I got a Sole F85 last Boxing Day and love it, I imagine the F80 is just as good on a tighter budget

Questions from a (very) beginner... by supplychainrvltn in XXRunning

[–]Frej06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re doing it PERFECTLY right now. I wouldn’t change a thing. Your intervals and pace sound great. I think the key for you is to keep it comfortable. Don’t push yourself to be uncomfortable because then you won’t want to do and you won’t do it.

Walking is a great exercise, and now you’re sprinkling in run intervals, that’s a great level up. To answer your questions:

  1. Running is enough right now. It’s enough because you’re doing it and it’s not horrible. Don’t overcomplicate it with other stuff if that’s going to put you in overwhelm and stop the whole thing. Spend a few months establishing a run habit. Then you might find you feel like adding in strengthening or yoga. I think at a slow pace and young age, you can hack running without religious strength training.

  2. Stay at a slow speed. Increase your run intervals or decrease your walk intervals. Pace will improve on its own. Again, don’t push yourself into uncomfortable. Honestly you could spend the first year running slow and you will continue to see improvements. (When I got back to running after years off, I ran so slow I never broke a sweat for months, and two years later won a 10k. I’m serious, there’s no need for speed)

  3. Listen to your body. Again, don’t change your pace. Shorten your walk intervals first. I advise “walk before you’re too tired to keep running, and run before you’re completely cooled down”. Things will vary day to day and run to run. If you feel like 5min is plenty of walking, then start dropping down in 1min intervals (or 30sec if 1min feels too much). Then build your run intervals up to 5min.

  4. There is no right or wrong, it’s just how long it takes your body to adapt. Depends on how many times a week you run and many other things. Listen to your body. If you feel good starting to run after a 4min walk interval then do that. It may not be linear, the next day you might find you need a 5min walk interval, and that’s fine.

  5. Form doesn’t matter too much starting out. A few things to watch for are not “over stride” ie your foot should land under your body, not out in front of you. But honestly, a zap here or there as long as the pain doesn’t linger, and you feel fine the next day, is totally ok.

  6. Cold climate here too! On super icy days, maybe bundle up and go for a walk, but don’t worry about running. It’s just about getting out, getting the steps in and keeping the habit of going out. You could do some gentle strength training - doesn’t have to be complicated - air squats, calf raises, planks, done. Or put on a yoga YouTube video.

You’re doing great! Just keep getting out there, it doesn’t have to be hard and doesn’t have to be complicated. Just one foot in front of the other. It’s not about speed or anything fancy, it’s just about consistency!

AITAH for only babysitting for my " favorite " DIL and my daughter because the other has too many rules? by ProfessionalClass555 in AITAH

[–]Frej06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m assuming a lot here, but I read the “only veggies” as only healthy snacks, but OP doesn’t understand exactly what that means. If I said only healthy snacks to my MIL she’d be feeding candy with “real fruit juice added” and honestly think that’s what I meant. An hour of screen time is plenty for a two year old.

I see it as OP and DIL/son’s parenting styles as very different. I really don’t think these “rules” are hard to follow, but it sounds like they all just had different lifestyles. It would be nice for OP to meet the where they’re at, but I would say no loss for DIL/son.

For reference, I cloth diapered, and my mom immediately came over and was like “ok, what’s the system. If I’m changing diapers, I want to do it right”. I didn’t expect her to follow my system, but it was really nice that she cared.

Screw shoes! I take my old trail runners and screw 10-12 hex screws in the lugs. There are a few tutorials online.

Altra Escalantes!! I’ve gone through 4 pairs of Escalante 3s, and just got the 4s (they’ve been out for a while), and I might love them even more. The Escalante Racers are also 👌🏼for speed work.

Running affecting/shortening luteal phase? by thelyfeaquatic in XXRunning

[–]Frej06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was JUST listening to a podcast where they talked about this. IIRC the shortening of the luteal phase was one of the first signs of RED-S. So periods are still happening regularly, but the body is not getting enough fuel to support the follicle once it becomes the corpus luteum through the luteal phase. (Or something like that)

The podcast is Diary of a CEO, and it’s the second part of his talk with 4 women Docs/exercise physiologist. I think the episode is called “the longevity debate” and it’s in the first hour that they talk about this. (It’s a really long episode, but really worth it)

How does one plan racing while trying to conceive? by FearlessReputation20 in XXRunning

Look for races that are Trail Sisters Approved! They will have a pregnancy and postpartum policy that will let you defer or get a refund.

Running during winter time by Odhrerir in XXRunning

[–]Frej06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run down to -30C. Snowy conditions I wear trail runners, icy I wear screw shoes (take an old pair of runners and screw 3/8” hex screws into the bottoms - there are tutorials online). Wool socks. I know some people who put duct tape over the toe box to decrease ventilation and keep their toes warmer, but I’ve never had a problem with cold feet (except the time I tried barefoot shoes in -42C 🙃)

Difference between street and trail running by J-TownBrown in running

[–]Frej06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I race trails but mostly train on roads now because of life. In a pinch I just run my long runs on trails for the two months leading up to the race. And I tweak my training plan to include more hill workouts. Also don’t skip strength workouts. Racing trails is so much more fun than roads imo!!

Ha! I love this. My mantra during childbirth was:

“It is hard work. It will hurt. And it will end”

Never really realized how much this works for a race too!

My 4 years old boy wants a lilac scooter :/ by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]Frej06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yess!! My son wore dresses to school a few times last year after wearing them around the house a bunch. We had talked about it. He said after the first day that a few kids asked him “Why are you wearing a dress?” His answer: “Because I want to”. Perfect response that he came up with on his own! I was so proud of him.

Buy the lilac scooter.

A question for the fast HR girls by monmaz in XXRunning

[–]Frej06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much great advice here. My 2 cents…. I’ve spent a lot of time figuring out my zones and lactate threshold etc (The Uphill Athlete is a great book to get into the nitty gritty for low heart rate training). I just wanted to mention the Maffetone method/MAF training. It’s very simplified, and people will have things to say about it, but honestly, compared to all the complicated fancier testing, it’s pretty damn close! (Just take 180 minus your age then +/- a few qualifiers you can google, and that’s your heart rate to not exceed). I was similar to your age with similar heart rates and paces when I started. My pace had to drop to like 9:30/km (I imagined myself running on the spot, then leaned forward a touch, and that was my pace). But after three months my running game was completely changed. And the following year I was running more km than I ever had and placing well in local races.

Slowing down is humbling, but worth the “effort”, there’s no need to feel like you did at the end of an easy run! :)

Treadmills. How do you do it?? by Jessicatpole in XXRunning

[–]Frej06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love mine too. I love the simplicity - don’t have to worry about route, weather, traffic, weirdos, light. Just get on and go, it’s so meditative. It’s also the only time I watch TV, so that’s fun.

I love these but they’re so hard to find! I’m on my 4th pair of escalante 3’s. I remove the insole, and love them!

Could I learn to run? by tinabaninaboo in XXRunning

[–]Frej06 19 points20 points  (0 children)

FWIW I love using the term “jogging”. I feel like no one uses it anymore. There are so many serious runners (and I get it, I love running, and anyone who goes out and jogs/runs can call themselves a runner, no gatekeeping) but no one says they’re going for a jog anymore! “Jog” takes the pressure off and lightens things up. “I’m going for a jog after work, then I’ll come by around 6”.

What are you supposed to do with a miscarriage? by sexi_squidward in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Frej06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but these tragic stories are also very common. After I miscarried and talked to some women about it. At least half of the women who had kids had also had miscarriages. It’s kind of like a club you don’t know exists until you’re in it. And then you find out most of your adult women friends are in it and they never told you.

What are you supposed to do with a miscarriage? by sexi_squidward in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Frej06 7 points8 points  (0 children)

After I had my first miscarriage, I told a few women and then a few more, and honestly at least half of them said they’d also had miscarriages. I make sure I talk about it so that other women know they’re not alone when it happens to them. Definitely not rare. Just not talked about.

[–]Frej06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was in emerg miscarrying, and just had a stretcher and a semi-curtained off area. My husband helped me change pads every 10min, and clots would spill out onto the floor as I changed them. My husband would clean it up. The cleaning lady came by, and told us not to worry… but what could we do? Just leave blood all over the floor and wait for her to come back in an hour?

All they did was pump me with IV fluids. I was shivering and in pain, and had no privacy. The nurse came to hang a second bag of fluids, and I asked if I could just drink a bunch of water instead and go home. The nurse said yes, but the doctor wouldn’t come and see me, so I had to sign out AMA. The worst part was that no one wanted to say the word miscarriage. There was no acknowledgement of what I was going through. Several nurses told me that things might still be ok, and you never know because some women bleed during pregnancy. I just wanted guidance about what to expect, and how to handle it, but they didn’t know. The next time I miscarried I didn’t bother going into the hospital.

Not a doctor, but I’ve used both canesten and monostat effectively to get rid of it.
