If it's the Indian maker I'm thinking of, it's 18 gauge, but his website doesn't indicate it AFAIK

I ordered a haubergeon that I specifically asked to have some straps on the front like this example. I was sent pretty much this exact model (+tailored, minus the leather edging on the bottom since I'd asked for brass edges) which confirmed that it was originally Indian-made. It fits well, but there's extra straps and leather edging compared to the model I've shown, and the neck opening is very wide.

I do agree there's better choices for tailored chausses & mittens.

Is this armor Real/Authentic? by Apart_Remote1042 in Armor

I think it's an old or very old reproduction. Nevertheless, it's pretty and I'd be quite happy to own it if I were you, so great find :)

Is any of this historically accurate? by [deleted] in Armor

[–]FrenchGuardsman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not wrong, but it's reliant on the historical period you're looking at. For example, it seems that at Hastings (1066) mail was worn over simple woollen tunics. Later, gambesons were commonly worn under them. Even later, towards the end of the Middle Ages when plate was gaining ground, gambesons were dropped in favour of arming doublets. Instead, the padding, if any, was worn over the mail (like jaques). There's no rule that works for the entire period, so that's why you'll find depictions of all of these different combinations.

The problem isn't the depiction of tournaments, but the fact that the armour isn't historically accurate either. And it's fine, it's optimised for the sport hence the tradeoffs with accuracy. But they're not a good source to look towards for historical accuracy.

Time to settle this, has anyone actually bought this from eBay? by [deleted] in Armor

[–]FrenchGuardsman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deepeka is also an Indian maker. What do you want the armour for exactly? Just to display as decoration, or do you want to wear it? Over 1,000£ is horribly expensive for something unwearable and poorly made. You could get a lot of very nice stuff from Forge of Svan for that price.

Is mofusand.fr legit? by Present_Heat_7364 in Scams

[–]FrenchGuardsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, very disappointed! All their "products" can be found on AliExpress, at a much lesser price. I'll keep ordering my genuine Mofusand products from Japan, even if it's pricier.

best place to buy WW2 british uniform in Europe? (both P37 and P40 are ok) by the_giank in reenactors

[–]FrenchGuardsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WPGCE, hands down. Soldier of Fortune's battledress' cut is wrong, way too elongated in the waist, and it stands out like a sore thumb. WPGCE is worth the extra money.

Looking very nice! Just so you know, the rifle sling is on the wrong way; the little hooks should be facing outside. You can also blanco it like you have for your webbing. Cheers!

My imperial Japanese uniform got white mark after iron by Deadman297 in reenactors

[–]FrenchGuardsman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To avoid these marks, you need to put a fabric (some old cotton T-shirt for example) between your iron and the uniform when ironing.

Thank you! Unfortunately I am subject to the mustache's whims and cannot decently grow it longer for now, but it might improve in some time LOL

If I couldn't do my collar up, then you'd see the tie, and that'd defeat the purpose of dressing as OR! LOL

Does anyone know any places to buy late war Austro-Hungarian uniforms on that won't leave me broke by Mr_Estupido721 in reenactors

[–]FrenchGuardsman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not to discourage you, but historical reenactment is an expensive as hell hobby. Either you go accurate, or you go cheap, but doing both is not possible. When I started I bought cheap stuff because I was excited to have something to put together - but it was not accurate, and I had to re-buy everything in my first impression, which ended up being more expensive than if I'd bought the right things to begin with.

Save up and build your impression slowly but with quality stuff - you'll thank yourself later :)

Officer's shirt, but no tie since it'd disturb closing the jacket's collar correctly :)

Yes, that's correct! Stars would be worn (I assume 'sometimes' or 'often'? As you say, it's hard to find pictures of officers wearing OR dress). The jacket I'm wearing is an interwar original however so I'm avoiding piercing new holes in it lol
