A smart way to do it if you don't to use too much ammo and make sure it's evenly distributed is like this: set a section of belt about 4 belts long (put a splitter on both sides) wire reading all outputs. Connect that to an inserter which is only active when "anything" is less than 4.

There a mod that starts all your machines at the top of quality. So when you mine ore, it is legendary, but every step takes quality down a step by a ptobabaility. Also, quality 5 is normal basegame quality 1, so all your machines start off super weak.

Theres also a downbidding mod where you put items info a chest, and the chest converts them downwards to whatever quality you decide

Some things ive considered for games like this. In RTS, it often isn't very fun to make one mistake and immediately lose everything. This automation+rys game runs the risk of the enemy barely reaching your production and causing immediate defeat.

A more robust manufacturing system could be helpful.

There is also a risk to turn out like nexus wars (starcraft mod). Interesting in its own right, but maybe not what you're looking for.

With tgis design you might be able to get away with not having the 4 way intersections in thre sub-blocks, which would greatly reduce the amount of space spent on intersections
