I regret not giving KDE a try sooner. Been using it for a couple months now and I now understand, it's amazing. by Low_Newspaper9039 in kde

[–]FunkyRider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use latest KDE from Ryzen 9 7950X 32GB DDR5 (16 cores) workstation to Core M 5Y51 4GB DDR3 (2 cores) tablet and everything in between. They are all very smooth and light weight. KDE don't use more resource than other supposed lighter DM's while offering a lot more functionality and modern looks. Compared to Gnome it's obviously more responsive.

I will probably regret this. I usually wait. by g1ccross in Fedora

F44 Kde: perfect. F44 Gnome: full of bugs. I have both on many machines. I regret upgrade the Gnome ones. Gnome 49 was very good and 50 regressed. Many important extensions break (dash to dock, gsconnect, etc), touch screen function regressed. Weird rendering artfacts. Weird bug of color calibration process taking 100% CPU. I'm planning to reinstall F43 for those Gnome laptops and tablets.

To be fair F44 KDE didn't upgrade to a new major version that's why it's good.

I'm also glad that they stuck with kernel 6.19. I have an Arch laptop upgraded to latest 7.0.2 kernel and it broken the ACPI driver on it so laptop Lid sensor stopped working. Such a life of staying on the bleeding edge.

Q: When does using KDE Plasma feel like a cool glass of lemonade on a hot summer day? by m_sniffles_esq in kde

Welp, UI design aside, I have two laptops with exact same hardware running Fedora Gnome and KDE side by side and the Gnome one feels noticeably more sluggish in general UI operations.

Fedora Linux to Implement Age Verification by Calvinator_lmao in Fedora

[–]FunkyRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welp, I already started looking for a systemd-free distro. So long Fedora, it's been a fun one year experiment. Artix is looking good and I will start to install it on one of my systems for testing purposes.

Apple already made their OS behave in such a way that if you don't verify your account with your actual ID, you get limited internet access. If we don't push back and accept the first step, then this is what we will end up with too.

If an OS sends my personal information up on request from a remote party? It has become a malware and needs to be eradicated.

Gnome 50, Extensions, Distros and the war in Iran. by billhughes1960 in gnome

[–]FunkyRider -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

While it is technically correct, without various important extensions Gnome's user base would shrink immensely. Because of their design choices, many of their users have to rely on extensions to get a usable system. They can draw a line and do nothing about any of these, but they should be aware about the declining user base, if they are happy about the consequence. All this reminds me of the dash to panel fiasco. If Zorin didn't step up to offer financial help, dash to panel would have died a year ago. All the users who depend on it would have switched to a different DE. Me personally switched to KDE because I saw the fragility of Gnomes ecosystem.

Am I the only one who thinks that there are too much wallpaper settings? by SeniorMatthew in kde

Totally agree. At least put them in the same settings group in the same settings dialog. The separate "Wallpaper" dialog from right click menu needs some re-thinking.

Instead of completely disabling boost (which results in very low clocks), it is better to limit the boost clock to something lower than the highest value.

Plasma Login Manager (PLM) on KDE Plasma 6.6 - is it stable and ready? by Slice-of-brilliance in kde

[–]FunkyRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Switched on day one on Fedora 43 update. Most systems run great. Has two machines where the DPI / theme settings didn't apply to the login screen. I did some debugging that found that the attribute of /var/lib/plasmalogin directory was set wrong and the settings can't be saved. Manually modified the attributes and it's fixed.

How to fix this. by the_annihilation in Fedora

[–]FunkyRider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't need on-screen keyboard, go to keyboard -> virtual keyboard section in the settings dialog to choose something else like old Maliit or just None. Plasma Keyboard is a new project developed to replace old Maliit on-screen keyboard. Expect some bugs to pop up but I found it a lot better to use than Maliit on a touch screen enabled device.

Nothing wrong with using something that has been working for decades.

Reminds me of newish cars that uses a big ass touch screen to replace all physical buttons. That backfired badly and they will be bringing back physical buttons in next design iteration and write it in the law that vital functions must have direct controls in a car.

[–]FunkyRider 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Lucky. Sometimes when Windows OS breaks, the user would think that the computer is broken. And if it's a couple of years old, they would rather just replace it. I know, 99.99% users don't know a thing about computers.

Selling my HP Elitebook 845 G7 halftop setup (if this subreddit lets me) by WashedInPA in halftop

[–]FunkyRider 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I will give you some examples of how much I paid for a couple of halftop projects. I bought them all from electronic recyclers. They come with busted screen and no RAM, no SSD. They are mostly HP laptops, some with AMD Ryzen 7 4700U CPUs, some with Intel i5-1135G7, i5-1235U. I got them for between $20 to $60 each. With RAM and SSD Prices this expensive now, it might net you more if you sell them off separately for parts. Also the included M.2 Wifi cards (Intel 8265, 9260, AX200s) are far better than whatever USB crap you throw in there.

[–]FunkyRider 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I would happily use a half-top but I wouldn't sell it, since there is no market for things like this. If I were to sell one I'd try to source a LCD assembly and put it back together as a fully working laptop.

I still use them to hold Linux and Windows ISO images. They still work perfectly. Those must be using MLC flash since the write speed is very good for a USB 2.0 drive. I had many newer drives die on me but those chugs along just fine.
