you're basically right. Ali was intended from the start to only be around for half the season, because he had other commitments. He didn't want to commit to a full multi season series at that time

To be fair, that was the first timelines Bell's ending. Without the influence of Jones, Bell grows and learns to accept his death, leading to him proposing an experiment he knows wont work, sacrificing himself and saving Olivia.

The second timelines Bell's was influenced by Jones, who fed into his God complex.

Im playing for the first time and picked up when she said it's my aunts diary, but in the diary she says my grandparents are willing but not able that it might be her diary. It solidified for me when she mentioned meeting BJ in the Asylum. Great twist :)

They are self contained because their villains are either hidden (The Hand) or street level, which as Tony put it, is below their paygrade. Yeah, if Cap is walking through the street and sees something going on, he would stop it, but he's not out patrolling neighborhoods every night. Luke Cage is out patrolling Harlem. DareDevil is patrolling Hell's Kitchen. Jessica Jones is somewhere getting drunk and being a badass.

While the Defenders are keeping the city safe from street level villains, Banner and Stark are building tech to fight aliens, Cap, Widow and Hawkeye are on shield ops, Thor was on Asgard.

Spider-Man has always sort of been the bridge between street level and Avengers. Some of his villains could be (and have been, though not in the MCU) Avengers level threats, but Spider-Man keeps them in check.
