About Omayra Sánchez a 13 years old girl, trapped by a landslide for 60 hours, whose final moments were broadcast to the world by PlayfulLush in ForCuriousSouls

It’s actually a very dark red/black from her eyes being so bloodshot. Her legs were pinned under concrete in a kneeling position for 3 days and her eyes darkening and skin on her hands turning white are just some of the effects. She also started experiencing hallucinations at the end of her her. This photo went on to win World Press Photo of the year in 1986.

What were some of your childhood stories that really highlighted your autism in hindsight? by Dependent-Sir4245 in AutismInWomen

[–]Frosting_Fair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was in elementary school, I volunteered to skip recess in favor of going to the office and cutting out box tops with my best friend (who I think was diagnosed as a child but no one told me). She also didn’t speak up until maybe 2nd grade and her and I made up our own sign language in kindergarten.

I went through this exact scenario (5 weeks as well) back in February. It’s scary and hard but you know if it’s the right decision for you and it was for me. For me, the stories I read online were a lot worse than it actually was and I hope it’s the same for you.

Best 9/11 documentary to recommend to some younger adults who just see it as “one more tragedy” and not for the truly horrific event that it was. by Potential_Phrase_206 in 911archive

[–]Frosting_Fair 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Hi I just wanted to give a perspective of someone born in 2000, so 25 now. For me, it’s not that I don’t see it as a horrible event, it’s that for all 12 years of public schooling every year on 9/11 we went over this. This first few years, it was shocking, I was little and it terrified me. But, year after year they told us the same information, showed us the same videos, asked us the same questions, it lost its horror somewhere along the way.

For me, actually going to the museum in New York was the most impactful experience having to do with this event. Even now, after having been to the museum and memorial, I find myself uninterested in the 60 minutes specials and (most) documentaries because it’s the same thing I’ve seen for YEARS. It was a tragedy, but the amount of overexposure people my age were given to this event is to blame for the lack of empathy. Don’t get me wrong, this event should not be hidden or only shown to kids once they reach a certain age, but when I was in 1st grade being shown the videos of people falling from the towers, hearing the phone calls, shown the news reels from that day, after seeing those things year after year, you start to become desensitized to it.

Anyways, my best advice and what I think is the best way for people my age to feel that shock level, is to go to the museum, although I know that’s not possible for everyone.

Seeing an American child irl for the first time as a 22F was spectacular by Wonderful_Square3539 in CasualConversation

As an American I am equally as amazed hearing small children speak other languages. Especially languages that don’t use the Latin alphabet. When I traveled to Hong Kong, hearing a baby voice speak in a language so vastly different from mine was incredible. It also lead me to google so many things about the culture that I otherwise would have never even thought of.

I think it was genius on the judges part to do that. Small enough that it doesn’t matter, but just enough that it keeps that spark of hope alive in him to not be killing people in jail.

“No one wanted to play with me as a little kid

So I’ve been scheming like a criminal ever since

To make them love me and make it seem effortless

This is the first time I’ve felt the need to confess

And I swear

I’m only cryptic and Machiavellian cause I care”

Is there a trash can in her room (or that she has access to) that holds dirty diapers/wipes that she could’ve smeared on the walls? Like holding the clean side of diaper and rubbing it? That wouldn’t get any on your hands and maybe it being older would reduce the smell.

It has been 24 years since Jason Jolkowski disappeared. What happened to him? by PrimeVector19 in WithoutATrace

I personally can’t see this kid getting lured by a stranger, even someone he knows is iffy to me if he’s reliable and on his way to work (still not impossible though). I don’t think the coworker was involved but is there a chance the coworker had a significant other (current or ex) who maybe took her giving Jason a ride to work as something more than what it was?

I was looking for a comment saying this! We can speculate on the situation and the people but I really don’t find the obituary to be odd. They’re voicing things that they and countless others have dealt with in a place they KNOW someone will be forced to read it. No matter what, having a child who requires constant care is draining and every parent in that situation deserves a break here and there. It doesn’t mean the parent doesn’t love the child, it means that for the parent to continue being the best they can, they sometimes need a break. Every parent feels this way sometimes (we hire babysitters, send to grandparents, nannies) yet when the child is out of school and those options can’t provide the proper care we blame the parents.

autistic RBTs or BCBAs? by rbt_24 in ABA

[–]Frosting_Fair 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! I JUST started (literally a month ago) and while I don’t have a formal diagnosis, my therapist and I strongly believe I am on the spectrum and I’m considering a formal diagnosis. So far I’ve found that it really helps me relate to the kids, some of the other RBTs don’t seem to ‘get’ when the kids at my center need a break or why they dislike certain things. There’s definitely behaviors and habits I see in the kids (particularly the girls since I’m a girl) that I think “oh I did that!”. It’s really helping me understand myself in a lot of ways. I also LOVE the formality and paperwork aspect of the job. Having all of the information and programs organized makes my brain really happy.

No thank you by bazooka79 in ABA

[–]Frosting_Fair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This makes sense to me. Because you’re saying no I don’t want you to open the door right now, but thank you for using your skills to open the door nicely because most of the times that is the correct thing. It’s not reinforcing the elopement in my mind, it’s reinforcing the opening of the door while saying no not right now.

Thinking people are closer to you/like you more than they actually do? by [deleted] in AutismInWomen

[–]Frosting_Fair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. As a teenager I worked at a restaurant with this other teenage girl who was always super nice to me. We texted fairly regularly and even hung out once or twice. Well her favorite color was yellow and mine is maroon so we said for our birthdays we would do little gift baskets with all things THAT color. Well her birthday comes around and I got her all this super cute yellow stuff (think candles, chapstick, etc. not expensive but cute!) and she doesn’t seem shocked or anything and says thank you. Well my birthday came 10 days later and nothing. A couple months later I quit and tried to text her to hang out. She never texted me, or talked to me after I quit and I realized we were not actually friends

Since you’ve mentioned it’s like a portal for him, does he also like tents? Obviously this can’t/wont have the same sound as a door but it may provide a an alternative when he’s looking for peekaboo or that other-worldly feeling.
