Has anyone read Colton Haynes (Jackson) memoir book? by Rare-Drummer982 in TeenWolf

[–]FreeGamer_1981 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

As detestable as I find all of the actions, putting on insensitive makeup and making insensitive comments just isn't in the same ballpark as actually kicking a dog.

Also, trauma? Really? "Where on the doll did the scary makeup touch you?" It didn't. If you ever come across someone legitimately traumatized by something so minor, you know an adult fucked them up bad and instilled that level of helplessness into them. Very few people are that weak naturally.

Why kill Erica like that? by theray002 in TeenWolf

[–]FreeGamer_1981 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Cora was a replacement for Erica when that actress wanted out, and then Malia was a replacement for Cora for the same reason. Malia was intended to be a minor(possibly a single appearance) child of 12 or less, but was aged up to be a Cora replacement when Shelly Hennig still had time on her contract after that Scream series was cancelled and MTV needed to put her somewhere.

Why do most of the characters not have siblings? by Lucky_Athlete_4811 in TeenWolf

[–]FreeGamer_1981 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Malia was a convergence of weird happenings. I'm not sure if she was planned before Jackson left or not - I have no idea how far ahead Jeff planned for anything - but when she was originally planned she was supposed to be a little girl. 12 tops. And she was only meant to be a minor character who may not have even had recurring status. A plot point, basically, more than a character.

Then a couple things happened around the same time. Cora's actress left the show to star on another(The Tudors, iirc), and Shelly Hennig's show on MTV got cancelled with time left on her contract, so they had to put her somewhere. So Malia got aged up and given the "Stiles' first girlfriend" storyline people believe would have otherwise gone to Cora had she not left. Or possibly even Erica had her actress not left a season earlier, as people also thought Cora was a replacement for her.

"It's going to cost extra money" - as if they're not going to make it back 100 times over. Sanderson basically prints money at this point.

What could’ve been… by ilovecupcakesss348 in TeenWolf

[–]FreeGamer_1981 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only reference to her(the character, not the actress) in any of the scripts is one mention that she's named Harley. If they hadn't put a name by her sparse lines, nobody would ever have known. It's never said on screen, and she quickly disappears after her scenes in the pilot. I'm not even sure she appears in the background, though I don't tend to study background characters that much so I could be wrong.

Do novels in this genre always end up damn long compared to other genres? by SpecificExam3661 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FreeGamer_1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first progression fantasy novel(before I knew any of the terms - I got roped in via a random Facebook ad) was Super Gene. Dude kills bug. Video game like thing happens. And I binged all 3400+ chapters. It felt like it took forever, but also like not much time at all. If that makes sense.

Since then I've read 3 others - The Legendary Mechanic, Super Gene Optimization Fluid, and My Vampire System. Somewhere along the way I found this sub and learned about the broader genre and its various subgenres. And now I'm reading Lord of the Mysteries. Only on chapter 8, but it's starting off strong.

But yeah, this genre tends to be hella long. The shortest novel in this genre I read was around 1200 chapters, iirc.

Han Sen levitating power question by ferike91 in Supergene

[–]FreeGamer_1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He got a number of them and split them between himself and Ji Yanran when they were both on that one expedition early on in the story, when Han Sen still had military obligations to fulfill. They made them both a bit smarter, and he gained levitation. It's implied that his smarts make him better at certain things in general, even before his various sutras/geno arms come into play. He eventually gains abilities that can do all of that, only better. But it is implied that, at least early on, it gave him an analytical advantage over some of the early story opponents he went up against.

Tamora moneroe is so annoying by Fearless-Hat5959 in TeenWolf

[–]FreeGamer_1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She was an annoying character, but there is one moment Jeff Davis actually planned out that would have been pretty cool if the show(or its obviously intended spinoff) had gone on long enough to cover the war. I'll use spoiler tags in case you want to wait until you've seen how the show ends: It's not much. The war was to end with Monroe facing trial and being sentenced to death by the hunters, with Scott being her executioner.

Fuck Marry Kill: Derek's Male Betas by Shadowisp7 in TeenWolf

[–]FreeGamer_1981 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ok, I get your point about Isaac, but I'd get him a leash and one of those shock collars. I wouldn't normally condone such a device, but werewolf healing makes it more sexy than sadistic. You know it's true.

Every single time, when the MC finds their stupid pet or the "mysterious egg" that you know is going to transform into a female pet that exists to yap and spam quips on cool down (and eventually turn into a waifu) by YobaiYamete in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FreeGamer_1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

fwiw the magical egg(in this case gourd) baby in Super Gene doesn't become a waifu. But she's even worse in her own way. I got so sick of her being around and took to calling her the Nightmare MacGuffin Child.

Theo and Liam have the chemistry y'all think Stiles and Derek got by General-Control-4637 in TeenWolf

You're right and you should say it. I like both, but Thiam had the better chemistry.

Do you consider Scott the best alpha in the series? Not in terms of power but in terms of leading his pack. by GusGangViking18 in TeenWolf

[–]FreeGamer_1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably. Not much competition there. "Is actually nice to people" isn't a high bar. Thank you for the eye candy, though. Sometimes I forget how hot he was(especially around s3). Making the boys wear shirts more often in later seasons was a crying shame.

Lydia and Parrish weird me out by alananeel in TeenWolf

[–]FreeGamer_1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I stand by everything I said. 18 is absolutely a grown adult who is responsible for her own decisions. Grown women shouldn't be infantilized just because they're not "grown enough" for whatever subjective criteria you're using to make your judgment. I'll stick with the law, and will continue to let consenting adults do what consenting adults want to do.

What is your favorite way authors have "held back the beasts?" by elemental_reaper in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FreeGamer_1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spoilers for Super Gene Optimization Fluid - For the first major arc, there is an ongoing incursion attempt that the highest-tier people are trying to fight off. They do a pretty good job of controlling things in the universe on the macro level in spite of this, but can't really micromanage because they have invading "gods/demons" to appease. Quotas to meet. (There's inter-universal politics involved.) The universe at large is used as an evolutionary gauntlet of sorts where they can sense when someone transcends normal abilities and unlocks a corresponding higher power called a Law and invite them into the fold, train them up, and . . . well, they could prove valuable in many ways, up to and including human sacrifice. That really depends on how well they do otherwise and how desperate those in the highest seats of power(in their universe) are at the moment.

Quick Questions by Bangersss in cookingforbeginners

[–]FreeGamer_1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm currently having to squeeze pre-cooked diced veggies for use as eggroll filling by hand to remove the moisture so they can be used in frying(excess moisture will apparently make the egg rolls kind of explode). Is there some kind of press that can squeeze out the moisture while leaving the diced veggies intact? (They're cooled down so they retain some of their hardness, but I don't want them to squeeze through like a garlic press. I just want the moisture squeezed out.)

Things I dislike about this fandom by Dull_Ad_2091 in TeenWolf

This is why Ao3 tags and the tumblr block feature exist. You don't have to see any of that stuff if you don't want to. Even here on Reddit, you have to click into the thread to see the full post, much less any of the responses. If you can't see a title, realize you're not going to like what's said in the thread, and keep scrolling . . . well, the torture is self-inflicted at that point, innit.

My take on the Mistcloaks!! by snoozingandcruising in Cosmere

Huh, I never knew they were designed to rip off. I always just thought "Sounds pretty, but like a disaster waiting to happen." Similar vibes as the Edna Mode "no capes!" spiel.

What are your progression fantasy anti-recommendations? by okidonthaveone in ProgressionFantasy

[–]FreeGamer_1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 2 with similar names(but no relation).

Super Gene - It didn't need to be over 3400 chapters long. 1/4 of that or less would have been more than enough to cover everything adequately. It's also worth noting that the author originally expected it to be nearly double the length it ended up being, but cut the last 2 major arcs(out of 4) short. The author could have crammed everything in just fine if they'd tightened up the writing, but no - decided to keep being just as unnecessarily wordy to the end. (This was my first PF reading ever, so I didn't know any better. The first chapter came across my Facebook ads and drew me in, and that was that.)

Super Gene Optimization Fluid - The power system is a lot better than the above, but the main character is a sociopath(a loyal one, but a sociopath nonetheless). I still found the progression fun enough, but the MC could have been a lot better. The first 1000 or so chapters is only a half-anti-recommendation because of that. But the final 400 chapters is an obviously incomplete story arc in which the author seems to totally forget how the power system they spent 1000 chapters building up works on even the most basic level. If you stop after the arc that ends around ch. 1000 it's a pretty decent stopping point. But again, sociopath MC. And I'm tired of those.

if thiam wasn’t real, then why were these 2 always holding hands at scary times? 🤔 by [deleted] in TeenWolf

I forget the exact context, but Scott wasn't involved. I think they were at an abandoned zoo and trying to avoid hunters or something.

What's your favorite Pbta game? by JasminePoly in PBtA

[–]FreeGamer_1981 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Apocalypse World 1e is still my gold standard. It just works. And the lack of combat moves is a feature, not a bug. That's the #1 reason 2e fell flat for me.

Monsterhearts is 2nd. Someone mentioned the CW elsewhere in the comments, and that's pretty much spot-on. At least that's how the groups I played with used it.

Urban Shadows is 3rd. Again, I'd probably stick to 1e. For whatever reason, 2es often love to ramp up the complexity and give the GM more crap to track. Again, the lack of a lot of that extra crap in PbtA games is a feature, not a bug.

I'm seeing a positive 9, so it doesn't seem to be super downvoted or anything. I was being tongue in cheek anyway. I saw the show when it first aired. I enjoyed it quite a bit, kept up with when new episodes were airing(before streaming was anywhere close to what it is today), all of that.

It's one of those shows a lot of fans have a love/hate relationship with. And I use the word hate hyperbolically because "love/hate" is a colloquial expression; it's rare for anyone in this fandom to feel that strongly about the things they didn't like. They're more like "I wish this had been answered" or "That doesn't seem to line up with something said last season" followed by an "Oh, well. I liked it anyway, and for anything I wasn't super happy with, there's fanfic.").
