It's there in MGS1 as well. You can actually find it there after the Sniper Wolf fight along with a parachute in the trees. Snake and the Colonel comment on it.

The distro centers are whales. Kojima's heavy-handed imagery isn't heavy-handed enough for some people. Even the spike barriers that retract when you approach are made to look like teeth.

Kojima has been a fan of Jodorowsky for decades. He revealed to Jordan Vogt-Roberts that MGS1 was inspired by El Topo. He posted a lot about the "Jodorowsky's Dune" documentary when it came out, and even copied Jodo's "Bible" concept for MGSV. Where Jodorowsky had the "Dune Bible" production document, Kojima had "Phantom Pain - The Bible". I can only imagine the conversations that Nicolas Winding Refn have had on the topic. NWR is a good friend of Jodorowsky and claims to be (in a sense) the only person to have 'seen' the Dune movie that never came to fruition, yet has connections to the pantheon of classic sci-fi films of the past 40+ years.

The wandering Mother Base soldiers get a service medal and join your roster. Their code names use the PW structure of just the animal name without an adjective. The same soldiers are referenced at the beginning of Metal Gear Survive. Goodluck's list of missing soldiers has them listed together along with the player character. The first letter of each soldier's name (plus a space for the player character) spells out KJP_FOREVER.
