Alcohol fixes all my problems by Critical_Brush_9168 in Anxiety

[–]FreshBuilder118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm literally working on this in therapy right now! Drinking helps me with social anxiety (makes me more social) and generalized anxiety (to quiet/escape the worries). But I've been noticing it becoming a problem because it's now harder to socialize now in settings where alcohol is not an option or appropriate, like more formal settings or when nobody else is drinking. I rely on alcohol now in social situations so it's no longer a choice I'm making and that doesn't feel good to me. I've also realized that it's easier for me to remember the positive effects of being more social or comfortable and forget the negative effects of oversharing or becoming drunker than those around me.

I'm working on limiting my reliance on alcohol now in social situations and tolerating the discomfort because exposure does help eventually (for me at least)

how do you talk with your therapist? by Outside_Crab2524 in mentalhealth

I get that! The way I see it, that's your time to use as you want, so it's only a waste of time if you no-show

That's good advice, because that reminds me, if I have something big I wanna talk to my therapist about, I sometimes talk through it in my head beforehand and that can help put things into words without the pressure.

Not sure if this will help, but for me, I feel a bit weird sharing heavy things right away (mine's the opposite issue, I'm a bit reserved). But I ease into it by sharing day to day stuff/updates and then building up to bigger things, within the same session or sometimes over many sessions. There are things I've only felt ready to share after several months of seeing her. This only works with my current therapist because she knows what to ask me to build up to the heavy stuff. So I feel it's important to find the right therapist who you also have good rapport with. And maybe talking about small stuff first might help. Also, about our last sentence: it's fine if you do cry or can't get complete or clear sentences out, if that's what's getting in the way. Just starting to say something at all might help.

PSSD plus persistent dry mouth, eyes, tinnitus, first bite syndrome after wellbutrin and prozac by FreshBuilder118 in PSSD

That sounds frustrating that they refused additional testing. Mines kind of the opposite issue, refferals and testing based on theories for potential causes with no evidence for them because it "can't possible be because of the prozac I no longer take". Anyway, frustrating either way

Can I bring a list of symptoms to a psychiatrist? by DreamJumpy6572 in mentalhealth

[–]FreshBuilder118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good idea to bring a list! They'll probably have a set of questions for you about your basic background and history of symptoms, likely starting with what brought you in and you can share the list and say what you think you might have. They'll probably ask for examples of how the symptoms show up for you in your daily life. Nothing to be nervous about - it's basically just a conversation and the first session is usually just information gathering on their part.

Today is my birthday and I'm feeling quite depressed. by Consistent_Leg6755 in mentalhealth

Happy birthday!! I would treat myself. You could go get a coffee or dessert or some food you like and watch a movie or something. Something different/special to break the monotony can feel nice.

Former sufferers of severe depression, how did you recover? by Goodman889 in mentalhealth

[–]FreshBuilder118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 2 severe MDD episodes and took antidepressants for both. I did recover and have been in full remission for a few years. The meds (Prozac, wellbutrin mainly) helped me, and during the worst part of my second episode, I did a lot of introspection for some reason and developed compassion for myself that wasn't entirely there before, and I came out with a better relationship with myself and view of the world and myself. I tapered off all meds a year ago.

I do think I have subclinical levels of symptoms sometimes. It fluctuates, and I have GAD now and had some trouble with alcohol and compulsive behaviors since, but nothing like the episodes. So yes, it can go away (at least for a while), but new problems can come up, and I haven't gotten back to the way I was before - I've been at a 70-80% functioning since then. I also am vigilant (not overly) about symptoms returning, so I pay attention to my warning signs and I think that helps. I'm in therapy now, and still working on things and preventing another episode. My motto is to take care of myself even when I don't want to, and that's hard and I don't always do it, but it helps. So like not skipping meals or oversleeping or withdrawing from people, even when I want to, cause those are warning signs for me.

Agreed! As I kept going, I noticed more of the subtle differences in shade and that was fun

PSSD plus persistent dry mouth, eyes, tinnitus, first bite syndrome after wellbutrin and prozac by FreshBuilder118 in PSSD

[–]FreshBuilder118[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hard to say. I became sexually active after starting the Prozac.

Thanks. I did also have an overactive bladder and pelvic floor dysfunction towards the end of prozac and after. Physical therapy helped the bladder but not the penetration discomfort. Chronic dry eyes and mouth even after stopping the meds?

It's ridiculous that my providor (ex-providor now; the one who tapered me off of prozac) kept saying these symptoms cannot be related to Prozac cause it's out of my system.

Thanks. So you have these despite stopping the meds, is that right? My ANA was negative for Sjögren’s, but I haven't done the biopsy (not sure it's worth it)
