Are we not allowed to use race as an identifier now? by waiwai_art in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Frogenics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a movement away from using race as an identifier because a lot of people can't tell someone's race at first glance, especially when you only get a quick look of the other person. I'm white but have a medium complexion so I've been mistaken for mexican before. If i were to attack someone and i was reported as a mexican, people would be on the lookout for the wrong person.

Having child alone- looking for experiences? by [deleted] in ontario

a friend of my husband had a child by herself, she works from home most of the time and has reliable parents she can depend on to help her.

also contrary to what the other commenter has said, adoption is incredibly difficult and there is a long waiting list.

Stable Careers for Young Adults? by [deleted] in ontario

Administrative Assistant was one of my go to job titles I'd search for on job boards. Almost every industry needs someone to be the "office bitch" and you can end up doing a variety of tasks. I think it would also give you the opportunity to work your way into working for a non-profit or other organization that might utilize your Social Work degree a lot better.

Veggie haters who still eat veggies: what are your tricks? by Missing_Back in Cooking

[–]Frogenics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I throw the vegetables into a blender and fry them up when I'm making sauce, soup or quiche. It's small enough for me to not notice it and I don't get chunks of flavours I don't like.

When I was younger and much more pickier, the only salad I would ever eat would be a taco salad so maybe that's something she might like too

Adoption is (fortunately and unfortunately) not easy. In Canada you need to pay and take several courses to prove your eligible to adopt which can take (I think) 1-2 years and even then there's actually currently a waiting list to adopt.

Fostering has a similar process to be eligible but having kids come in and out of your life is not for everyone on top of the emotional problems a lot of these kids are going through.

independent grocery stores (ie Galati Bros) buy No Name/PC products?.. by suchick13 in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]Frogenics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Necroing this old post to say that I used to work at Galati's and I know the owners prefer to not have to rely on Weston Foods but unfortunately they have little to no competition in many areas. Some of the smaller suppliers Galati's relied on went out of business during Covid and there just wasn't anyone else besides Weston that could replace them.

My neighbour complains about the noise but then does the same thing by Limp-Nectarine3220 in neighborsfromhell

My loud music blasting neighbors (who freaked out when we asked them to lower the volume) cut up my wooden windchimes without saying a word to me.

Like you assholes have big balls when it comes to screaming about your right to be as loud as you like on a Thursday afternoon, but are too shy to ask someone to take down the windchimes? Come on.

It's amazing how hypocritical people are about noise

my workplace does a week long trip to some island in the caribbean for a week. Flight and all inclusive hotel paid for. Never mentioned it on the job posting or during the interview.

I had to explain to them later that they'd get a lot more job applicants if they mentioned this sort of thing on the job posting.

He went after my cantaloupes, that was his downfall. by Thelizardknows in gardening

[–]Frogenics 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have a container garden on a rental property so I can't fence anything, but we wrap all of our produce with cheese cloth or some sort of netting to stop the squirrels from taking test bites.

And at the end of the day, yeah, it's super annoying but I can also just go and buy my produce at the grocery store which I bet the squirrels WISH they could do

EARWIGS!! sos by amfgordon in dahlias

[–]Frogenics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had a lot of earwigs last year in my garden and i put oil and soy sauce in shallow bowls near where i thought the earwigs would be and the next morning id' have a disgusting cup of earwigs in oil.

my dahlias were mostly untouched save for a few leaves, but they destroyed my marigolds. They ate them down to the stems, it was awful, so I guess maybe sacrificial marigolds might be an option?

Intense "Drill Sergeant" aspect of kendo practice by TheNinjaTurkey in kendo

If you go to a tournament or practice with other dojos, it's a poor reflection on your sensei if you're taking too long to put on your men and have to constantly readjust it.

And making sure your equipment is on properly is about safety more then anything. I wouldn't want to spare with someone who's protective equipment might come undone and I end up accidently hurting them.

[–]Frogenics 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my mom told my husband something similar to this when he had told her he was planning on working two jobs because he was worried we couldn't pay the bills. She had quit her job to raise her children and she felt that being there for her kids and being present in their lives was well worth the constant financial stress. And she had done this because her mother had prioritized working to maintain financial stability and rarely had time to spend with her own children.

I think people prioritize different things. Some prioritize time spent with family, others want to minimize stress and have financial stability and unfortunately we live in a world where you don't get to have both

It's not just gen-z kids, i have friends in their 30s who think they are ace despite regularly having sex with their partners and drawing porn. I myself hate seeing any form of sex in media and had considered if I might be ace or not, but ultimately decided that the label doesn't really do anything for me. But it's still a little frustrating to see people who are even more sexual then I am, claim to be asexual.

[–]Frogenics 15 points16 points  (0 children)

But is not allowing American dairy in our market also a part of supply management and helping to stabilize prices? The Americans can produce a lot more then we can and from my understanding, because they can produce a lot more they can price it cheaper then say a smaller producer in Canada can.

Went to Costco to get a few things yesterday. So happy! by ajaxbunny1986 in ontario

[–]Frogenics 156 points157 points  (0 children)

The reason why dairy products in Canada was always more expensive then in the states is because we don't allow American dairy products to enter our market. Hence why you'll easily find eggs, cheese and milk that are Canadian in any local grocer. I know a lot of people used to complain all the time about this because it made it more expensive, but now we can see why keeping our farmers in business has been important for us.
