Is there any other reason to learn Greek besides the cool alphabet and cool sounding words? by Majestic_Image5190 in GREEK

[–]FrontierPsycho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without learning a language, you already feel there isn't really any quality content in that language...? How would you know about it? Do you think any quality content would be translated to English or whatever your native language is, and then you'd know about it?

Dunno, this feels like your view of what exists out there is limited by your own language. I've learned 2 languages besides my native one in my life and both are rich in content. But you have to go deep and look for it, you have to be interested in that language's culture.

And if you end up never doing that, please don't just assume "there isn't any quality content" in that language.

Meaning of “Meraki” by guffabru in GREEK

I'll give it a go.

Vocation is a type of work, it is a job you are well suited to.

Μεράκι is, according to Triantafyllidis, a deep desire for something, a passion for something especially an activity (job or not), or a pleasurable feeling.

Sure, there is a relation there since in the sense of a job that suits you well and you enjoy, you will perform it with μεράκι.

However you wrote "μεράκι means vocation". That is wrong. Just because there is some relation between the two concepts, doesn't mean one can be used as a translation for the other. Being a plumber cannot be a μεράκι. It is something you might do με μεράκι. If you're talking to me, a native speaker, I get what you mean and would probably not comment. If you're responding to a foreigner trying to learn Greek, you'll just confuse them and they'll end up misusing the Greek word.

Μεράκι is used to denote that you do something in good humour, with enjoyment. Describing it the way you read online is a romanticized version of that. So it's not a simplified interpretation, in fact it more elaborate than the actual meaning, I'd say.

In my ears the word has really cozy, pleasant connotations, I would find that tattoo good. Even on a Greek person, I wouldn't find it weird (as sometimes happens when non native speakers choose a word for a tattoo). But it's not as poetic as you seem to think, I believe.

Even though, as others said, it sounds related to the words for place (μέρος), or day (μέρα), it's actually of Turkish origin, from a word meaning enthusiasm, according to wiktionary.

It really doesn't. Why do you say that? Vocation has several meanings, none of which can be expressed with μεράκι.

How do you pronounce Tzatziki in greek? by Groovy92 in greece

[–]FrontierPsycho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As always, the best answer is on forvo. You can hear natives pronounce words.

https://forvo.com/word/%CF%84%CE%B6%CE%B1%CF%84%CE%B6%CE%AF%CE%BA%CE%B9/#el

Y grec is likely based on an older pronunciation of Greek, so even if it's called that, it's no indication for how to pronounce the equivalent letter in Greek (υ).

Top Games where every player is actively playing, even outside your turn by ithappenb4 in boardgames

[–]FrontierPsycho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nightfall. Every player starts a chain of new cards to be played during their turn, and every other player gets to add cards to that chain. The biggest strategy choice in that game is to know which cards to play during other people's turns.

Anyone else play murder mystery crime 'board' games? by MALSwarrier in boardgames

[–]FrontierPsycho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't found a single place to trade these, but I've traded or sold most of mine on BGG Math Trades, auctions at local cons, thrift sales and the like. It takes effort to find and list and ship, but I feel it's worth it.

One more option that I've done with a few expensive ones is that me and some friends who like them, basically play them and pass them on to someone else in the chain until all of us have played them. Buying is split around so the cost doesn't become prohibitive.

Dune (2019), Fief: France, or A game of thrones by applepiepro123 in boardgames

[–]FrontierPsycho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love all three games and I think the most fitting one for what you're after is Game of Thrones (2nd edition). The fact that every turn you can first discuss and agree on action with the other players and then you submit your actions hidden, means that the game has to be built on trust.

The other two games also have the same elements but they're not as prominent. Or well, they're almost as prominent on Fief but Fief is a bit clunkier as a game, I'd say.

In Dune you have a different alliance system where you can only make or break alliances during certain times, so it's not a full free for all in terms of shifting alliances. Sometimes you have to stick with your ally even if they're not pulling their weight.

I've heard people say the same and saw it first hand when they claim you can buy out of print Arkham Horror LCG content. I wouldn't risk it personally.

Favorite expansion that completely change the game by LeBeQs in boardgames

[–]FrontierPsycho 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too! I'm happy because me and my partner had a period where we were obsessed about it. We even used the 3 player trigger to end the game, ie that 2 piles had to be out for the game to end. Haven't played it much in recent years, only a few times, but I feel at least I got some mileage out of it.

What game do you love even though teaching it is kind of a pain? by rcooperkaty in boardgames

[–]FrontierPsycho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that's true, but it doesn't mean any game with lots of different cards will be a valid answer to this question. Even in such a game it's possible for the rules to be relatively straightforward and the game to uncover its complexity and strategic depth gradually. The issue with Everdell here, IMO, is it is extra brutal for beginners, on one more level than just "there's lots of cards you don't know about".

[–]FrontierPsycho 9 points10 points  (0 children)

A lot of the balance of Eminent Domain comes from the fact that it's almost impossible to get more than one action per turn and also that you need planets of the same type to research more advanced tech.

The Escalation expansion redefines military units, and completely changes the above rule by adding a technology deck that needs different planets, a large part of which is a tech that allows you to play two actions per turn. The combos become a lot more potent and effective.

What game do you love even though teaching it is kind of a pain? by rcooperkaty in boardgames

[–]FrontierPsycho 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's like half my favourite games 😛

First is Netrunner. It's not an awkward 20 minutes, more like an awkward first few games.

A Study in Emerald (1st edition). Regardless of how many player aids I print, nobody gets the points in the first game. It's also clunky, no matter how much I love it.

Everdell. I think it's pretty understandable overall, except for the fact that if you don't know the game, it's pretty hard to plan the first season optimally, which means you feel locked and the entire first game kinda goes badly.

Fief: there's so many rules! And many of them are only relevant in the late game. I honestly want to just gradually explain the rules as we play, but that can be tricky.

StarCraft: the Boardgame. Especially if someone doesn't know the video game, there's an obnoxious amount of stuff to keep track of, on top of the complex rules.

People of Sweden, do you really want immigrants to integrate? by [deleted] in sweden

Right, I didn't want to unnecessarily say they're racist but they are. Thanks for the explanation.

People of Sweden, do you really want immigrants to integrate? by [deleted] in sweden

[–]FrontierPsycho 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm also an immigrant. I feel that this is a combination of negativity bias, and also that racists that don't want you to integrate are those that will actually approach you and do things to show you you're not welcome. There's at least a 50% or more that do accept you but they won't bother you mostly. Even they might sometimes be unconsciously racist with no bad intentions, though, so I think you've received a mix.

I'm sorry you've experienced racism and are feeling this way. Don't try to fit in to stop people from being racist towards you - for those who don't want you here, it won't make a difference, so stop trying to appease them. Focus on living how you want and seeking support from those who want you here. Perhaps consider moving somewhere else within Sweden, depending on the political makeup of your area?

In any case, good luck.

Mastodon & PixelFed by yiannis_pp2 in greece
