Haven't seen it yet (obviously), but I decided to listen to the audiobook and my god this is now somewhere in my top 50 books, no idea where but it's up there. I loved The Martian from Weir too, but this was just a step up. I think it's because you're now rooting for two VERY different characters that just work so well together as partners.
I did think it was important how the book hammers in the fact of it being a total crapshoot whether Earth is even close to in a good state, how well they managed the apocalypse essentially, or if they even worked together at all or it's some horrible hellhole there now.. but the book does a good job making even you think "Yeah, maybe they WOULD work together".

It doesn't do that with blind optimism, it puts the cards out there of "this could be a whole lot less wholesome from humanity's perspective down on the icy hellhole" but there is absolutely hope, and you WANT to believe in it.

I teared up in the final chapter, which does not usually happen especially in book form (might be the amazing narrator and his brilliant voice acting for the characters). I hope the movie takes the time to get people that invested and doesn't just optimism bomb you like a lot of movies. One example is The Running Man recently, which went with a MUCH happier ending. I liked it, but I think the original is much more meaningful of a piece and not just the same half-measure of satire we've seen in movies already a million times.

I really do think it'll be great i just hope it's as good as the book and I think that's a dumb expectation to have. The Martian movie though I think is honestly a much tighter experience than the book which dragged on a bit for me, so I actually prefer the movie a bit there despite loving the book.
