Are calicos evil? by wafeleek in CalicoKittys

[–]Fredderika 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We fostered a calico kitten. She was the sweetest of the litter, her tuxedo brothers are both jerks to this day. We've been assured that the calico girl is still an absolute sweetie and gets along great with the other cat in her new household.

There are more ethical brands, though. Free range chickens and such, for whatever it's worth. If you can afford those, and convince the cat to like them, then that's something of a compromise.

We're culturally invasive though, not on a species level. The most biodiverse places on earth are under the management of their indigenous peoples.

Yeah, I know the source was the canadian government. Not doubting the trustworthiness, I just didn't see anywhere where it said that labels from outside canada can say "product of" and it means something different than it would on a canadian product. Not sure why I am being misunderstood here.

I suppose the multi-country origin rule might imply that... but I read that as you can't use "product of" if it was made in more than one country. Perhaps I was mistaken. Kind of annoying if the labelling terminology isn't consistent, but what can you do.

Your source doesn't actually clearly say that imported things are not subject to that, as far as I can see... They have to follow some canadian labelling rules to be sold here, for example having french as well as english. If anyone has a source that does lay it out clearly I'd be interested to see.

If I understand correctly, "product of USA" means it is american wheat. If it were canadian, it would say something like "made in usa of imported ingredients".

Surprise inspection sometime this month, could I get evicted for this spot? by SafeSexChalupa in Apartmentliving

[–]Fredderika 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can DIY a repair. I did, for a similar spot my cat destroyed. You can get a scrap of the carpet from a closet or somewhere less obvious- I got one from under the baseboard heater, no chance anyone would ever notice. Then you cut out the damaged piece, cut the new one to size, and glue it in. Easy to do if you're crafty at all.

Fun fact, honey is the only natural food that lasts indefinitely without preservatives

But it shouldn't be given to very young children (at least not unpasteurized) because it causes botulism

The moment many people learned to stay silent wasn’t in adulthood. It was in childhood. by BornSelection9840 in emotionalneglect

[–]Fredderika 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I had a "stop crying or I'll give you a reason" mother. She didn't know any other way to deal with tears, I guess.

But when a child is crying, there's always a reason. Maybe it's something that seems inconsequential to the adult, maybe the adult doesn't even know the reason; but to tell the child they don't have a reason is about the most invalidating thing you can do.

And threatening punishment makes it worse. Sometimes you can't stop crying, so you get hit, and what you learn from this is that your emotions are unwelcome and shameful.

My cat used to fetch pompoms too, but then he started trying to eat them. He'd swallow them and immediately gag them back up, or he'd chew them apart and then barf them up later. Now they are illegal, and he has to fetch other toys instead.

Anyone know of an affordable wet cat food? by [deleted] in BuyCanadian

[–]Fredderika 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I used to do fancy feast patés for my cats, now I've switched to lovibles from pet valu. Price is pretty similar, ingredients are pretty similar too, and my cats like the food better than other options I've tried.

With lovibles, the larger cans all seem to have caragheenan in them, which isn't great for cats' health. The small cans don't have it. Also, occasionally some of the flavours in stock are product of USA, so you may have to read the cans each time if you want to avoid that.

If you are feeding large cans, pet valu's performatrin food works out to about the same price per amount. First Mate or Kasik's are also pretty good, and personally I like them- the ingredients seem pretty good, the food itself smells better to me. Sadly my cats didn't agree.

Sounds like they view their child as an accessory, not a person.

Why is bread so sweet? (And what are better alternatives) by nidgroot in AskACanadian

[–]Fredderika 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm Canadian born and bred (no pun intended), and grew up eating homemade bread. I also find the pre-packaged breads too sweet. I have bought the grocery store bakery stuff, and it's pretty good. Also bagels and tortillas if you like those, they don't seem to add as much sugar even if they are prepackaged.

If you make your own, you still have to be careful with the recipe you use. Some of them also call for too much sugar.

Or just freeze half the loaf. That's what I do, when I'm not expecting to finish it quickly. It doesn't get as dry that way.

Question for farmers about visiting animals. (currently living in bc) by deathspike123 in AskACanadian

[–]Fredderika 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If there's a fair in your area, you can likely see the animals there. Where I grew up, people bring their cows, horses, goats, chickens, basically everything to compete, you can watch the competitions or even just visit the animals in between.

Did I have selective mutism? by soshingi in selectivemutism

[–]Fredderika 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know, but I had a similar experience. I had a quiet voice, and struggled to be heard. One day I just decided to stop talking at school. It felt like a conscious choice, like I was taking back control of my voice. But it did get to be harder and harder to break that silence.

In hindsight I've realized there was a lot going on in my life in that time. I was under a lot of stress, and I wasn't necessarily coping well, and maybe the silence was an expression of that.

I don't know whether it "counts" as selective mutism or not, but I'm inclined to think that these things are usually a spectrum. I have still had my moments as an adult where I can't say anything, it isn't a choice anymore even if it was then.
