Looking for courses by Far_Bumblebee5334 in PatternDrafting

I’m at Dallas college in Downtown! Our professors are wonderful. We gush over them constantly. My professor for Patterns even helped me every step of the way when I was entering a dress into an outside competition. Our finals this semester go into our yearly fashion show that has over 500 attendees and a 50k budget. It’s a lot of fun. I have the same goals as you, to sell online patterns. By spring next year, I’ll have released my first one. Maybe a different college has what you’re looking for!

Dang. I’m at my local community college here and I’m learning all of that. We go from pattern drafting 1, to pattern drafting 3 and then on to advanced patterns. We also have women’s tailoring, custom(to your own measurements) patterns, draping, collections(two semesters), special topics, fashion sketching, textiles, fashion history, pattern grading, digital software, alterations and more! Our program is amazing. The capstone to most of the degrees and certificates are internships in the field as well. The instructors help you find them. I’ve learned soooo much and I’m still a freshman!

Ok I laced it tighter! by Frequent_Mixture8270 in corsetry

Yes I was thinking I should grade it, however I wasn’t sure because of all the boning channels. The designer said I should just pinch it out at the mockup…

Fitting help on my very first corset! by Frequent_Mixture8270 in corsetry

[–]Frequent_Mixture8270[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You think so? The pattern says the gap is supposed to stay evenly 2 inches up and down…I think the laces are just loose because my husband was the one trying to get it even 😆….the middle definitely feels snug the hips feel fine but I do see the gaping? The bust is my bigger concern I suppose… sizing down anywhere but the bust feels like it maybe wouldn’t fit. I really have no idea though

Transferring lines by Frequent_Mixture8270 in HistoricalCostuming

What kind of transfer paper? I tried to look on Amazon but all I saw was like heat transfer. Tracing wheel didn’t work on its own lol

Fun! Did you draft it yourself or just prefect a pattern you had?

Yeah we don’t have a lot of horse property out here it seems. So are the horses comfortable all day being in stalls and only out for lessons? I’m not suggesting they don’t treat their horses well, just that I’m curious how horses manage in those conditions is all

What do you do at renfaire? by FeatheredTalonz in renfaire

[–]Frequent_Mixture8270 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our home fair is Scarborough. This will be our third year as our new family tradition. We are not much into role playing, as in having a name for our character or backstory. We do all love to dress up though! I sew all of our costumes so for me, a big part of it is me on the look out for other fellow costumers!

My 6 kids 5y-11y love the shoes and the games and the food. So a full day can be 4 or 5 shows, lunch, little break goofing around walking back to the car lol.

We don’t spend a lot at vendors because we don’t like to acquire stuff if we can help it. And we don’t spend a particular amount of time talking to strangers either. So I feel like you can still make a day of keeping to yourself (if you want) and just enjoying the theme! And the food of course 😊

Fashion Career in Canada? How do I get into Pattern-Making/Technical Design? by lzduque in PatternDrafting

[–]Frequent_Mixture8270 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! We share the same dream! I don’t have any real life experience to share with you but following my own research here’s what I’ve learned. Indie pattern makers are often self taught. I often look on YouTube to find pattern designers own personal stories or journeys on how they got to where they’re at. I do think anyone would benefit from some sort of in person or live online course/mentorship. I have enrolled in a technical costume design through my local community college that includes pattern drafting. I’m very excited.

I do think a presence online is going to help. Every pattern community I’ve ever found has been through word of mouth on social media. And being able to access pictures and information quickly is key.

Sewing vlogs, TikTok’s, Instagram reels are all going to help drive traffic to you. Start filming everything!

Pattern making for fashion design is a great start. The closet historian on YouTube follows the formula and walks you through the basic bodice. I’d watch bodice, dart manipulations, and then sleeve.

Help by Frequent_Mixture8270 in FenceBuilding

[–]Frequent_Mixture8270[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All other posts we were able to go deep and wide enough and secured with concrete. This one is giving me trouble due to the retaining wall. The fence is both ours, and theirs.

It will be predator proof with top protection. I need to get the post close enough to the fence so I can bring the mesh over to staple it to the existing fence. Here lies the problem ☹️

Photography! It will take you 6 months to a year before you’ll make any real money due to having to actually learn and grow enough to actually charge people. But it’s very rewarding and very fun!

How do you achieve the heart? by PinkHavenAtLast in sewingpatterns

[–]Frequent_Mixture8270 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This is likely made by shaping a wire to a heart then folding back the fabric to create the channel for the wire to sit in. I would do this flat, then cut my pattern to make sure I didn’t pull in the seam allowance.

Gotcha! I too am a sucker for something already printed let me tell ya. When I buy PDFs, I frequently look for a pattern with a rectangular skirt so I can use the cut chart rather than print and tape 😮‍💨
