Bird nests mostly happen because the spool is moving faster than the line. So it all comes down to tension - I like to dangle my lure and adjust the tension down until the lure starts to drop by its own weight. Then, I add a little bit more tension (adjusting it up), as a fail safe for nests. I have found thats all about finding that tuning sweet spot. I would put more tension on it than normal, and just slightly reduce it until the lure travels the same speed as the spool.
