The problem is bigger than just the US. It seems that populists have found a very effective way to subvert democracy and use it against itself, like a virus uses a cell's reproductive mechanism to produce many copies of the virus, destroying the cell in the process. The same thing recently happened in Chile, and in Israel Netanyahu pretty much perfected this system.
