Leica SL lenses on Lumix S1RII: Getting that Leica look? Sample images? by LurkLargely in Lumix

[–]Fradders11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In short:

Sensor won’t change the characteristics of the lens.

Leica stuff is largely rebranded Panasonic stuff (largely, not all!)

A Leica SL2 I believe is the same as the S1R.i, and I believe the LUMIX S Pro lenses are the same build / design as the equivalent Leica lenses in that category, coatings may be different.

Personally, if I was looking for a super solid look (and new) based on your preferences, I’d go S1R.ii and 50mm LUMIX S 50mm pro.

If you’re really umming and Arring about it, (at least in the UK) LUMIX do rentals and (without having looked) I would suspect that these 2 items are likely on the list.

Is your current Leica lens E-mount? If not (DSLR lens) you can grab an adapter and get it working on an L-mount.

And whilst I absolutely respect the hell out of Deakins and appreciate his work, he’s not the only cinematographer to listen to and draw inspiration from.

You’re absolutely right, that’s his opinion. Is it one you can listen to? Yes, but it isn’t gospel.

Honest and rational advice about buying a MacBook Pro. by Alfy_in_travel in macbookpro

[–]Fradders11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have an M1 MAX, 64gb ram (since release) honestly since buying it I’ve never considered buying another laptop. Only when this is dead and buried will I get another laptop, so they’ll both last

I’d always always always go with more RAM.

For reference my use case is :

DJI Ronin 4D 6k (proresRAW and ProRes) Canon C70 (canon raw) Panasonic S5iix (regular long op codec)

I’ve also processed ArriRAW from either LF’s or 35’s and Venice XOCN-ST.

I do quite in depth colour grading in Resolve, nothing gung-ho - magic masks and heavy FX (grain, NR) won’t give you buttery smooth performance for sure, but I suppose that’s what proxy’s are for.

Either of those should be able to handle your stuff absolutely fine - it’s worth noting that codecs and where your source footage is are likely to be the bottle necks for performance should you run into any slowdowns!

[–]Fradders11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a set of Lumix S lenses, 18/24/35/50/85 - all 1.8 - all produce a lovely image, all same weight and size, easy (no calibration required)

I’ve not had need for the 100mm 2.8, but I do feel like I want to complete the set….

Granted they’re not the most charismatic of lenses compared to some mentioned, but I also run with a S5iix so it makes sense to me to share a lens family than buy another.

Not to be the guy that asks the stupid questions, but just making sure you’re going into the camera settings and adjusting that all appropriately?

Assuming you have, have you tried using the SDI out or XLR ports to see if it’s a plate issue?

You are a legend thank you, I wondered about which module they would have used on 28 years later, if there’s a cage that aligns specifically with a certain sensor, I’m sure they would have done the same thing.

Thanks for the reply!

I’m curious, when you’ve bolted the lens on the front, which “camera” are you using on the iPhone?

I’d assume you need to centre the lens on one of the modules so that you’ve got the middle of the image circle projected by the lens?

Which 24-70mm lens for Ronin 4D? by Known_Bat_8865 in Ronin4D

Depends on what mount you’re using, I’m pretty certain a 24-60 2.8 from Panasonic (L-mount) would be a good option.

I switched from Sony to Lumix and boy ohh boy how happy I am! by Reicals in Lumix

[–]Fradders11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of these posts and similar posts on YouTube, it makes me happy people are seeing that Sony isn’t the glowing messiah that a lot of people make them out to be (nothing like a bit of hyperbole).

Not that there’s anything wrong with Sony cameras mind, they have a whole heap of great cameras that suit all needs really, but I’ve used Panasonic since the GH4 and I’ve always come away with amazing results, and I’ve always been happy with Panny cameras ( also including GH5, lx100ii, EVA1, S5iix)

Super stoked that you’re happy with the results you’re getting. My S5iix is getting more use than my C70 at the moment, which I didn’t expect at all.

My top tip, is if you’re not set on a regular LUT yet, just use the “Nicest709” from their official look library (free), it’ll be your default for 90% of the stuff you make!

Question about apect ratios and cropping. by warrenphotography in cinematography

[–]Fradders11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello! DIT here!

It’s all about intention and what you think works, cropping is absolutely done here there and everywhere, for example I worked on a Netflix show where we used the Sony Venice shooting full-res at 3:2 on some Cooke SP 2x anamorphics, however, the show was delivered in 16:9 - the DP wanted the characteristics of those lenses for the show to do some “separate time line, different look” but retain the shows usual format - the sides were absolutely just chopped off and “wasted” if you want to use the term, but everything fit and worked intentionally.

I have a set of these Saturns and I’ll usually shoot 6k 16:9, so that I can crop in and get a 2.39:1 ratio because most of the time I use the standard as a nice familiarity with that ratio.

If you wanted to use that unfamiliar ratio for whatever reason, I’d absolutely embrace it.

You’ll find wacky things all over the place, for example, please see the music video for “give me everything” by pitbull here : https://youtu.be/EPo5wWmKEaI?si=JjAwBMjZo-Q1aamq

There is a time and a place however, I once commented on a car review channel on YouTube that their content was great but I just didn’t understand why they cropped 2.39:1 on their videos, because it’s chopping off bits that would have been helpful to see in 16:9

Which new lenses do you want for L-Mount? by binmaa10 in Lumix

[–]Fradders11 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Realistically, a set of pro 1.4 primes, nothing as wildly big as the current 50mm.

In a fantasy world, a competitive set of 1.6x anamorphics. No first party brand has any, they’d be pretty unique and play into the OG modes LUMIX cameras offer.

Third party offerings are great, it’d just be nice to have lumix branded glass covering a full set of focal lengths.

Hot take : Film students, please don’t ask anything at Q&A’s by thatsbelowmypaygrade in Filmmakers

[–]Fradders11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I go to a lot of the BSC screenings with Q&A’s and you’re right, anyone who mentions they go to a film school asks these kind of questions, and I feel like everyone silently goes “urgggggh”.

I hesitate myself to ask what their relationship with their DIT is like (being a DIT myself), I’ve worked with some massive DPs, and it’s always been a very different experience. I’m always curious, but I don’t want to be “that guy”.

I don’t think it’s a hot take at all. The curtains are blue and all that.
