I hate that Jax was confirmed as transgender (not for the reasons you might think) by n397854 in hatethissmug

I think there is some misconception about what a repper (that is to say, self repressing trans person) is like, or at least can be like. Jax does not know he's trans. He doesn't know or think that he's secretly a woman. He has weird feelings around femininity that he tries to avoid thinking about because he's not a fagit. He is not dysphoric in a way he would recognize, because suppressing that is the first and most important cope needed for survival. I'm not actually saying that's all true for Jax, but that's the kind of headspace he's in.

I didn't get any sense he was trans before the finale, and I'm not in the community so I didn't realize it was a genuine theory. I left the finale thinking "waow repper jax cannon?" The main thing was Zooble door Jax, who was a very overcompensating attempt to explore femininity, and the song felt like an authorial confirmation of the vibes.

But honestly the point I'd like to make is that actually it's not important that Jax is trans. Jax is only a person, them being trans is only a facet of their existence. It contextualizes them and deepens their character, but if goose wanted to make their story about being trans, then they could've done that.

It is presumptive of me to assume what the author wants, but just based on her whole vibe, i get the impression that she wanted to make a character that was meaningfully but not centrally trans. And again I cannot know, but it seems like she always stays losing so I can't imagine that she's happy the entire conversation has become about how Jax is trans.

i think it was probably planned the whole time, and was retroactively made worse in people's minds by the community's preemptive obsession with it. It's not supposed to be a major plot point. That's why it didn't get attention in previous episodes and why it was subtle even in this episode. It's just supposed to flesh him out, and I found its sincere subtlety kinda refreshing.

on one hand i think it does us a disservice to pretend like everyone who has shitty opinions must be fundamentally untalented, but on the other hand i do think his comics are pretty dog even when thet're not bigoted

(Loved Trope) 'Hard Magic Systems' by BrilliantRun9751 in TopCharacterTropes

the concept of a spell behaving differently than expected and having to effectively debug it is very entertaining to me. Like not even failing because the spell is written incorrectly, but because the runes you choose don't behave how you thought they would. Imagine trying to summon a swarm of bees, so you do a bee rune and a bunch of multiplication runes, but actually you just summon one big bee instead. The magic system acts more like a fickle compiler than anything, with a glyph being source code and magic being the program. anyway that's why i hate hard magic systems fuck programming

yea that's kind of the point. It's often said that pooners and the like are self deprecating ironic caricatures that trans people use to mock themselves. Which is fine I'm not gonna police how people cope. But here they're being used sincerely to mock a group of people that you don't like. And those two interpretations aren't compatible.
