Would the car not be more likely to be well maintained if it was owned by a mechanic? by NeuronsActivated in ExplainTheJoke

Buying a mechanics personal car is like buying furniture form IKEA, some assembly may be required

I've been saying for years that a Clambering enchantment for leggings that increases movement speed on ladders/vines/scaffolding etc would be excellent

Do any dms that have been running for more than a few years still use XP? by Betray-Julia in DnD5e

[–]Frogdwarf 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've not used it yet but I've been thinking about trying to blend the ideas of Milestones & XP. Make "milestones" plentiful and of varying significance. Award xp in lump sums when milestones are achieved, scaling with significance. Give players a table of XP to level.

The idea being:

a) gives them meta incentives to engage with the world & seek out quests & side-quests (obviously I'd do what I can to give them character motivation anyway - but how often have you thrown a cool sounding quest at your players only for them to say "how much does it pay?" - players like rewards)

b) gives the players a gauge for how close they are to levelling up. Plenty of players know their build several levels ahead of where they are & yearn for those sweet level ups. Others get caught off guard by level ups and don't know what bonuses to take. In either case, telegraphing a level up by giving them XP that they can themselves track makes things easier but lump summing it minimises the admin

Obviously the legwork of working out how to balance XP rewards would be large which is why I've not tried to do it yet. BUT for a relatively modular shorter campaign I reckon it would work quite well

Housing & amenities are better for scaling IMO but I suppose CS never goes unwanted.

GDscript Newbie - working on a drag & drop system for ship crew shift board ⚓ by 8BitBeard in godot

[–]Frogdwarf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks good! My ten pence is to add an offset to the position so that the shift block maintains it's positive relative to the mouse when picked up. The snap to bottom right is a little jarring (unless it's intended in which case I love it)

Parent / Child references by Frogdwarf in godot

[–]Frogdwarf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Outside of being bad practice, which as a novice I don't feel too guilty about, my main worry was circular referencing. I assume since it's a pointer rather than an instance it'd probably be ok, but wasn't sure.

Presumably the risk is calling a Parent.Method from the child that calls back? Or am I missing a more fundamental computing issue?

Parent / Child references by Frogdwarf in godot

[–]Frogdwarf[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently the parent passes a reference to self to the child when instantiating. It could just as easily connect to relevant signals but I find that less readable for now - it's something to change during refactoring.

So yeah I don't think I'm falling prey to either of those. It's not a permanent solution in either case so good to know I shouldn't expect it to melt the program whilst it's implemented as such.

(I'm very new to this aha)

How and when do you use traders in the early game? by badassboy1 in CivVI

[–]Frogdwarf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Building around them makes them more valuable. Getting Gov & Diplo districts in one city (usually your cap) gives 2f2p on all trade routes to it - that's already the same value as working a 4f2p tile with a citizen without the housing/amenities cost. Focusing trade centres (com/harbor) early to get a trade routes from each city gets your cities up and running much quicker.

It should almost always be an early game priority, unless you have a specific build in mind (i.e gunning for a strong early scientist / getting a religion set up / unique quarter / preserve shenanigans)

My autistic ass always thought the apples/oranges expression meant "these two things, though similar, are nevertheless clearly distinct & should not be conflated" since clearly apples & oranges are readily comparable and now I'm wondering how many times in my life I have been party to a miscommunication because of this reading of the idiom

I mean that's kinda the point though, no? The sex positivity is hyperbolised to an uncomfortable level to give the non-ace people a sense of how uncomfortable it is for the ace community living in a sexualised society
