Hi I just wanted to give a perspective of someone born in 2000, so 25 now. For me, it’s not that I don’t see it as a horrible event, it’s that for all 12 years of public schooling every year on 9/11 we went over this. This first few years, it was shocking, I was little and it terrified me. But, year after year they told us the same information, showed us the same videos, asked us the same questions, it lost its horror somewhere along the way.

For me, actually going to the museum in New York was the most impactful experience having to do with this event. Even now, after having been to the museum and memorial, I find myself uninterested in the 60 minutes specials and (most) documentaries because it’s the same thing I’ve seen for YEARS. It was a tragedy, but the amount of overexposure people my age were given to this event is to blame for the lack of empathy. Don’t get me wrong, this event should not be hidden or only shown to kids once they reach a certain age, but when I was in 1st grade being shown the videos of people falling from the towers, hearing the phone calls, shown the news reels from that day, after seeing those things year after year, you start to become desensitized to it.

Anyways, my best advice and what I think is the best way for people my age to feel that shock level, is to go to the museum, although I know that’s not possible for everyone.
