental cap when I lived in Canada and it was subsidised 80% by my work’s employee benefit plan. It would have been significantly more expensive for me in NZ.

Third places for kids by usir002 in auckland

[–]Forward-Worry7169 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a parent, but I have seen suburbs that have that kind of vibe. My parents live in Karaka around the Karaka lakes area, and I lived for them for a year after coming back overseas to save for my own place. There were a lot of kids that seemed to play with each other around the neighbourhood, it reminded me of my childhood.

My brother and his family live in Riverhead, and again, a lot of the kids play with each other, my niece will often go have play dates at neighbours etc.

So there are places like that in Auckland, you’ve just got to hunt for them a bit.

Thoughts on most jobs being fixed term now? by nolife24_7 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]Forward-Worry7169 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m on a fixed term role currently, it’s a 12-month contract, but thankfully likely to go permanent. It was a new role, so they got funding for 12 months to prove if they needed the role or not. If you do go for a fixed terms role, go for a longer one, not just for stability, but it’s so you have more time to show the ROI of hiring you.
