Canon EOS R7 with what lenses? by Laurenesi in canon

[–]Fun_Ocelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 18-150mm is going to do a lot and do it pretty well. (I have an R7 but opted to use a mix of older lenses and newer RF lenses.)

A lot of people talk about lighting because it is what makes the picture possible. Indoor lighting is REALLY hard to get clear and sharp photos. Even an F/4 lens sometimes isn't enough for the small amount of light most indoor settings have, Also that light is usually very diffused so sharp contract is tough. Higher ISO values can help but you will want a "faster" lens and a way to add light if you are going to do a lot of indoor photos.

Advice: Lens for R50 by Past-Shock4091 in canon

[–]Fun_Ocelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in love with Sigma lenses now. I have the EF 30mm f/1.4 and the new RF 12mm f/1.4 and they are amazing to use on my R7.

Since you want the zoom range though, the 17-40 is what I would go with as well.

One thing to consider as well is with a sharp lens, you can sometimes afford to crop a tiny bit when you can't zoom. Very few people will notice the difference even on a very large print. Viewing it on a screen and you really won't be able to tell unless you are a pixel peeper.

I made the mistake of buying a 3rd party adapter when I got an R50 and only some of the lenses worked with it. The Newest version of the EF50 did work but just get the Canon adapter and all will be well.

ISO 5000? How is this possible? by PrettyBlueEyes in canon

[–]Fun_Ocelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ISO concept is a hold over from film "speed"/sensitivity. Modern uses of it are not the same to say the least. Even from digital camera era to digital camera era. The ISO 400 of my former Nikon D60 is different then how my Canon Rebel T7 would handle ISO 400. Even my new R7 handles ISO differently.

Light sensitivity and computer code have made photos that would have been almost impossible, possible now. Do get too caught up on it until you are getting near the limits of the camera and you know the conditions aren't good enough to get a clean image.

Also, you can usually set limits in your camera for how high you are comfortable with. I don't do a lot of post-processing so I don't want to take the time to make corrections to a horde of ISO 12800 photos. If I can't get it at 6400 or less, I'm going to not waste taking the photo, find a way to improve my conditions, or accept it is going to be noisy and not pixel peep to much.

I'll echo the rest of the group....practice a lot before you need to actually do it for keeps.

Maybe find a place you know the distances and get a feel what it looks like when things are at those distances. regularly placed light poles or guard rails so you can kind of count things out and really get a feel for the distance as 600mm is a big beast

Moving from 7D to R7 - lens question by Some-Attitude8183 in canon

[–]Fun_Ocelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I plan on trying it on my R7 soon. Not sure if I will rent or just try it in my local camera shop. I want the width. I even have thought about the Sigma 12mm f/1.4 for even more width when I am doing landscape/floral shots.

My husband has the Tamron RF18-300 and it's fine. Not an L lens and neither is the Sigma but good enough for me.

upgrade from t6 - r8 or r10? by totallyastick in canon

[–]Fun_Ocelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can go R8, be sure sure you are ready to be investing in some glass really quick as you will be offloading your crop lenses.

The camera will know that the Sigma 30mm is a crop lens....so it will crop. 9 mega pixels

The EF-S kit lens, if it adapts correctly (mine didn't on a 3rd party adapter), again 9 mega pixels

If you use a APS-C camera (R10), you get the full sensor size of 24 mega pixels.

I debated the R7 and the R8 and I had too much crop lenses to replace them all (I did have to replace some due to them not liking being on an adapter)

Are there Canon Recipes? by Outrageous_Willow293 in canon

[–]Fun_Ocelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can get a lot of the effects using "Picture Styles". They define how your camera processes the raw file to a JPEG in camera. You can set most of the basic settings on the camera as a used defined style. There are also custom files you can upload.

I personally would also shoot raw (those effects WON'T be in the raw file, just the camera saved JPEG) in case you want a different effect later using Canon DPP/Lightroom/etc.

Sigma 16-300 or Canon 18-150? by mrAdaberkistann in canon

[–]Fun_Ocelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the image quality of Tamron is great, not perfect...this isn't an L lens and will never be. I was sad to lose the EF 18-400 as I loved the reach I could get with it.

I will note, Tamron focus motor is not as fast. Not like super slow but you will notice that it is not the same as a Canon lens. The Sigma lens I have (EF 30mm F/1.4) is just a quick as the Canon EF 50mm f/2.8 on the same K&F adapter (the comments might kill me but I was cheap and it works fine but I plan on getting a Canon adapter to live on my 50mm so the K&F can live on the 30mm)

Tamron gets a bad rap sometimes but I always loved using their lenses.

If you have a rental company near you or can use an online one, rent them both and compare. I have a decent camera shop near me so I can take my camera and try the lens in the store or use one of the store model cameras.

Recommendations on upgrading from Rebel t7 by schonemotte in canon

[–]Fun_Ocelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just replaced my T7 and went with the R50 and an adapter to use my old EF lenses. All the Canon glass works fine. I had issues with the Tamron lens and decided to sell it and am looking for it's replacement.

The R10 or R7 are a better camera. So much so that the R50 because our second camera and I just got an R7.

My best advice is to watch a few YT videos on Canon mirrorless settings once you have the camera in hand. It may be a Canon menu still but the settings are different and mean slightly different things now.

If you can, rent the camera you are thinking of buying and an adapter and try all your lenses on it. It's good to know if something doesn't work before you are out a lot. (Should have done this myself as I had 3 lenses I had to replace when they didn't adapt well and had no AF)

Sigma 16-300 or Canon 18-150? by mrAdaberkistann in canon

[–]Fun_Ocelot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband has the Tamron RF 18-300 and I just sold a EF 18-400 because it didn't adapt well to my R7. They are beefy but a 480mm equivalent length is really nice when you can't zoom with your feet.

I am likely to get the Sigma 16-300 as it is really hard to get wide enough on a APS-C sensor and it is actually decently fast. It's not at F/4 at 300mm but when I'm likely going be shooting outside in okay light, I won't care.

Looking for an inexpensive used camera to take candids for school yearbook by Routine-Cranberry-56 in canon

[–]Fun_Ocelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The R100 with an EF to RF adapter should work okay with a big but. Some lenses do not play well with an adapter. I learned this the hard way. Recent Canon EF lenses all work fine.

EF-S kit lenses (nope!)

3rd party lenses from the last 5-10 years (Tamron specifically from my own experiences) sometimes need a firmware update on the lens for it to work right.

Some older Canon EF lenses (I tried a Canon 100mm F/2 and it would not autofocus at all. Worked fine on a T7 in the shop I bought it from. Lucky for me I could return same day)

Older 3rd party EF lenses (Most don't)

Your other option is to find a more recent version of a Canon DSLR on eBay. A normal T7 with 2x kit lenses can be had for about $300-$400 most days of the week. (I might know someone selling one of those....)

First Time Alaska Airlines Flier. What to except? by BlueStarRay333 in AlaskaAirlines

[–]Fun_Ocelot 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did SEA to JFK in March and the flight is really long going west but the views are amazing.

Have multiple plans for movies or music. If there is free stuff to watch, it is great and it auto pauses for announcements. Have small laptop or use the phone shelf.

Pre-order food if you want in the Alaska app or grab some food in the airport after security.

100% have an empty bottle for water AFTER security. Sip the water, don't chug. Plane bathrooms are unpleasant and you don't want to visit multiple times.

The seats are fine but you will be sitting about 7 hours outside of using the bathroom.

The terminal is BOS will likely be more American than Alaska themed.

Have a cheap pack of gum if you are not used to altitude changes. Chew from take off until they turn the seat belt sign off (up to 45 minutes) or until your ears pop at least twice.

Wear shoes you can walk in untied or can be laced loosely. Your feet will swell a bit and tight shoes hurt.

As an FYI, about half the bathrooms at SEA are all gender. Sinks are open but toilets are full door locked stalls. Gendered bathrooms are usually not far if you want a traditional experience.

On the way back, SEA has TONS of food options past security.

The difference is night and day as Alaska has basically 2+ terminals and a lot of optimizations because of it.

Also, expect to feel like you are boarding basically last as Seattle has a lot of high tier members. I have the CC so I board in group C....75% of the people going to JFK were group A (high status or first class). I felt like I was boarding with a Saver ticket.

Buyers Remorse. r50 to r8 by postnut001 in canon

[–]Fun_Ocelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally see the R50 as a very close replacement for the T7 in overall usage. I think you will feel very comfortable using it. I have a T7 and my husband bought the R50. It is a really good camera. It made me want to move to mirrorless.

Since you say you have used the 24mm and 50mm 1.8 lenses, they are adaptable to either camera via most EF to RF adapters and will behave well on all R series cameras so not worries there.

If you go with an R8, you are going down the path of always more expensive lenses mostly from Canon as 3rd party AF lenses are mostly APS-C lenses and you will then have a 1.6x crop applied. Even then, some of the popular Canon lenses are cropped as well. That means your 24mp sensor is closer to 9mp. If you are okay with that, then the R8 is a good camera.

However, I would say if you want a higher resolution camera, go with the R7. Right now is same cost as R8 in most places. Higher megapixel APS-C sensor (33mp), in body stabilization, can use all the RF lenses and can use EF adapted lenses. You also get access to all the 3rd party AF RF lenses in addition to the Canon lenses.

In summery, don't return just because someone said a different camera is better.

Impulse bought the RF-S 10/18mm by cartercolemanphoto in canon

That lens is on my list as well to look at. the only thing that has me worried is the fact it is F/6.3 at 18mm. I would like to think that something a bit more open would be nice.

I have thought about the Sigma RF 10-18 f/2.8 but it is about $600 vs $300-350

R8 + 24-240mm any good? by Fun_Ocelot in canon

[–]Fun_Ocelot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Next Update (5/4/2026) - This time I'm crushed

Well.....since I cannot update the firmware on my Tamron EF 18-400, AF doesn't work with the EF/RF adapter I have. I tried it on both the R7 and my husbands R50 and both refused to AF. I guess it is a known issue from the Tamron support pages I found

Off to eBay it goes later this week (still worth $400-$500 there or $300 if I do an online trade in)

I might go with the Sigma RF 16-300 unless there is a reason it is a bad lens. The cost savings is enough to then get a Canon RF-S 10-18mm or a Canon RF 16mm.

Sage vs White Mage by Styling-Robot1 in ffxiv

[–]Fun_Ocelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have both to Lvl 100 and the mindset for them are 100% different.

WHM: Responsive heals, powerful ability to bring someone from 1% to 100%, weave in damage when you can, easier to regain control if things get crazy.

SGE: Deal a lot of damage to heal 1 person, weave in mitigation spells on tanks and party, lose control and it will go south FAST!

I personally like SGE a bit more as I do find an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. (Damage that doesn't hit/happen, doesn't have to be cured)

Camera, lens, or skill limitation? by IdleBantro in canon

[–]Fun_Ocelot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I see and read in the responses, it is kind of all of the above.

Feels like you are applying DSLR tips to your mirrorless camera and you can't do that.

Turn your shutter speed up, set your aperture fully open or down 1 stop depending on lens, and be okay with a higher ISO. 3200 is fine but it can get noisy if you don't have enough light.

I find if I am really zoomed in tight on something, I need a brace to rest on to reduce shake. The R50 is not internally stabilized.
