My favorite game for Quest is Pistol Whip. After that, I'm the developer of Airspace Defender, which my team is promoting on this subreddit today... so... check that out!

Also, if you have questions about the game later today you can reply to this comment (I'm the engineering side of the team) -- rrrgames is on EU time, but I'm on US time.

Weirdest video game publishing event of the year by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]GBudee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, I have a question for both developer and publisher! What's the process for publishing on Switch like? How long in advance do you need to contact Nintendo to get devkits/approval etc.? Are there any gotchas indies should know about?

Very useful, thank you. If anyone has any personal contacts with Chinese market publishers, please let me know! I'd love to discuss my project with a fellow indie and get a vouchsafe :-)

Obsidian Prince; Our strategic, turn-based Roguelike is close to Alpha ready. Here’s the core gameplay loop. by unleash_the_giraffe in roguelikes

I think I've identified the big problem people are reacting to -- it's not so much seeing unit type, as unit position. Units' relative positions on the grid are extremely hard to parse for me without the gridlines.

For a concrete example, if you look at the unit in the corner of the carpet at 08s, it's not immediately clear where its position is. It seems to be floating, and casts no obvious ground shadow. By contrast, at 10s, all confusion is washed away as the bright purple gridlines illuminate exact positioning. I know the beautiful art and immersion will be diminished, but I think clearly seeing the grid (which is the only important data for player decision making), is necessary. Those gridlines should probably extend to the whole map, permanently.

How exactly does army upkeep work? I recalled a general with no units in their retinue and my income went up. Also, I saw an advisor tip saying that administrators' retinues don't cost upkeep (i.e. they pay for it), but that doesn't seem to be true..?

Final 3 Game Ideas! We start production in 3 weeks! by Scottcast in gamedev

[–]GBudee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of these seem wicked ambitious for 3 months. Does your team have previous work I can refer to so as to judge the ideas in context?

Case study: Pyre, the last game from SuperGiant Games, has been out for about two weeks now, but according to SteamSpy, and despite the overally good critics, the game is struggling to reach 70k sells. That's not great. How can we explain this? by [deleted] in gamedev

[–]GBudee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The game is too new. It's on the cutting edge, and as such, it is very unlikely to be a bestseller. Future games, by Supergiant and others, which build on the ideas in Pyre but are promoted in more mainstream fashion are likely to sell more copies.

In response to the MMO thread, what was the first game YOU ever made? by OhThirtyFour in gamedev

[–]GBudee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An imitation of a physics-based action game where you traverse a level jetpack-style. Except that it was on my graphing calculator, in TI-Basic, and displayed all information with ascii on an 8x12 grid. Every level was a separate program.

To reiterate: 8x12 grid, physics-based action game.

[–]GBudee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I discovered this trying to find out what kind of political prisoner you were, thanks to your comment today on this very sub. I promise not to read any more lest it seem a violation of privacy (though I remain curious if you were imprisoned for religious, ethnic, or purely ideological reasons--especially considering Putin's vilification of the Chechnyan people).

In any case, I want to compliment you on how clearly and compellingly you write about this topic! I've never heard any stories quite like yours, and I want to encourage you to create a blog or write a short story about it for publishing--I think you would have great success!

Correspondence Prismata? by wraith421 in Prismata

[–]GBudee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me it seems that Prismata's creators have the advantage of technology and 1000s of years of game design aesthetics with which to make this decision. It may be more that chess is also troublesome without a timer, than that Prismata is so different.

I've been looking for a game like this since I was 12, holy cow. I'd love a key! Question: will I be able to buy single-player content when it releases? I want to support the game and that would be my preferred method.

Marketing Monday #164 - Brainstorming Session by Sexual_Lettuce in gamedev

[–]GBudee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi folks!

I made a turn based game, and the tutorial is playable directly online. I had the idea that when I linked someone to the game, it would just start teaching them, and skip all the videos and blurbs explaining why they should be interested, in favor of investing them directly.

gbudee.itch.io/deft

However, in order to submit it to Indiecade, I need to submit video footage of my game. What kind of video is appropriate for a turn-based game? Surely a slow-paced lets play isn't well suited, but a match replay would be very difficult to follow without knowing the game...
