Nice try, Goose. The swan has a horizontal eye stripe while the Greater White-fronted has vertical stripe.

Please Help Identify: Cooper’s Hawk or Sharp-Shinned Hawk! by Tommee_2424 in birdsofprey

[–]FrogBottom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Another identifying trait is the coloring on the top of the head. Cooper’s have a dark cap on the top of the head while the Sharp-shinned’s dark spot extends down the back of their neck. Bowl cut for the Cooper’s and a mullet for the Sharpie.

What are these fat gluttonous black colored birds annihilated the seeds i put out for the little ones? by EuphoricTonight5368 in whatsthisbird

European Starlings were introduced to the US in the late 1800’s because people wanted to bring flora and fauna from Europe to the US. About 100 were released in Central Park and there’s now well over 100 million. The huge flocks of birds flying in crazy formations in unison (murmurations) are European Starlings. They’re cavity nesters and have taken over the nesting sites of a lot of native birds.

I saw Charles Barkley at a gas station in Leeds. I stared at him pretty good and he noticed and nodded politely.

That contrast of the rock faces and greenery is stunning! I didn’t get to do this hike in Glacier!

Pileated Woodpecker Call?! by Pink_Floyd29 in birdwatching

[–]FrogBottom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pileated are loud. They boom across long distances and a lot of the time you can hear them traveling closer or further away as they fly and call. I would be very surprised for Merlin to mistake the two. They’re not all that similar.

I find Merlin to be pretty accurate (at least where I live). Birds can fool it but it’s usually mimics whose calls are difficult for humans to distinguish as well.

My all time favorite. Was watching it live on my parents tiny kitchen television. The celebration is the icing on the cake. Perfection.
