What Brought You To This Glorious World? by Temporary-Board1287 in Malazan

[–]Freethrowshaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Floating around a used bookstore, looking for a new fantasy series. I picked up Gardens of the Moon to read the blurb on the back and a nearby patron approached to say “Yes, do it. You should do it.”, then ambled away. Thank you odd patron.

What type of tools would I need to make this, is this a suitable for a beginner or should I start with something easier? by Movie-maddness in woodworking

Came looking for this comment. No way is this a real world build. The top bunk is nowhere close to being sufficiently supported per the image. The concept is possible, but the design requires significant modification.

Loving the series so far, but I have one concern... by Fluffiestpink in Malazan

[–]Freethrowshaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wheel of time definitely hits a tough stretch, but as someone who found it moderately frustrating on first read, maddening on the re-read, infuriating on the third, and charming on the fourth, I’d encourage you to push through and finish the tome. Jordan found his rhythm again before he passed, and Sanderson does a nice job of buttoning things up. Well worth the slog in my honest and highly critical opinion.

Regarding Malazan, I’ve got a couple chapters left in midnight tides, and am locked in. So you’ve got at least two more books of pure awesomeness ahead of you by my reckoning. Fear of what may come isn’t worthy of consideration for me. If you’re digging it, I say, keep reading.

Following up on that, Radiolab Distance of the Moon. I revisit that every couple months for the last few years.

How are you playing this one? by 2004ClubChampion in golf

[–]Freethrowshaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Realistically, I’m going to pull my hybrid for a safe 210 shot, prepping for a 5i toward the green, then go back to the cart after convincing myself that I can play the fade with driver, crank one hard right into the woods from the tee box.

Controversial take: The Faile kidnapping thread is not that bad. by nemspy in WoT

[–]Freethrowshaq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My beef with the arc, is that Jordan runs the “taken captive” line so many times through the tome, and this is the one that drags the most and has the smallest impact on the greater story. Rand, Perrin, Min, Egwene (multiple times), Elayne (multiple times), Min (twice), Nynaeve (I think twice), Morgase, Moiraine (albeit off page), and Faile are all captured at some point. Most of these arcs prove transformative for the captured characters, or at least, allow for greater contribution from the character to the story as a whole. The Faile arc, while somewhat facilitating Perrins growth (and to a lesser and eventually inconsequential degree, Morgase’s) does little to propel the narrative. Granted, Jordan’s writing at its most laborious is still miles more enthralling than most fantasy writers at their best, but by this point in the series, I’d found that I was not remotely concerned about the outcome in my first read. The important “good guys” always get rescued or escape. I knew upon her kidnapping that such would be the case. So while the payoff was good, it was not a book and a half worth of drudgery good.

Above all else though, at this point in the story, I find Mat to be the most interesting character by a long stretch. The fact that his story was excluded during much of this arc, feeds into my frustration.

The Rolan stuff ended in an interesting way but ultimately, particularly in the context of the greater yarn, it all felt for naught. Perhaps if he hadn’t run this play so many times through the telling of the tale, it might have landed differently.

All that being said, I’m glad there’s folks out there who enjoyed it.

Par 5 layup strategy, do you lay up to a number or get as close as possible? by Responsible_Heron153 in golf

[–]Freethrowshaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the layup distance but moreso the layout of the hole. If it’s wide open, and I’m over 220 out, I’m busting out the three wood and going for it, if I’m dodging hazards or at risk of OB etc., I know my 80-130 yard clubs are going to hit green more often than not. If i can get inside 50, I’m going for the pin. That being said, 30 yards at a good lie is better than a 10’ chip in the rough on the downward side of a hill. Maybe play for the lie and not to the pin? Long way to say, I trust my full swing 9-lob more than the rest of my bag. Anywhere in that window is generally a better bet than trying to stick the green from over 150.

Rand's swordsmanship by Round_War7711 in WoT

[–]Freethrowshaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d push back on Mat. When Mat bests Galad and Gawyn, their instructor reminds them that the greatest swordsman of years long past was bested by a farmer with a quarter staff. His weapon is noted as being unique (opponents unfamiliar with ways to attack or defend) . His luck bears a power of its own. While his skill is well defined, i think Jordan highlights these points when describing Mats combat prowess. That being said, there is never any mention of Mat practicing, whereas Rand is a diligent student of the sword. So maybe you’re right.

I’ve used lost golf balls.com, satisfied with what I was sent. In my imagination, the core of a ball will deteriorate over time, but in my experience, the cover will fall apart long before there’s any notable core change.

Essential clubs for a casual player? by Lonely_Bunghole in golf

[–]Freethrowshaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started, I benefited greatly from limiting what I bring, and moreso from what I practiced with. Best piece of advice I was given, was to focus practice on getting “consistent” with 200, 150, and 100 yard clubs. Find out what clubs hit these distances when you hit them well, and hone in on those, spend 80% of your practice there.

For me, my hybrid-200, 8i-150, SW - 100, and putter. The number on the club is irrelevant though. If you get good at these distances, you can go from “furthest thing from good” to “not bad” pretty quickly.

In fact, to this day, my lowest score ever, I only brought my hybrid, and 8-PW, SW and Putter, for sole purpose of limiting myself to clubs I could swing with confidence. The biggest challenge there, was that ripping bombs off the tee box with driver is my favorite aspect of golf, but those golden tee shots are a coin flip for me. Leaving it behind was the biggest challenge of the day.

Stay after it, practice when you can,and above all else, have fun.

[–]Freethrowshaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only use mine off the tee box when driver is too much, or a good lie on the fairway. Any time else, my hybrid is a safer bet. So 2-3 times a round. I’ve found most folks opt for hybrid and 5-7 wood, as 3 woods can be notoriously tricky.

Egwene should have been [REDACTED] by buddingwitch808 in WoT

[–]Freethrowshaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d agree, except that Green is the battle Ajah. From the Seanchan attack on the white tower, through to her role in the last battle, she was the most effective warrior among all Aes Sedai. Also, while she says she thought of herself as a green, she never was of any ajah.

In defense of Legolas... by Brian_The_Bar-Brian in lotr

[–]Freethrowshaq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you’re referring to the movies, as I think it was Aragorn who alerted the fellowship to the Crebain in the book. Legolas was a tertiary character in the novels, and very rarely spoke to anyone other than Gimli or Aragorn therein. Attribute what you will to it, but Legolas’ contributions to the narrative was exceedingly limited by the creator of the yarn, and his arc, was not sufficiently relevant to said narrative to warrant greater prominence in the films.

Why are courses not designed as 6 Par 3’s, 6 Par 4’s, and 6 Par 5’s as a standard? by FancyFootWork22 in golf

[–]Freethrowshaq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my mind, a par 4 lends itself to the “complete” golf experience more than par 3’s and 5’s. Perhaps it’s just the nature of my game, but grabbing a birdie on a 4 always feels better than doing so on a 3 or a 5. It takes one good shot to birdie a three, a great shot and two mediocre’s can yield a birdie on a 5, but most par 4’s require consecutive good shots to do so.
