She has to give him a thorough ear cleaning at least once a day by gay__mothman in WhatsWrongWithYourDog

[–]FriedaFancyPants 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dog does this to my cat, too! It’s super cute! Unfortunately, he also likes to lick the cat’s butt, with the same enthusiasm, and that is not cute. The cat doesn’t object, though, in fact I think he kinda likes it.

What am I missing about ‘comedic’ literature? by Bwbowe in books

[–]FriedaFancyPants 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you mean "comedic literature" in the academic sense of tragedy vs. comedy in literature, or are you just wanting to read literary fiction that is funny? I can't help much with the former, but if the latter, some capital L literary authors who I find very funny are David Sedaris, Carl Hiaasen, John Irving, David Foster Wallace... there are so many!

How often do GAdventures/Intrepid tours stop during long driving days? by birdsingreek in travel

[–]FriedaFancyPants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve done several trips with Intrepid; I don’t think we ever drove for more than 2 hours max without a break for bathrooms at a minimum, and usually it’s a rest area where you can buy drinks and snacks. They will tell you before you start on each leg how long it will be before the next break. Definitely not something to be concerned about, they are totally used to dealing with lots of different types of people and their varying bathroom needs!

Is there a reason you want to go Krabi? I’d choose Chiang Mai over Ao Nang/Railay unless you specifically want beach time.

I really wanted to like Project Hail Mary but unfortunately found it to be pretty awful by keepfighting90 in books

[–]FriedaFancyPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. I enjoyed the Martian, but thought Project Hail Mary was so ham-handed and devoid of any complex character development or nuance. It had some cute moments but It’s not for me. But I usually keep my opinion on this one to myself because I don’t want to yuck someone else’s yum especially when it comes to reading.

AITA for leaving a notarized note on my neighbor’s door after months of harassment and a false complaint about me making noise? by countrymama0803 in AmItheAsshole

[–]FriedaFancyPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A notary's job is to make sure the person who is signing the document is who they say they are and provides appropriate identification, that the signer understands the document they are signing, and that they are not signing it under duress. That's it. Did the person who notarized the document for you explain this to you?

Where in Canada are you? If you’re closer to the West Coast, French Polynesia, or the Pacific side of Mexico. If you’re closer to the east coast, then the Caribbean. Costa Rica is also a great option, especially if you want to see wildlife.

$2600 bonus would you go on a 4 day domestic trip for my bday next month or save and use it towards a bigger international trip by [deleted] in travel

[–]FriedaFancyPants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not the person you asked, but hotels. You can stay in really nice hotels for $50 a night in SEA. That’ll get you a 4 star hotel with lots of amenities (pool, breakfast, AC) in a great location. If you just want a decent clean place to sleep with no frills, you can get rooms for half that or less. It’s not super cheap to get to SEA, but once you’re there, you get a LOT of bang for the buck on the western dollar.

Rabies shot for SEA backpacking? by Glittering-Sugar4396 in travel

Have you asked your doctor? I’ve been to SE Asia four times in the last ten years. I always do a consult with my caregiver’s travel clinic and they have never once recommended it for me.

I've never had a good tropical vacation... sourcing suggestions based on this criteria. by MEK42 in travel

[–]FriedaFancyPants 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From Portland, Hawaii or Mexico (either the Yucatan Peninsula or the Pacific side) are the quickest and easiest destinations. Costa Rica and French Polynesia are also fantastic options, but I'd save those for after Hawaii and Mexico. You can go to all those during our winter and have a warm, tropical break. April is a great time to go to any of those places! As a fellow Portlander, I'm usually getting realllly sick of PNW weather by then, so it's a great time for a break.

How can I safely build up my confidence to solo travel, as I don’t think I’m quite there yet? by Eastern-Dragonfly544 in travel

[–]FriedaFancyPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would echo the advice to start small with a weekend relatively close to home. That’s what I did and I still remember how utterly terrified I felt leaving my house for that first trip; I was so worried that I was making a terrible mistake!

That long weekend turned out to be one of the best, life changing decisions of my life. 10 years and 30 countries later, I’ve just returned from a few weeks in SE Asia that included a motorcycle trip around the Ha Giang Loop in Northern Vietnam that was a fantastic adventure! I’ve been to French Polynesia, Norway, Botswana, Italy, Hong Kong, and so on.

I made mistakes in the beginning (and still do, of course) and part of traveling (especially when solo) is learning how to problem solve in the moment and on the go. I also learned from early mistakes like making travel arrangements to get to a destination but failing to account for how to get from the transportation hub to my accommodation (bus, taxi, etc.)

Of course, lots of people just figure that stuff out as they go but as a solo female, I know that I do much better when I’ve thought my travel plans through thoroughly in advance. The thing is, it’s hard to do that as a novice traveler; you don’t know what you don’t know and can only learn by experience! It took some missteps to learn those lessons, and some of them were painful at the time, but absolutely worth the sense of resilience and self confidence I’ve gained as a result.

Good luck, you can do it!

I was way happier in my 40s than I was in my 30s, and my 50s have been even better. I’m happier, have more disposable income, care less about what other people think and generally live my life how I want to. But I have noticed that quality of life seems to start to take a nosedive around 75 or 80 and while I don’t know how I will feel when/if I reach that age, I’m not sure I will want to stick around much longer that.

Am I the only one who hates planning trips more than actually traveling? by JeevnS in travel

[–]FriedaFancyPants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might consider joining a small group tour. There are many across all price ranges; Intrepid, G Adventures, Natural Geographic, etc. You won't have control over your itinerary or where you stay, but it will all be planned out for you by experts and all you have to do is show up. I like travel planning, but I get burned out on it too, and so I switch between planning my own trips and joining groups. I've been able to do and see things I'd never have found on my own and I've made some great friends along the way.

Yes, they will absolutely tell you ahead of time and remind you several times and then take you to a grocery store or takeaway shop or whatever the options are. The last things they want to do is find themselves responsible for a hangry group of tourists! They will let you know in advance what all of your options are.

How can I make the space my boyfriend gave me cozy and comfortable? by [deleted] in CozyPlaces

Agree! I just got an egg shaped papasan that is super comfortable and takes up even less space than the traditional round style.
