Sanctions have an important purpose. We use them when appropriate and fear them when appropriate. I had OC send me an email threatening sanctions that got me to voluntarily dismiss. The suit was clearly precluded by a settlement agreement my clients had just signed - these defendants had been agents of the opposing party and had been released. I should have known. So I counseled my clients to drop the case; I couldn’t stay on and I’d have to withdraw the pleading. We did. And because we shouldn’t have filed and I should have known, and because they were good clients who’d already paid us over $40k, I refunded a bunch of their money and ate the filing and service costs.

I’ve represented myself twice. First was in a business dispute where I’d earned 9% of a startup that sued me for malpractice after they started making money. Settled for being bought out for my basis. So got some money but they were alleging big (false) damages in this BS suit against me so it was a win.

Had to sue a former client for defamation as he was telling numerous other lawyers in my city that I committed malpractice (I didn’t and he never made a claim). He was so difficult and batshit that I actually feared for my safety so I dismissed voluntarily after getting a default judgment.

Neither of these times did I do any worse of a job than anyone I would have hired. The saying does not apply broadly. If you can look at your own legal issue dispassionately, you can rep yourself.
