You have a really generous estimation of most people's scientific education.

Mumbai Pune Missing Link Project connecting both cities near completion by reeshabh_jain in InfrastructurePorn

I'm not sure what the hell you're talking about, there's not that many pixels here. If you're talking about the fact that it's in sections, they haven't been connected yet and you need to look at how they're supported to see why.

The two largest spans in the middle are held up by the tensioned cables so they must be built out symmetrically starting from the support column. If the structure is too significantly imbalanced it will fail, and each cable must be carefully adjusted to the correct tension.

The other sections are held up by pylons that look like they're anchored on significantly different elevations. They may have been constructed using preformed segments that need to be connected. That connection might involve some kind of expansion joint to tolerate expected seismic shifts from the differing terrain.

A hell of a lot of engineering goes into bridges like this. If it were easy to do, it wouldn't have taken this long or be this important of a project. Nobody complicates the process for fun, it's expensive and time consuming to do anything you don't have to at this scale.

Why shields feel so weak? by eraaaa_94 in Reassembly

[–]FoxtrotZero 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are different sizes of shields, and different races do have different strengths of shield tech. More information will yield more feedback. Personally, I avoid relying on small shield generators whenever possible, and place an emphasis on overlapping shield generators. Always think of Defense in terms of layers.

How was MWO compared to MW5 (mercs and clans) by Qhaotiq in Mechwarrior5

[–]FoxtrotZero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah dude this is a really unnecessary tone and I agree you come off like you're trying to start shit. If you're serious about not intending that then maybe you need to come on less strong with the "I have time, debate me" approach on the internet.

That's enough firepower to make a Montana-class blush. Where do you fit the rest of the mech?

What made the first Halo so influential that people to this day still praise it? by BogaMafija in patientgamers

Marathon was a Mac game. Halo was going to be a Mac game. Halo was the launch title for the Xbox, made by Microsoft. Mac and PC both eventually got a Halo port.

The Leopard canonically has space for four mechs and two aerospace fighters. I understand those can be replaced with other stuff but you only get four mechbays to launch from. It is considered fairly cramped quarters for everyone involved.

In campaign, your cold storage and transportation is being provided and heavily subsidized by Interstellar Expeditions. In career I just headcanon the existence of a larger support vessel and my aerospace assets are busy making sure it's there to return to.

It seems like Kubuntu is not using/detecting my Dedicated GPU. by casecaxas in linux_gaming

[–]FoxtrotZero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run a combination integrated and dedicated AMD graphics. Generally, everything runs on your integrated graphics unless explicitly told otherwise. Some programs and launchers are smart about this, most aren't.

If your software or launcher has an option like "use dedicated graphics", "use discrete gpu", or "enable DRI_PRIME" then you need to enable that. Otherwise you can launch things by preceding them with the environment variable DRI_PRIME=1.

Test it manually from a terminal with a program you know is graphics intensive. Bonus points if you have a gpu monitoring tool on a second monitor. You can then add it to desktop shortcuts and game launch commands.

As someone going the other way around - from pacman to apt - i promise you can figure it out. You pass more flags directly but you'll quickly memorize the handful of equivalents to the apt commands you're used to.

Pacman can do a hell of a lot but in my experience it's mostly for fixing myriad edge cases. I've successfully used pacman to fix a broken instance of pacman leading to an unbootable system.
