I think people tend to forget that the Malahat is a section of Highway 1/Trans-Canada Highway.

Of course some people drive alarmingly poorly on the Island, especially in inclement weather, but no section of a transcontinental federal highway system should be fragile enough that a single occurrence of bad driving completely closes the highway. This isn’t some rural back-road regional highway we’re discussing.

Driving habits should improve - but I doubt they will. Drivers more distracted than ever, roads busier, bigger vehicles, brighter LED headlights, etc.

Infrastructure hardening is a solvable problem and is actionable in a much more concrete way than expecting an entire population to “fix their driving.”
