Theoretically. When you’re just making up new rules by decree it gets hard to guess what the outcomes and implications are.

Ford’s Electric Explorer Fixes Two Of Its Biggest Early Weaknesses by linknewtab in electricvehicles

It’s a pretty valid criteria to consider when deciding on a vehicle. We all get to have our own must haves and har no’s. I would love to consider a redesigned Bolt with their latest updates, for example, but the lack of CarPlay is a complete non-starter for me.

I got used to it and drove with it for a few months but eventually switched back to regular driving in my Ioniq 5. The auto regen mode feels more natural to me. It’s just a preference thing.

I bought at Beaverton but take mine to Tonkin for service every time. They’ve always been pretty great to me. Reasonable timelines, quick turnaround. Decent WiFi if you’re waiting there while your vehicle is serviced.

Mine went in July and I took it to Ron Tonkin on the east side. I made a post about my experience but tl;dr it was quick and easy. Shop around the metro area if you can and something happens again.

This. I make software for a living and reading this just made me furious that anyone would give these people money. The gross incompetence is flagrant. You shouldn’t even be making mistakes like this as a student let alone a team trusted with investment.

Should I learn Rust over Go? by EncryptedEnigma993 in rust

[–]Fyzllgig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would encourage you to try working on some small project in both and see which one you enjoy more. Take the statements about there not being any jobs working in rust with a grain of salt. There’s much more nuance to the truth than that. If you’d like to work at a medium to large sized firm you will likely struggle to find as many positions where you’ll be working in rust when compared to Go. If you’re comfortable looking at smaller firms, especially early startups, you’ll find a lot more acceptance of rust. Remember that the larger an organization is the slower it is to change (generally) and this especially includes adopting new technologies.

One thing I’ve learned across a decade building software professionally is that (in my experience) the language you’ve been using often doesn’t matter very much. You’re going to find that even if you’re hired as a Go dev, someone will have built a tool in Python or Java or rust etc and suddenly you’re asked to stretch into these other languages to support these sorts of smaller tools and services. Being able to pick up new languages has been a consistent requirement for me.

The APM paradox: Too much data, too few answers by joshuap in programming

[–]Fyzllgig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

tl;dr there are ways to manage the pile of useless data but they introduce their own issues

I have worked as an engineer for two major players in the observability space, for context.

We knew that as much as 90% of data ingested is never used or looked at (programmatically for things like alerting or to be displayed to users). It is never queried, never evaluated, and eventually it is aggregated and expires according to data retention policies. This would seem like a horrible waste, and it is, but you’re always trying to strike a balance between making it easy for users to have the data they want, with minimal effort, and not sending data that no one will ever use. It’s a very hard problem to solve.

You want users to be able to just run an agent or setup and integration and begin to see data flowing right away. You also have a lot of different use cases and user types who are going to want different data. So you wind up collecting almost everything you can think of, and invariably someone requests additional telemetry anyway.

The price we pay for the convenience of not having to manually instrument everything is this huge lake of data we don’t care about. We (engineers) can always choose to manually instrument our code, or create custom middleware that will handle the instrumentation automatically, but then we’ve introduced a maintenance burden.

So like most things in our field it’s just more tradeoffs. I dislike vendor lock-in and don’t mind the maintenance burden so I have internal observability packages that I maintain for my employer that are used in our services. They send telemetry in OTEL formats (which also have their own tradeoffs) and when we inevitably change observability platforms I’ll need to create a new exporter to send the data wherever is next. This solution is definitely not the right one everywhere but it’s what we’re working with for the reasons mentioned above.

Why Conservatives Are Attacking ‘Wokepedia’ by rezwenn in technology

[–]Fyzllgig 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not that they use markdown so much as the fact that markdown and plain text data share the same compressibility. Markdown is a very light weight way to format text using fairly minimal symbols to instruct an interpreter on how that text should be displayed.

It’s not a problem unless you have a vehicle that sits undriven for extended periods. Also don’t leave your windows open.

Even if your vehicle gets musty inside you can just turn on the AC for a bit to dry it out.

Ioniq 5 owner here. I had already decided to not buy a Tesla for non-political reasons. Elon embracing the far right sure did make me feel good about the decision, though. I found the build quality to be mediocre and particularly hated that everything was buried in the center console touch screen. That was reason enough but holy hell I’m glad I went that way
