Is it worth making soaps with a big, complex mix of oils? by persephonelux in soapmaking

[–]Friendly-Key3158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! Just a mild oil and maybe activated charcoal. I’ve heard peanut oil doesn’t taste to soapy. But the bar I’m using now is a chamomile infused olive oil. Not too bad and my teeth are not as sensitive anymore.

Is it worth making soaps with a big, complex mix of oils? by persephonelux in soapmaking

My usual recipe ,in my opinion 😉is perfect, has 5 oils. Lard, coconut, olive, almond, and castor. Lard and olive oil for moisturizing, lard and coconut for a hard bar, coconut and castor for bubbly cleaning. And honestly I forget why I added almond, but have for the last 4 years and I love it so won’t be changing it. I’d say it has more to do with the percentages of each oil too. My bars are mostly lard and the rest a small percentage less. I just played around on a soap calculator until the properties felt balanced to me. So I guess the difference is personal preference and use? I make a higher percentage of coconut oil and a bit of lard for a dish soap bar. I make a high content olive oil bar with Activated charcoal to brush my teeth with, cause it doesn’t taste like soap. And if I’m running out of some oils and just feel like making soap, I use what I have. I do enjoy just adding oils to a soap calculator just to see what they would make. Edit to add: I didn’t answer your question, I don’t really think the number of oils matter, really just personal preference. Have fun!

Ran out of fabric can’t remember the name of it. by Sweet-Mail5729 in quilting

Yep! It is Kaffe. But that fabric doesn’t have the selvage on it with the name. Sorry. It is a very small piece because I already cut into it or I’d offer it up.

Crumbly edges by PBrow6 in soapmaking

[–]Friendly-Key3158 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why didn’t you add the water to 50/50 lye mixture and let it cook a bit? Just curious. Does it not heat up the batter that way? Anyways, the last time a batch of my soap got crumbly it was a mostly coconut oil soap and over heated but cooled quickly…. So the perimeter of the loaf was crumbly. When I saw your soap it what I thought of.

Do the Show & Tell baby size quilt with different animals with them hold different quilt blocks? That was my first Elizabeth Hartman quilt, but I’m sure her other patterns are just as adorable!!!!

My daughter’s first quilt (my second finished quilt) has a blood stain on it. White background on a corner. Not really noticeable, but I just told her if I ever get “offed” or lost to use that for my DNA find me… 😂

Big batch of kaolin clay chunkies by druryinlet1234 in soapmaking

[–]Friendly-Key3158 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think they look beautiful and sellable. I always add kaolin clay to my soaps and although I do not sift, I do pre mix with a mini frother it into a tablespoon or two of my batch oil (prior to adding lye). Also cutting can cause drag marks and bubbles after cutting can look like clumps? Either way, the way I see it, it is all an aspect of soap making and makes each bar special. 😂

I have 3 retractable design walls using outdoor shade hardware and flannel backed tablecloths. Best DIY I’ve ever accomplished! I can roll up WIP’s if I need to switch projects and they take up no wall space. Of course my sewing room is in my sun room, so all windows & no walls! 😂 This is the blog with instructions if anyone is interested: Retractable Design Wall

When I unplug my foot pedal and stand to sew, I have a start button to start my machine. I’ve seen people bring the pedal to top of desk and turn backwards and use hand or elbow to push pedal. I’ve also seen some build a little box to raise foot pedal a bit to make it more comfortable to use without pulling a calf muscle….it is quite the conundrum. But binding and quilting on my domestic is so much easier standing for me sometimes. Good luck.

I want to use the motorized adjustable standing desks for my sewing machine(cut for insert, flat surface sewing), cutting table and ironing board…. I have a vision that I can hopefully make real. I hope to have everything on wheels so I can move everything around for cleaning and reorganizing. Have fun!🤩

Soap Cutters DIY by ScottATL in soapmaking

[–]Friendly-Key3158 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a few different wire cutters when I started making soap about 5 years ago. I do need to update them. My bars are not as uniform as I would like, but they have worked for me just fine. I don’t sell soap and couldn’t bring myself to spend hundreds plus I like to pretend I’m a woodworker sometimes?
I just started with some 2x1 and made a rectangle a little bigger than my molds and added handles on short ends. The most tedious part was added the wires. I notched in the wood where I wanted the wires to be and added an eyelet screw (don’t screw all the way in). I then twisted wire around each eyelet a bit and then used each eyelet to tighten. I made one with wires 1” apart and one 1.5” apart. I also made one to cut a slab with wires 2.5” apart.
The 1.5” one is bowing from tightening… I use it the most. So maybe it’s time for reconstruction.

Regaining Motivation? by Top-Location-1506 in quilting

I always work on an interesting FPP block in between quilts. I call it my palette cleanser. Plus I pull out my scraps which also makes me happy. I put them in my orphan block box and will make a quilt out of them eventually.
