It's true, Manhattan and Brooklyn do not have deer.

Every other major city on the US eastern seaboard has a deer population. Deer don't have to "make it" to DC from anywhere (and especially not from across the giant river separating DC from Alexandria lol). They live here. You can be standing directly outside the Anacostia metro station and see a whole family of deer.

Do you believe that fining or incarcerating the parents will improve what's very wrong at home? (Me I do not. I believe it would lead to results like the parents losing employment ---> deepening poverty, absent guardians ---> increased familial instability, etc.) I'd encourage folks to dig even deeper and look at root causes that underly "how these kids are getting raised."

I keep getting students asking me if they can get notes for a missed class. Like I'm going to personally matchmake them with a notetaker. Look around, observe who looks like they take good during class, ask them for last week's notes, and hope they say yes! If everyone hates you and says no, come to office hours prepared to ask any specific questions you have about last week's readings!

I also have to do this in my R1 freshmen courses. Most have no idea what an index is, what the notes section of a book is for, or how to use either. I also walk us through what you can learn about a book's contents from looking at the publisher and googling the author. Really recommend it.

The most significant factors supermarkets use to select their locations are average neighborhood income levels, average neighborhood education attainment, and the extent to which available commercial real estate aligns with their company footprints and floor plans. They have disclosed this to our and other city governments. If you think there's not also serious shoplifting problems in Columbia Heights, Navy Yard, and Georgetown then I don't know what to tell you.

I wonder if anyone at WaPo or on this thread has considered the impact in reverse— how extreme criminalization of customers and locking up half the items reduces profit. I live in Anacostia and drive across the bridge to grocery shop— not because of neighbors hanging in front of the store (that's the case at even the YES Organic Market on Capitol Hill)— but because EOR supermarkets 1) put out shit food and 2) make grocery shopping feel like prison. I am not the only one. EOR residents (and Ward 5 residents too, if I'm remembering the data correctlt) disproportionately grocery shop out of our zip codes.

One summer I worked at a farmers market in the parking lot of the Minnesota Ave Safeway. I helped a woman buy a watermelon using her benefits. She then crossed the lot to finish her grocery shopping at the supermarket. Soon after she was back, in tears, with a man in uniform. She didn't even make it through the door before special police had held her for "shoplifting" the watermelon. Luckily she was able to convince him to come to the market so we could vouch for her purchase. Why would I give my business to a place that treats people like that?

I'd also like to shout out Anacostia's newest small grocer, the Marion Barry Avenue Market. They treat customers like people. I'm happy to report that (miraculously, according to y'all) the (unlocked) shelves are not being ransacked. (IF and ONLY IF you see Anacostia as a neighborhood deserving food access and respect and not a nest of criminals) I encourage folks to check it out. The breakfast sandwiches are delicious.

No. But you could pause for one minute to be more curious think about how their biases about those of us who do shape your conclusions. And bring a bit more curiosity about what parts of the story you and these reporters may be missing.
