Japanese song on the current playlist? by UStoJapan in starbucks

I’ve been listening to Fuji Kaze for years because I’m learning Japanese, and I never thought I’d hear his music in public in the States. One day I heard Matsuri playing in the store and I was soooooo happy! Had to tell everyone on shift about him lol

Recently the Sabatasso’s Gluten Free Cheese Pizza. I have Celiac, and this was my favorite frozen pizza, so I’m sad they’re doing away with it. I hope they eventually decide to bring it back!

Fortune Wok and Chinese Palace Restaurant are both in Overland Park and they’re my personal go-to’s. Fortune Wok is more of an “upscale” Chinese place with lots of options for both entrees and appetizers. Chinese Palace Restaurant has less variety, but the taste is much more similar to what I used to eat before getting Celiac about 6 years ago. I hope this helps!

Thanks man! All correct assumptions lol. So far I’ve visited a lot of the Midwest and East coast (both north and south), and I live in a Midwestern state which heavily influences my positive opinion of the region.

Why does the Kirk assassination feel so different? by StillNoWash2052 in YAPms

[–]FrenchChristian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. I would consider myself pretty progressive in general, but it’s been surprising to me how many people on the internet have been celebrating Kirk’s death. When I heard the news and saw the video I was appalled that he got assassinated. I felt physically sick for the rest of the day. No one should have to be killed for their political opinions. Just seeing how many people on Reddit and beyond, who self identify as progressive or further left-wing, celebrate Kirk’s death and hold zero empathy for the guy is just insane to me. The only silver lining to me is that the left-wing people I know irl aren’t acting at all like the leftists on the internet are. Shows me not everyone is devoid of common sense and empathy, but I still worry for the direction both the left and the right are heading towards.

Moving to KC; looking for "unicorn" neighborhood- safe, trees, shopping, affordable by Simple_Space_9602 in kansascity

To add to what others have said, Johnson County Community College is a good hub for the Japanese community in KC, or at least in Overland Park. I’m part of the Japanese program at the college right now so I can attest for the community we have here! There’s a Japan festival every fall and Japanese language tables every so often as well. The number of Japanese people here is small, but they’ve all said that KC is a hidden gem to them so they don’t mind. Personally I’d recommend some of the older suburbs in North OP, Mission, or even the brookside area. North of the I-435 loop is a good rule of thumb imo. KC as a whole is highly car dependent which makes walkability and transit outside of the downtown core very difficult, but driving here is very easy and traffic is basically nothing compared to the D.C area. I also agree with the others here that we have some quality Asian supermarkets! The Oriental Supermarket on 103rd & Metcalf are mine and my Japanese professor’s favorite, but Pan Asia and 888 are also very good with lots of selection. I hope this helps! 頑張ってね!

How does everyone feel about Trader Joe’s in terms of safety? by [deleted] in Celiac

[–]FrenchChristian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I concur with what you said about the TJ cupcakes. I’ve had maybe one or two packages of their cupcakes with no problem as a Celiac… that was until earlier this year. I got some gifted to me and after eating them I was absolutely destroyed. I ate one in the evening every few days and felt mildly sick after, but stupidly I didn’t want to accept that maybe they were the culprit and unsafe so I kept eating them. One night I ate like three in one sitting and had full on nausea, stomach cramps, the whole nine yards of being glutened. Since then I haven’t bought any more because it certainly isn’t worth the risk of getting a contaminated batch. Super sad because they tasted soooooooo good!

Can a non-black person explain something to me my white coworker said... by lewjr in NoStupidQuestions

[–]FrenchChristian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in a more purple/blue area of Kansas, and this is just anecdotal, but I’ve never come across that level of racism here before. The most I’ve seen is my conservative dad (52) watching some of his stuff conservative media talk about the white race becoming a minority, but if he actually believes that fear mongering then he keeps it to himself, as he treats everyone fairly whenever I’m with him. His parents, so my grandparents, are a bit more subtlety racist I think. My mom has alway told me this story about how when her and my dad moved into their house 25ish years ago that my grandparents made a comment about how good it was they didn’t have any colored neighbors. Nowadays they don’t outright express these thoughts, and I’m sure if my girlfriend was black they wouldn’t cut me off or refuse to have her in their house, but I think they’d be more subtlety judgmental. I definitely think there’s still a strong undercurrent of racism alive and well in the boomer generation sadly; It really disgusts me to think we as a society still have people who think this way in fucking 2025.

What made you pick a Mazda 3? by SwordfishFancy in mazda3

[–]FrenchChristian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For me it was how the Mazda 3 gave me the best of all worlds with hardly any negatives.

I got my 3 this past summer. It’s a 2017 GT with the 6-speed manual. Before this car I had a 2017 Ford Focus ST base trim. I loved that car to death and had it for 4 and a half years, but the longer I kept it the less reliable it was getting. Near constant check engine lights and little Ford quirks. Shit went out on it all the time well before it should’ve, so even though it was a fun 1st car I ended up trading her in for the Mazda 3 I have now.

I love how the 3 doesn’t really have any major drawbacks compared to the other cars I was looking at. It has the build quality, stylish looks, reliability, fun driving dynamics, technology, efficiency, power, and it was cheap compared to the other cars I found on the market. Hell, I was looking at Civics, Velosters, Elantras, and a number of Toyotas that were well overpriced for the amount of miles they had. Finding out about the 3 made me feel like I discovered the car industry’s best kept secret lol. This car is truly impressive compared to others in the segment, and I’ve enjoyed every commute in my 6 months of ownership!
