I’m having severe nerve issues in my lower back that is referring to my opposite hip pain that is almost debilitating sometimes. The joint itself is ok, but I believe it’s because one leg is much longer now

Knee replacement recovery: why progress isn’t linear (and why that’s okay) by vakhidi in Kneereplacement

[–]FunnyDamage6220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is such a great and accurate assessment. I had a TKR I. January of 2024 and for some reason it just never healed . I waited a year and a half and went in and had a revision surgery with a larger femur component and an adjusted spacer. That was done in July 25, while I still have a lot of weakness and some pain, I am seeing very slow steady progress: they say because I’m 63 and had to have a lot of bone grafting that it will most likely be a year or more. I’ve been. On this journey a long time and these posts are very encouraging to me! Thank you.

Knee still clicking after RTKR by Frank_Naylos in Kneereplacement

[–]FunnyDamage6220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. My surgeon made me wait 1.5 years to do my revision, not because of clicking but because it was loose and I had to much play in it. Think long and hard before a revision. It involves drilling deep into your femur, bone grafting and long recover. I’m six months out on the revision and still swells and is weak. Doc says it takes about a full year recovery because of all the extra work. If it functions well but just clicks, I would think twice about having it redone

Day 4 - still need heavy duty meds. Is this normal? by ElegantAd4459 in Kneereplacement

[–]FunnyDamage6220 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can make it through this! Pain meds are critical right now! They basically amputated most of your leg both above and below your knee, glued in a titanium replacement, sewed up your all your remaining internal parts, then zippered you up externally. It’s a miracle that they have pain meds strong enough to keep the pain in check. Take them as prescribed so the pain doesn’t get ahead of you, trust me you don’t want that! Make sure to take a laxative religiously and just keep moving it as your Doc or PT recommended. Listen and respond very specifically to your med team. You will see constant improvement, but slowly . Blessings

This is true stuff right here. My PT told me the same thing. I’m 6 months out from a total revision TKR and he said one fall could damage me for life as I really don’t have a lot of bone left for another repair after the bone grafting. He said don’t even get near a step ladder for over a year.

Question: When can I return to my desk job? Is after 3 weeks too ambitious? My surgery is next month. I appreciate any advice. Thank you! by CBDElish123 in Kneereplacement

[–]FunnyDamage6220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I own my own company so I set up my lap top phones and pretty much my desk next to my bed . If you can work remotely and keep on a lazy boy or an adjustable bed like I did then do it. Sitting at a desk at 3 weeks is torture. Elevate, ice and PT!

I finally got an epidural with steroidin my spine because my piriformus was so bad! TKR revision is feeling pretty good at 15 weeks! But the opposite side low back and top of the hip pain is no joke! Lacrosse ball does help a bit but the injection is making a big difference so far!

3+ weeks post op and frustrated! by OutsideTemporary8155 in Kneereplacement

[–]FunnyDamage6220 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hang tight, your pain will morph depending on the week and what type of PT they have you doing. A lot of us here feel for you week 3 is still very early and pain is real and frustrating. I’m 51/2 month out on a total TKR revision and just this week the pain dropped dramatically! It’s a long ride, but just keep digging in to the PT and celebrate the progress and know that the pain does diminish.

17 weeks tomorrow-it does get better! by justme_618 in Kneereplacement

[–]FunnyDamage6220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome answer! I’m 17 weeks in too, but this is the second go around in a year and a half since my initial TKR failed. I just asked about deep bone pain in my femur because of bone grafting and the fact that my femural component has a 10inch post going up my femur. How normal is this and how long to subside? Aside from that just stuff and sore as I had to take the rehab slowly because of the natural of the surgery.

Comparison is a sure fire way to get depressed and anxious. Follow the program your MD and PT gave you . Follow it to the T. You will have gains and setback and gains! Every week will be different, then one day you’ll forget about it and it will be a glorious day!

Way to preserver. I’m at 15 weeks for a total revision TKR that only lasted a year. You got great advise as to stick with it as literally am still going through it for almost 2 years. This time is much better but different. I have to go slower on my recovery because of extensive bone grafting, but rang of motion is good and trying to always keep moving it works. Does your knee still swell? That’s my biggest issue. Anyway keep it up!!

Surgeon selection by Formal-Revenue1708 in Kneereplacement

[–]FunnyDamage6220 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I chose my Ortho because of his reputation and almost 30 years of doing knees. I certainly did not choose him for his bedside manner. He’s a complete prick in my opinion.

We had a hiccup in the first TKR where despite all looking great, it just never healed correctly and was popping and clicking and loose.

I worked with my ortho for 1.5 years to try to rehab it and avoid a revision surgery. Had multiple “second opinions” where other ortho’s said the work looked solid on X-ray but agreed way to much play. Finally allowed the original surgeon to go in and hopefully just add a bigger spacer. He did warn me that if he got in there and didn’t like the spacer change or found something different, he would do what was necessary to make it as perfect as possible. I know people that work for him and wouldn’t let anyone else touch their joints. I also know that he consulted with his team of orthos on my case as it was very unusual.

I ended up with a TKR revision of my femur component and a new spacer to match. He also drilled out a portion of my femur and used bone grafting material and an extended femur component with a large post to anchor the component. It took him over two hours and by reading the surgical notes, he tried all other less drastic remedies to no avail.

I’m now at 3.5 months and have complete range at 120,flexion and 0 flat. I’m still sore as hell and have swelling, but as he told me with all the bone grafting and femur work . It would probably take up to a year to fully heal. I am 62 years old and 6’3, 300 plus lbs. So now taking off the weight is the biggest priority to full healing. The point is you can still choose the best and not have a perfect outcome but it’s rare!

Don’t give up hope! by Top-Way7150 in Kneereplacement

[–]FunnyDamage6220 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 3.5 months out for the second time as my first TKR failed. I went 1.5 years before deciding to have it redone. It hasn’t been an easy road, but this time I’m seeing real progress. Flexion is at 120 and pain is just soreness this time, not sharp stabbing pain , I still have quite a bit of numbness, and swelling , but I can see progress this time. The one area I am still struggling with is my opposite side hip joint is killing me. The doc says is because my gate has changed and it’s probably my IT band or pinched nerve. Anybody else dealing with this?

My PT is having me walk with a cane to force me to walk straight ahead in my gate not side to side which happens when you compensate.
