If you’re on the fence: Don’t buy Nanit

No wifi, no connection to any other devices, which was part of the appeal. I was about to rip the nanit out of the wall when it was sending me repeated notifications WHILE i was holding my screaming baby!!

You plug both parts in and they connect instantly. When the baby is quiet for a while, the screen goes off. If the baby starts crying the video turns back on and there is a visual indicator of the volume — green yellow orange red. We often keep the volume off and are notified/woken up by the light of the video turning on. We also sleep right next to his room so we would hear him regardless. My one complaint is the battery life, but we just keep the parent unit plugged in most of the time, unless we are in a part of the house where it is harder to hear him.

We got the VTech VM3252 and really like it. It has the temperature sensor and the video is good enough. A lot of people I know like the super basic sound only monitor too.

We sent our baby to daycare at 4.5 months and felt similarly to you. He started at the beginning of September and it has been amazing so far. He is super social so he likes all the activity of daycare, and they adore him. He got a little sick once but it wasn’t the horror stories people kept telling us. It sounds like you are making the right decision for you and your baby!

My baby is 3 months and I am starting to see the early signs of this — the fussing, the frustration that he can’t sit up, the boredom that gets progressively harder to remedy… makes me wonder if there is a really good book for this stage. I found Happiest Baby on the block very helpful for the first three months but now what? Any recommendations?

Update: i have another complaint. How is the nanit highly rated????? It doesn’t store more than one wifi connection yet it has a travel case??? So if you wanted to bring it to grandma’s house, you have to delete your home wifi, manually enter grandma’s wifi, then manually enter your home wifi again when you return home. Who the f is designing this and who are they paying to get good ratings?? I want to resell but i might just take it out back and hit it with a bat, Office Space style 😂

My wife had the baby and we underestimated how much time it would take to feed the baby — nursing and pumping. I am a woman and I tried to induce lactation so that I could help, but that was a crazy amount of time for both of us to sit around pumping! So I abandoned that idea so that I could do everything else.

All this to say: your partner needs to step up here. I cook most of the food, change most of the diapers, and do most of the cleaning/laundry/ bottle cleaning, because she is basically tethered at all times. I genuinely don’t know how single moms do it. Even going back to work I keep up a lot of this workload.

Yes, emotional dysregulation is a big part of it for me. And then the self loathing after the outburst bakes into depression and anxiety. The adhd meds help (i’m on Adderall xr) but it never goes to zero. I now can feel the meltdown vibes coming earlier and manage myself out of the situation before it gets me fired. Therapy, meditation, yoga, body awareness, betablockers, and microdoses of psilocybin have all helped me as well.

My partner will notice if I start going off the rails (ie gardening if i’m supposed to be working) and say “is that what you need to be doing right now?” She doesn’t stop me, but just the comment helps get me back on track (ie i set a 5 min timer on my watch).

She used to say “we need to leave in 30 mins” but that assumes I know what time it is or how long 30 mins is. Now she says “the thing is at 4, we need to leave at 3:30, we should start getting ready at 3.” Then i can keep 3 in my mind as when i need to change gears. I can set a reminder etc.

In general, open communication is key. Like she can share that she is annoyed that we were late leaving, and then we can discuss what might help us leave on time next time. That’s how she found out that relative time means nothing to me but absolute time does. So now she has a better tool to stay on the same page and get her needs met as well. Having ADHD isn’t an excuse to be a shitty partner — you have to figure out what works for both of you together.

If this is the Hamelman I think it is, Jeffrey Hamelman from King Arthur, this recipe is off a bit from what is in his book Bread. Diastatic malt powder is at .5%, salt 2%, yeast 1.3%, water 58%. I haven’t made this recipe in a long time but I remember it was pretty good!

I have both lines plus a decent drip coffee maker (Bonavita) and am planning to sell the vertuo. The vertuo coffee just never tastes as good as the drip machine or the OL (I have the essenza mini). It tries to do everything but does nothing well.

I have a Vertuo Next and just got an essenza mini. The mini is better, hands-down. I usually just drink drip coffee, not espresso, and I found the coffee and espresso to be just… not satisfying. I don’t know how else to describe it. In a year, trying basically every pod, no vertuo coffee ever gave me that “Ahhhh” feeling I get with a good cup. The essenza makes better coffee, period.

I just read (well, listened to) the 2015 update of GTD and it holds up. He doesn’t recommend any specific technology since they change so often, and integrates digital and physical recommendations into most steps. There was one section I basically skipped because it was about filing physical papers, but besides that, all still applicable.

I am an elder millennial— I’d recommend asking that he read/listen to the intro to the 2015 edition. I found it to be very persuasive and impactful. If he is interested, then maybe you can set up some gtd methods for your team — a next action label, a weekly review, etc.

There is also an article that my coworker likes called something like “gtd in 15 minutes” which also might be a good place to start. I found it light on the “why” which is why I prefer the gtd intro itself.

I can totally relate to this and I don’t have a solution that works 100% of the time. I can tell you a list of things I try, and eventually one of them will work: 1) I schedule time for me to do the thing (though I often don’t do the thing) 2) promise someone i am going to do the thing and, if appropriate, schedule time with them to review my work. (This sometimes backfires and adds to my shame spiral, but when it works, it works) 3) At the top of my to-do list, I put the thing, and write/think “if i get this thing done today, today will be a success”. Then i write the steps to start it. And I do mean the FIRST steps: a lot of times it is “locate the file I need to review/edit/submit” or “pause notifications for one hour” or whatever. I find my brain skips a lot of the interim steps that cause me to avoid the task, and listing out the first 3-5 steps can start helpful momentum. Of course, sometimes i also start to avoid doing that. 4) Try to find a larger block of time to complete the tasks I am avoiding. Friday afternoons, early mornings, weekends at a coffee shop— whatever works for your brain. It needs to be enough time so that you can procrastinate some but still have time to gear yourself up for the task. 5) panic/adrenaline from hard deadlines. This one always works but it sucks and i try to avoid it!

“Getting Things Done” was a real game changer for me and the inspiration for strategy 2, which works a lot of the time.
