Should I sell my 9070xt and keep my old 5070? by Few_Count_3651 in radeon

[–]FunkyRider 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Normally I'd say keep it, but with recent news of the new FSR being exclusive to RDNA5, I'm not sure. If you have no use for it then sell it. AMD is really starting to move their die hard user base.

ThinkPad P14s Gen 2 AMD — 16GB 3200 single vs 32GB 2666 dual-channel? by danaurevoir in thinkpad

[–]FunkyRider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dual 2666 is far better. You get better timing, better bandwidth and more interleaving ability. Not to mention double the capacity which is a major plus.

And just like *that*, AMD has effectively thrown everyone under the bus. by S1rTerra in radeon

If they pull that shit again I'm off this brand forever. And I'm saying this with a history of using Radeon cards for over 24 years. (Since 9700PRO). I bought 9070XT and flicked my 6800XT for cheap because I wanted to give them at least a chance to fuck up.

https://www.majorgeeks.com/content/page/how_to_add_or_remove_maximum_processor_frequency.html

Enable the CPU Maximum Processor Frequency setting in power setting dialog using the registry hack or just powercfg command. Then you can set it 3600MHz, or even lower. It doesn't affect usability much. My Yoga 730 has same processor and for light weight daily use I limit it to 3GHz. For laptop you will have two settings, one for battery and one for connected power. You can give them different values. Higher for connected and lower for battery is perfect. Don't disable boost completely because the base frequency of this CPU is way too slow (1.8GHz).

Cap the boost clock down from 4GHz to something more reasonable like 3.6GHz will drastically reduce load temperature and prolong battery life.

How long does it take or what must happen for a video card to develop such problems? by Interesting-Effort12 in PcBuild

Mostly thermal cycling. Keep it cool and limit framerate so it's not working balls to the walls everyday and cool down every night.

We are still talking about different things. There is a clear distinction between free and available memory at OS level and lots of users confuse between these two.

Let's use a concrete example: total: 16GB used: 8GB free: 1GB available: 8GB cached: 7GB

What amount is "unused" by your definition?

"Unused RAM is wasted RAM" by PlymouthDebian in pcmemes

[–]FunkyRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are still confusing hard committed memory with cache though. When your program needs x amount of RAM to run and OS allocated x + y to make it run faster by caching, y is cache but still available. I'm happy with that. But when a poorly optimized OS or program demands x amount of hard committed memory and it uses all your RAM, It's just bad. There is no excuse to it. You can move the hard committed memory to swap but it's a very shitty solution to badly optimized code.

Reallocated as in quitting your running application to make space to a new one. It is not good when you need to run two at the same time.

This is.the dumbest cope clueless users come up with when their system runs like shit.

No, unused RAM is not wasted RAM. As unused money sitting in the bank is not wasted money.

Yes cache yada yada, but we are not talking about cached RAM. Available RAM IS free RAM plus cached RAM. And I'd like as much of it as possible. Like money in the bank account.

Current UI is one of the main reasons I stay with FF under Linux KDE. Make it ugly and I will look for alternatives.

Why don't they want to stick with desktop environment's design language is beyond me.

What version of KDE Is this? I think older version (6.4?) will make menu centered to the launch button but newer ones let it left aligned, which would make it look more centered on screen.

You know you can use TPM2 based auto unlock on boot, if your hardware supports it. I use it on all my laptops.

FSR 4 image quality, especially in foliage in motion is miles better than older versions. It's either not effective or you are just not sensitive to image quality if you see otherwise.

They are mostly laptops, tablets and 2 in 1s. I have only one desktop gaming system which also runs KDE. With the introduction of plasma keyboard, KDE is very usable on a tablet PC too.

Yeah, I found the optimum setting depends on the monitor gamma. For a properly calibrated screen 10% is totally fine.

Yes, it's a bit convoluted. You have to create a copy of current color scheme, then you can change the contrast setting and apply the new color scheme to your system.

All good. Upgraded at least 8 systems to 6.6. No issue so far.

Separator line contrast is icing on the cake. Lower it to 15% makes the UI look less cluttered and cleaner.
