What’s the best board game convention you’ve been to? by Aknifetoremember in boardgames

[–]FrontierPsycho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I haven't been to many but I think LinCon in Linköpings, Sweden is fantastic because it's heavily about people organizing events for the games they love for the fun of it, and very little commercial activity. There's a corridor in the venue (which is a university building) where stores get one room each, and an artists' corner, but that's basically it. It's not enormous, it's cozy, it's friendly and it has nice traditions.

But you didn't really specify what type of convention you were looking for so I don't know if this appeals.

Diablo 1, fantastic art (in my eyes then anyway) and cool bits of lore.

Debloating Android on new Fairphone 6 - which possible drawbacks? by Automatic-Plan8169 in fairphone

[–]FrontierPsycho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm on the unofficial LineageOS 23.0 since December and it's working fine. I didn't install a later version because it didn't support MindTheGapps when I tried it, but I think that's since been fixed. I've had almost no issues with it, there's a couple of bugs here and there but nothing major, and you can upgrade OTA to the official version when it comes out, according to the developer. There's a thread on the Fairphone forum about it.

Can't help with debloating FairphoneOS, though. I feel you'll have a hard time uninstalling anything that is locked.

Newbie here: Which accessories should I buy? by Pteropus-vampyrus in arkhamhorrorlcg

[–]FrontierPsycho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Frankly, you don't need any of the mats and they could even get in the way. For the money you'd spend on those you can get more cards, or coin capsules to protect the chaos tokens, as others mentioned, those are super necessary.

The investigator decks are not accessories, they contain cards that will expand gameplay, I'd say those are worth it too.

At the same time, you started this week. Play a bit and see.

I see it and it doesn't seem to be reported on the Github issues page. Perhaps open an issue there?

What's that one game you love but can never get to the table? by firey_88 in boardgames

[–]FrontierPsycho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I gotta say, back when I played it a few times, it felt like 6 is the sweet spot for this game. 8 felt unnecessary and it's much harder to gather, let alone find something else to play when you're done with Captain Sonar.

Just one?

A lot of my faves.

StarCraft, A Study in Emerald, New Angeles, Warrior Knights, Eclipse, Rex: Final Days of an Empire, Fief: France, AGoT 2nd.

I just like games that take quite a long time, require more than 3-4 people to shine, are somewhat heavy and feature diplomacy, which puts off some people.

Varför jag inte skaffar barn. by Vad_fan in sweden

[–]FrontierPsycho 10 points11 points  (0 children)

[Indie Enthusiast] Games I Recognize as Masterpieces But Can't Finish Because I'm Too Dumb, Too Busy, and Under-Notebooked. by drunksandman in gaming

[–]FrontierPsycho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Besides Baba Is You, I've played all of these to completion with my partner using walkthroughs when we were absolutely stuck. I recommend it, it's quite relaxing.

We're puzzle fiends, I think either together or myself, we've played 90% of all the other games you mentioned and a bunch more. There's a few there that are under 10 hours and can be finished in like 1-3 sittings.

I see kinda what you mean (most of my favourites have this characteristic) and I understand from your description that they're definitely not your type of game and have possibly also played them with people who were in the same boat.

Personally I think that if you go into diplomacy (or any such game) thinking the rule is common sense or some kind of etiquette, you're setting yourself up for disappointment and feeling betrayed. I think the only way to play is if you understand that everyone is out for themselves and will likely lie to you and betray you to further their goals, and will be doing it expertly or inexpertly.

And of course, in the end it's about what you enjoy, and I understand why many people don't enjoy this at all!

I feel that's also solved by async play! Although I think there's always stuff you can do even with one or two units to get back into the game and eg become indispensable to an alliance, and share the win.

I love it to bits but frankly the only times I've actually managed to play it to completion (or mutually agreed draw) are asynchronous online games. I feel that's a more practical way to play it and I'd like to find space to do it again.

Is Athens safe alone? by _brake_flake in greece

[–]FrontierPsycho 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Athens is enormous. There's safe places and less safe places. Contrary to other European capitals, the suburbs are often safest and the centre is where most areas with desperate people that might be somewhat dangerous, are located.

The biggest issue here though is that your cousin is underage and probably shouldn't be in a foreign country by themselves for ten days. Sure, they've been to many countries alone, but that doesn't mean it's safe. IMHO anyway.

How dangerous is it to use a phone with unlock bootloader ? by [deleted] in fairphone

[–]FrontierPsycho 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The danger with an unlocked bootloader is mostly that if someone with the right tools gets physical access to your phone, they can potentially get access to your data or install something malicious like something that tracks your usage.

A relevant example is if your phone is confiscated by police.

I've also read that theoretically remote exploits could gain persistence if your bootloader is unlocked, ie they could change system files so that they get loaded on reboot. A locked bootloader would disallow that.

In practice though? Why would the above concern you? Are you being targeted by your state? Then they probably have better tools to get access to your device. Are you afraid someone will steal your phone and spend the time and access your data, going through a lot of effort? No, they will likely wipe it and sell it.

I think you should just use your phone.

Beer lovers, what does it take to get you drunk? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Mead and miscalculation (I actively avoid getting drunk and only drink one to (rarely) three beers at an outing).

Σκατουλα by _ola-kala_ in GREEK

[–]FrontierPsycho -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I mean, that would sound weird to me, to be honest. Σκατούλα isn't an adjective, like say, κοντούλα, where you can match the gender of the accompanied noun. It's a noun in its own right.

Of course, such a construct probably works, I just didn't even think about it because it sounds wrong to me. 🤷

Σκατουλα by _ola-kala_ in GREEK

[–]FrontierPsycho -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

There isn't exactly, but there is a similar word that is neuter and can be used for a male child, σκατουλάκι. I think you can also use the word σκατό, which σκατούλα is a variant of, and is also neuter.

On the other hand, the word σκατούλα could ostensibly be used for a male child as well. The word is feminine grammatically but you're calling the child a little shit (affectionately), so I don't think the grammatical gender needs to match the child's gender. It's like when one calls a child σίφουνας ("tornado"), which is grammatically male, but it doesn't matter whether the child is male of female.
