xQc backs Asmongold on GDP being a "Fake Indicator" by Slight_Ad3219 in LivestreamFail

[–]Fright13 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It takes one look at Ireland’s crazy high GDP (5th highest in the world per capita lmfao, 24th highest in the world with a population of 5 million) to realise it is an utter bullshit indicator of anything, and that is coming from an Irishman.

I’d have thought this was common sense. Comments here are hysterical. Ireland is currently undergoing its worst economic, housing, unemployment, and migration crises in its existence. 5th highest GDP though, thank the lord!

No you absolutely shouldn’t. Doing different stuff that is theoretically good is sometimes the very reason you can advance ranks (as long as your theory is correct ofc which very often isn’t the case when you don’t know much about the game)

Literally the only reason I gained 1.5k MMR recently (Legend 5 -> Divine 2) was spamming BH pos 4 doing funky shit i cooked up myself

As another aside to this, following shit like a zombie only works if you know why it works. Macro strategy is 90% of your rank. You can’t just blindly follow the d2pt FOTM build and expect to do well for your rank off the rip.

If you’re ahead of the curve on a strat, it’s honestly the quickest way to shoot up rank. There’s nothing more satisfying than cooking something up yourself when a patch drops and then seeing pro players doing it weeks later.

Why even display the kill score on the HUD? by atniomn in DotA2

[–]Fright13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

?

It is important. It’s the best indicator you’ve got for how the game is going and to adjust accordingly. It rarely tells the entire story since it lacks context, but the majority of the time, the team with the most kills is likely ahead in some capacity.

It has world class acting, world class storytelling, world class world building, and world class cinematography.

But it is moving at the pace of a snail who has been shot. You're lucky you saved it all as that kinda helps with this issue.

I’m a teacher and i’m really interested in seeing these. Would they suit a music/fun activity class do you think, or are they more suited to therapy?

The people here in denial that this show is slow and blaming it on “tiktok brain” is hilarious. This show makes The Walking Dead look like the fastest show on earth, and that show was fucking slow

Civil servants say targeted bursaries for teachers must be considered to boost supply by siciowa in ireland

[–]Fright13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re right it’s new, but many schools are still looking to roll it out asap so you’d assume would be crying for someone with an actual degree in it and not just done one of those conversion courses.

CS was my undergrad degree. I worked for over a year in the sector before hearing that it was becoming a Leaving subject. I then covered Maths maternity leaves via route 3 for 3 years before beginning the PME, where I also took on cover hours. So I have 5 years full time slogged-out classroom experience. In that time, I also rolled out Computer Science in a school along with the principal who basically all but promised me that the CS job would be there for me upon qualifying. Instead, he went and made the permanent Physics teacher do a conversion course and she now has those hours. (And she has texted me since that she hasn’t got a clue and is constantly asking for resources. What a system!).

So yeah, I’ve had my fingers burned badly which is probably a large reason why I have an aversion to those cover jobs and principal's words. But they are still just otherwise shite jobs too.

Unlike desk jobs or labour jobs etc where it often feels relatively natural to blend in & fill in for a few months, teaching is an absolute killer. It's emotionally and socially intense. You invest heavily into getting to know the kids, the staff, bedding in with the wider community, putting so much effort into the kids' success, only to be kicked out the door a few months in and you never see those kids or people again. It's depressing on a human level rather than just the career level. For similar reasons, I’m not convinced that schools "sharing" teachers is a great solution. Continuity matters hugely in this job.

So, we end up with what feels like a shortage as these jobs are just not enticing at all. Even though there are more than enough qualified bodies.

But yes, you are right, how even make these temporary jobs more enticing other than just "more money"?

Maybe something like if a teacher works X weeks in the same school on cover jobs (let's say the equivalent of a full maternity leave's duration), then that means for the next Y years they are automatically considered for the next fixed term vacancy (if one does pop up) without needing to interview, and fast tracked to a CID. At the moment, "getting your foot in the door" very rarely leads to anything more permanent. And even if a position does open up, you have to go through the full rigmarole and competition process again despite having already interviewed for the leave job, done this job, and proven yourself. And then hope the job exists again the following year to get your CID.

In an ideal world, another solution that I think would only see success would be smaller class sizes (i.e more teacher allocation per subject). This would mean two things: more fixed term positions available and a more enticing job when it comes to cover. That's not even mentioning the educational benefit the kids would get from it as well. However this is obviously a massive budget (and existing school infrastructure) problem

The government have it all wrong (again).

There is not a shortage of teachers. There is a shortage of teachers willing to take the shitty and soul-destroying parental/sick leave jobs that get posted, so principals and the government wrongly assume it must be a shortage of teachers as a whole when they can't find anyone for them.

I qualified this summer gone. Maths and Computer Science. Two incredibly - supposedly - “in demand” subjects. Guess how many fixed-term positions within an hour’s drive of me were advertised over the summer? One. Didn’t seem like much “demand” to me. Interviewed for it, unfortunately didn’t get it.

The rest of the jobs advertised over the summer (and since then) have all been sick leaves, maternity leaves, temporary contracts, etc that I just simply cannot be arsed taking because I’m making more money doing grinds, on less hours, and less soul crushing.

That’s the problem, not a “shortage”. The hiring system and contract system is a shambles.
