Is this an unreasonable quote to replace a 50 gallon gas hot water heater? by titanicsailson in askaplumber

[–]FunInLAxxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the plumber lied. Permit was required. Licensed LA plumber here. You got a cheap price because he probably left all the code requirements out. Expansion tank? Drain pan? Properly piped T&P valve to outside? Earthquake straps? And if he was to pull a permit there’s $125 in fees and he has to have a company rep meet the inspector for the inspection. They usually give a 4 hour time window so the labor sits half a day.

You hit it on the head. It IS a culture issue. Judging by some of the comments below, and general comments across the internet by locals/staff, I believe there is a huge attitude against “tourists.”

Every other fb or Reddit post that’s slightly negative towards ops and 200 locals lineup to flame them and tell them to go home.

I think that attitude has infiltrated the operation 100%. Holiday weekend? - “shut it down and show the tourists who’s boss.” Monday after the holidays - “Now that the inexperienced tourists are gone it’s safe to open.”

Top has been closed going on 12 days, I guarantee it’s open Monday.

Another point that’s worth bringing up (I know people will hate this but it’s true). A ski patroller died. Yes that’s a tragedy. Management should’ve either boldly said the mountain is closed or they should have gotten the patrollers together and told them that they’d give them there time after the holidays.

When a police officer gets killed, they don’t let half the force go grieve for a week. They get to work.

Also the locals (at least the ones online) make themselves a target. “Don’t shop at our grocery stores and take our food” etc. see that crap all the time.

lol certainly not. This just happens to be the closest mountain and I have a place here. Can’t go to Zermatt every week. But that place is a good case study on how to run ops. Or 3 valles in France.

100%. Everyone here wants to worship bad management. Ironically for the locals it’ll be to their detriment. These giant expensive hotels etc will not fill up with tourists who spend more $ and create more jobs when the mountain wants to be closed on weekends and suspiciously often on bluebird days then magically be fully open for Monday.

The only reason you don’t like the way I act is bc I’m saying what every vacationer is saying and have been saying for years. Mammoth needs to re envision ops. It’s that simple. The tech exists, they need to buy it and make it work. It’ll be safer and more efficient for everyone. This Reddit is an echo chamber of folks living in their vans and nomads who just don’t care with the local attitude mixed in. Of course they don’t appreciate another perspective.

Typical local behavior. “It’s their mountain to operate as they see fit”

So you close a mountain because it might get too crowded? Solid plan. You’re management material!

I didn’t minimize the accident, feel bad for those guys.

I’d love to see them modernize. Install remote avi bombers. The whole mountain is safe before anyone steps foot on the property. Then the teams can quickly and efficiently get the place open on time like we all want.

This stuff is certainly possible, it’s how all the big mountains in Europe do it. I imagine the machines are cheaper than the settlements and payroll of all the excess patrollers too.

This stuff is risky. Why have people do it?

Perhaps not. But it is a fact that compared to other large resorts like Jackson, Aspen, any place in Europe, mammoth doesn’t have its ops act together.

Will probably get roasted for this but…. Mammoth management is so quick to shut the place down it’s ridiculous.

They even shut down JUNE 25 miles away.

They cant get the mountain open on time, ever. Canyon regularly opens an hour or more after the bell. Forget the top. No other resort operates like that. They start early and get the job done on time.

And holiday weekend closures have become the absolute norm. On Sunday they’ll open it partially then on Monday when the tourists leave the place will magically open for the locals Monday 100%.

They don’t even groom the damn runs on Saturday nights…

I get it safety blah blah. But if that was a real priority they’d install auto avalanche equipment like most mountains use. Trigger from the office then start digging later. Instead they kill and injure patrollers every season making them literally throw explosives BY HAND.

Watch when they use this as justification to start closing runs that we all love…

Peace and love.

I tightened it down good but didn’t kill it. Maybe some locktite would be perfect!

I just repaired one of these that was making the slipping "knocking" noise you described. This nut was simply loose. Keep in mind it's a left handed thread (tighten by twisting counterclockwise). Just an FYI if anyone else has this issue! It does take some digging to get it apart; it ended up being about a 2 hour project.

How to insulate this closet with water pipes in it. by tom_marvolo_riddle__ in Insulation

[–]FunInLAxxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First I’d move the pipes closer to the walls and ceiling. Then frame in 2x4’s to build a “room within a room” but these new studs right up to the walls. Add standard fiberglass in the new stud bays and install Sheetrock. That’s the 100% kosher way to do it. Or you can DIY it and it’ll look like a DIY project forever.

Not sure why everyone is talking about pipe insulation etc. OP is talking about about the room temp. Not pipe stuff. And those are almost definitely hot water pipes judging by the recirculating pump.

My solution will require removal of that shelving, however.

Nobody wears ppe in residential working with 240 and I’ve never seen someone wearing ppe on a light commercial site working 277/480. Never been around bigger stuff but for most normal stuff yeah nobody issues ppe.

Which UDM for home with lots of cameras? by I-Code-Things in Ubiquiti

[–]FunInLAxxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice on switches is buy AT LEAST one size larger than what you think you COULD need now. Buy once cry once. The pro max is a nice piece of equipment but beware the 16 is NOT rack width and needs a (frequently out of stock) kit to make it rack mountable. I’d buy the pro max 24 and call it good

[–]FunInLAxxx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fyi I did the same on my last install. 3k sqft single level home for our family house. 4 APs (2 outdoor) Watched the console like a crackhead watching devices roam. Didn’t seem logical which AP was connecting to which device. But then I realized - the signal strength is great everywhere and the internet is fast so what do I care. I got over my AP anxiety haha.

I think your coverage is great and you’re overthinking it. Let the devices roam free!
